Or defense is the worst in the SEC... With his players and his coaches...
Yeah, it's the fans!
Yep. We don't deserve to have a good program. We are a whiny entitled fanbase. Why, we didn't even throw a parade for the team after going 6-6 and winning the TaxSlayer Bowl last year!
You know how many teams would kill for a prestigious TaxSlayer Bowl victory?
We just need to shut our mouths and cheer like heck! We can still go 6-6 and get another nice trip to Jacksonville if Dave Hart pulls some strings.
I watched it and was stunned by that.
Unfortunately there was no follow up question to see who he meant.
Certain media members would be my guess.
His face got redder and he was not joking.
Here's the more complete quote, with context:
In context, he said nothing more or less than, "some folks are being real jerks right now, kicking us while we're down, and we're gonna remember that when brighter days come."
In context, that's not arrogant. It is a bit vengeful, but as much crap as he's being given right now, I wouldn't say it's entirely uncalled for.
You ***** and ***** and ***** at someone, don't be surprised when they snap back a little. That's all Butch was doing.
Not the big deal you and a few others are making of it.
I think you're missing the point: the way, the ONLY way, that a coach can win a football game is through his players. They are his tools, his hands. The only means he has.
So if a coach says, "Our QB needs to develop better touch in his throws," the coach isn't just insulting the QB. He's calling out the QB, and the QB position coach, and the offensive coordinator, and himself.
If a coach says, "our defense needs to tackle better," he's not just calling out the players. He's calling out the DC and all those positions coaches, and himself as well.
It seems you're missing that part of a coach's perspective.
Too many people giving up too quickly on a coach who might end up being very good. It's a pity. This virulently negative atmosphere at the first sign of hardship might be part of the reason we have trouble getting great coaches to consider the jobs when we have to go looking.
Maybe we need better fans more than we need a better coach or AD....
The players do need to perform better, but this team is tired of Butch and the 2nd half of that Arkansas game proved it. They have no faith in this staff to get them through.
Yes he did. He is arrogant!! I'm like dude how many conference games have you won? Not even getting into sec east or bcs titles. He talks like he is Gene Simmons. We're not at the press conference to be blessed by your presence. Dude we want answers!!!! Well Butch your pocket will be full of all of East TN. He keeps saying stuff like to the untrained eye it may seem different than a coaches eye. Fulmer with all his success would never had said that.
Have you been in a comma? Get back to me Nov 1.
How butt hurt are you all?
You're just watching it to find something he said and blow it out of proportion.
I'm tired of coach talk too but jesus christ, nothing he says will make you happy so don't watch it.
So that's why they missed tackles and dropped crucial passes?
As bad as the coaching may be at times, if the execution was there the team would be 4-1 at worst. This is on everyone in that locker room

Yeah, we should fire the coach in the middle of the year. That always turns out well.
Our fan base is so emotionally unstable and ill informed that we aren't even willing to give CBJ more time than Dooley, even with all of the positives that he has done to rebuild our depleted roster.
Clay Travis was right, we have one of the dumbest fan bases in all of sports.
Ultimately it all comes back to coaching though. Lack of execution/concentration from the players is still a reflection on the coaching staff and what they are doing to prepare these players to perform at their highest level. If they're not executing it's at least 1 of 3 things...
1.) They aren't being taught/coached correctly.
2.) They aren't putting forth max effort.
3.) They simply aren't talented enough to perform at
this level.
All 3 of those factors ultimately fall on coaching. If they're being coached bad technique that's obviously on coaching. It's also the coach's job to find ways to motivate their players, so if the players aren't putting forth max effort, that's still on coaching. If the players aren't talented enough to perform at this level then that's a recruiting/evaluation issue, which is yet again a coaching issue.

You were doing fine, until you invoked the "fan blame" card re: our Administration's inability to get "great coaches to consider the job."
Even the most negative supporters are not the reason we are where we are.
I think that the majority of the fans, alumni, donors, Letterman, etc are not "virulently negative" and are very supportive of the student-athletes and program.
Bottom line, Butch needs to get his act together and start winning games ... period.
