What kind of snake is this?

Pardon. Timber. And they are all over east Tennessee and SW Va.

Yea they are pretty widespread. When I was stationed at Ft Stewart me and my buddy was out fishing and there was a huge one stretched out across the tank trail. I thought it was a python at first.

I'm told that copperheads have hourglass shaped crossbands that typically stretch all the way down to their belly.

Should be able to mostly tell by looking at it from the side. At least it would rule out some similar looking snakes commonly mistaken for copperheads, like corn snakes.

My mom told me stories of snakes growing up down in the Mark Twain Forest and Ozarks of southern Missouri. She went to a church in the country and the vibrations from the guitar music would draw copperheads and rattlesnakes in near the church. They used to have snake round-ups in her little town and it took on a festival-type atmosphere.

Went shopping at Publix today and as soon as I walked in I heard a couple of ladies shrieking. A neighborly garter snake had stopped by to do some shopping and people freaked out over it.

I relocated him to some landscaping outside but he sadly isn't going to make it. Poor thing bled all over me. I was thanked for my heroism by a kindly old Yankee lady.

Walked past one coiled and sitting 3’ off the trail. Dog was with us and in the lead. Snake never made a sound nor moved. Son saw it first and he levitated 3’ minimum. Those are the type of snakes that make you run into trees as Richard Pryor would say!View attachment 382685

Those snakes are found only in the Dallas area. Fondly referred to as "NorthDallas40" snakes. Big fangs but no punch!

I think a baby water snake. Not that people usually do this but you can look at a snake's eyes and tell if it's poisonous or not. Cat slit pupils are poisonous, round pupils are not. Poisonous ones also tend to have a diamond shaped head.

Either a baby rat snake or a water snake. Hard to tell by the pic.
