What an arrogant...

Or defense is the worst in the SEC... With his players and his coaches...

Yeah, it's the fans!

Yep. We don't deserve to have a good program. We are a whiny entitled fanbase. Why, we didn't even throw a parade for the team after going 6-6 and winning the TaxSlayer Bowl last year!

You know how many teams would kill for a prestigious TaxSlayer Bowl victory?

We just need to shut our mouths and cheer like heck! We can still go 6-6 and get another nice trip to Jacksonville if Dave Hart pulls some strings.

I'm guessing this should be in blue font..:))

I watched it and was stunned by that.

Unfortunately there was no follow up question to see who he meant.
Certain media members would be my guess.

His face got redder and he was not joking.

His face got red when he was asked about meeting with the high school team where the player was killed. You really should be ashamed.

Here's the more complete quote, with context:

In context, he said nothing more or less than, "some folks are being real jerks right now, kicking us while we're down, and we're gonna remember that when brighter days come."

In context, that's not arrogant. It is a bit vengeful, but as much crap as he's being given right now, I wouldn't say it's entirely uncalled for.

You ***** and ***** and ***** at someone, don't be surprised when they snap back a little. That's all Butch was doing.

Not the big deal you and a few others are making of it.

I think you're missing the point: the way, the ONLY way, that a coach can win a football game is through his players. They are his tools, his hands. The only means he has.

So if a coach says, "Our QB needs to develop better touch in his throws," the coach isn't just insulting the QB. He's calling out the QB, and the QB position coach, and the offensive coordinator, and himself.

If a coach says, "our defense needs to tackle better," he's not just calling out the players. He's calling out the DC and all those positions coaches, and himself as well.

It seems you're missing that part of a coach's perspective.

Too many people giving up too quickly on a coach who might end up being very good. It's a pity. This virulently negative atmosphere at the first sign of hardship might be part of the reason we have trouble getting great coaches to consider the jobs when we have to go looking.

Maybe we need better fans more than we need a better coach or AD....

I'm completely okay with fighting for a bowl every year.

The players do need to perform better, but this team is tired of Butch and the 2nd half of that Arkansas game proved it. They have no faith in this staff to get them through.

So that's why they missed tackles and dropped crucial passes?

As bad as the coaching may be at times, if the execution was there the team would be 4-1 at worst. This is on everyone in that locker room

Everyone wants him to stop being a cliche machine and there you go. I personally like it. He is saying, "I'm going to get this done here, whether all you mouth breathers believe it or not. When I do, I'm going to drive by your place of residence or employment and throw you a SEC Championship t-shirt followed by the middle finger." I don't think he should have said it but he did so let's roll up the sleeves and go prove it. I hope the players feel that way too. I think Dobbs and JRM said a couple things in their portion that were a little outside of their usuall 100% coached up cliched answers. It shows that they care and are as frustrated as everyone else. As long as they don't let their emotions take them out of a disciplined plan of attack, it is good fuel for the Big Orange machine.

Yes he did. He is arrogant!! I'm like dude how many conference games have you won? Not even getting into sec east or bcs titles. He talks like he is Gene Simmons. We're not at the press conference to be blessed by your presence. Dude we want answers!!!! Well Butch your pocket will be full of all of East TN. He keeps saying stuff like to the untrained eye it may seem different than a coaches eye. Fulmer with all his success would never had said that.

not half as arrogant as all the arm chair coaches on here but he is the coach. I dont care if he says that...

Have you been in a comma? Get back to me Nov 1.

Yeah, we should fire the coach in the middle of the year. That always turns out well.

Our fan base is so emotionally unstable and ill informed that we aren't even willing to give CBJ more time than Dooley, even with all of the positives that he has done to rebuild our depleted roster.

Clay Travis was right, we have one of the dumbest fan bases in all of sports.

How butt hurt are you all?
You're just watching it to find something he said and blow it out of proportion.
I'm tired of coach talk too but jesus christ, nothing he says will make you happy so don't watch it.

Your right, how about beating somebody other than Vandy, Ky, SC, and a group of mid-majors.

Ultimately it all comes back to coaching though. Lack of execution/concentration from the players is still a reflection on the coaching staff and what they are doing to prepare these players to perform at their highest level. If they're not executing it's at least 1 of 3 things...

1.) They aren't being taught/coached correctly.

2.) They aren't putting forth max effort.

3.) They simply aren't talented enough to perform at
this level.

All 3 of those factors ultimately fall on coaching. If they're being coached bad technique that's obviously on coaching. It's also the coach's job to find ways to motivate their players, so if the players aren't putting forth max effort, that's still on coaching. If the players aren't talented enough to perform at this level then that's a recruiting/evaluation issue, which is yet again a coaching issue.

The excuses of youth/inexperience and depth can only carry you so far. If this were Butch's first year then I might give him more of a pass but this is year 3. These are HIS players. He's flipped the roster and he's out of excuses. The guy just cannot coach. He's a program manager an a PR guy.

.

You were doing fine, until you invoked the "fan blame" card re: our Administration's inability to get "great coaches to consider the job."

Even the most negative supporters are not the reason we are where we are.

I think that the majority of the fans, alumni, donors, Letterman, etc are not "virulently negative" and are very supportive of the student-athletes and program.

Bottom line, Butch needs to get his act together and start winning games ... period.

I'd have to score you as the dumbest fan of the dumbest fan base in all of sports then. I didn't say anything about firing the coach in the middle of the year. How do you become ill informed by watching the games with your own eyes. Most fans agree with me. Seeing is believing. You should change your name to Bagdad Bob. Copy and paste my post and bring it up again after the season. I'll be right.

That's such a cop-out. Eventually these players need to make plays if they're going to compete at this level. They need to own that yet people hesitate to force that on them. Why?

So our 4 and 5 stars are just the ones who can't make plays.

Meanwhile all the 4 and 5 stars at every other SEC school are getting better and making plays?

Explain it to me please...

Yeah, Poppa, I think you're right. I took that point too far. All I can say in defense is that there is SO much poison and vitriol in VN right now, it's hard to keep it from affecting one's perspective.

On the other hand, the media (both regional and national) are really giving it to Butch right now, and I firmly believe they are getting their cues from social media and internet fandom...they're catering to us, in other words.

So there's some truth to the perspective, even if I overstated it. Probably.
