Pearson isn't coming back people and you can blame Butch for that decision. Pearson is already tied up into the system just like AJ was. They haven't gotten around to doing anything about his case now and it's not going to happen come August either.

The only way you'll know if VP even has a chance will be by the time fall practices start which is generally the first week of August. If he's allowed to practice it's good, otherwise he's gone. I don't see him missing all of fall practice and being allowed to play.

Pipe dream!

I respectfully disagree with this.....:hi:

Really. This is a system problem in dealing with these type events and it changed drastically the last 20 years.

CBJ had only 1 way he could deal with this mess. I am sure that several entities are pressing the process to get this matter resolved.

This is the only decision CBJ can make when considering the accusations and the Incident. If cleared by the DA office does anybody know if the Title IX board has already ruled? Or if they are in a wait and see mode?

Not entirely accurate.

Part of the delay in the AJ Johnson case was the fact that the incident happened at year end, where you deal with Holidays and a new Grand Jury being seated in January. If I'm not mistaken the DA waited until January since they knew a new GJ would be in place. And that's not early January either.

FWIW the beat writers all seem to think Pearson is reinstated unless something new comes out.

I don't say much on these things, at least from a legal standpoint, because I have no expertise. However, from previous experience of just following news etc.. This does seem like a really long time just to make a decision IF... Repeat, IF, the story we heard is anywhere near what law enforcement is looking at.

We can blame Butch? What kind of stupidity is this? Blame him for handling the situation appropriately? Perspective, have some.

Someone finally gets the Title IX implications. It doesn't matter what KPD or the DA do, it is all up to the internal Title IX investigation, and my guess is that that probably won't start until after school begins in the fall.

I don't blame Butch for the decision. His hands are tied. He can't take the risk of knowingly allowing a player who is being investigated for rape to play football, because if charges somehow stuck, it would be a PR and negative recruiting disaster.,.
I hear what you're saying, however; I bet I'm not alone when I think the PR nightmare is just as big a nightmare if he misses this year and after dragging ass the DA and UT clear VP. I have to say, Butch and UT would get a pass from me (not that I matter in the scheme of things) if they cleared him now based on "Innocent until proven guilty". If found guilty, then immediately suspend, dismiss, or whatever. As much as I love the VOLS and bleed ORANGE, I would have to carefully consider if I wanted to play for a team that would immediately drop me based on "accusations" alone.

Outside of a few fans, there would be no PR hit whatsoever if VP misses the season and is ultimately cleared. No coach in America would negative recruit against Butch for suspending a player that's being investigated for rape (because, Jimbo Fisher aside, they'd all do the same thing), and no newspaper/media outlet in America would run articles suggesting Butch did the wrong thing by suspending him.

The only difference perhaps between Butch and other coaches is that other coaches, particularly in the SEC, may have more influence in the local PD and could expedite the process for investigating a case that likely has no legs. Butch seems content to let it play out at its own pace, or maybe the KPD simply enjoys having leverage over the program in some way and is intentionally dragging its feet.

KPD wants bribes or free tickets maybe, and the AD wont cave in to them.

I don't think it's anything this easy to solve, heh. But it does make you wonder if there's bad blood between the KPD / DA's Office on one side and the University on the other. Something that might cause an institutional inertia to settle in around cases that could hurt the program's image or well being.

Not claiming that, just saying the extreme lethargy of the VP case causes one to wonder....

This is an incisive comment. Recent history indicates a clear pattern of delay by law enforcement in Knox County with reference to UT athletes. This is intolerable, even if one is not a UT fan. For the elected officials in Knox County to allow one segment of the population to be discriminated against is untenable, and this state of affairs should be publicized until it halts. If this is allowed to go unfettered, recruiting will suffer.

If blacks were treated this way, it would NOT be allowed to go unchecked. If Hispanics, it would not be tolerated. If whites were allowed to twist slowly in the wind, someone would put a halt to it. Why, then, are the athletes at the University of Tennessee second-class citizens who are not entitled to the same groundswell of support these other groups would surely receive?

SOMEONE needs to speak out for these kids. It is downright EVIL what is happening to these young people.

As Burke said, and I paraphrase, all that is required for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.
WHO WILL STEP UP AND ACT FOR THESE KIDS?

If VP is innocent and cops are slow playing the case that is dispicable ..

Butch is between a rock and a hard place. If he reinstated VP, before being criminally cleared, the media would trash the him and the university. But, if it turns out that VP is never reinstated, but is later cleared, the fans will be upset. While I believe in "innocent until proven guilty", I can see why CBJ is treating the matter the way he is. His first obligation is to protect the university. He knows we are on the way up, and is trying to do everything he can to keep that momentum going. But, the only way CBJ doesn't lose in this situation, is if VP is charged.

I've seen murder charges go quicker than it takes Knox County police to write a speeding ticket.

It seems true. I was at UT in the early 90s and it seemed even back then the KPD did whatever it took to cause problems for the University and it's students.

If they had clear and convincing evidence is a case such as this, I would think it would be discovered within the first week or two of the investigation. What else can be brought to light this late in the investigation?

Can someone tell me what they mean by "Right to a speedy trial"? Do not get me wrong, if he did something wrong, he needs to be held responsible, but this is ridiculous.

He has not been charged with anything. Any right to a speedy trial doesn't apply.
