Von Pearson Update

He is still on the team. Has never been taken off. He is just suspended from team activities. He is able to work out and attend school. His grades are fine and he's enrolled for the fall.

Yes, thanks for the correction. I suppose I wasn't accurate enough. But not on the team and suspended from team activities mostly puts us in the same position unless resolved by game day. Surely KPD will have made a move by then. Or not.

It's the KPD. They don't give a ****

There are so many different ways to act, this isn't the only one. You're labeling him a rapist merely on allegations when there haven't been any formal charges. You say "let him back into the fold", but he's not "out of the fold". He's not detained or locked up in some jail so it's not like he's being "let go" from somewhere. He's simply been banned from team activities. This doesn't help anyone or achieve anything, it just sends a player into limbo.
I wasn't labeling anybody a rapist, just saying that's it's in the programs best interest ultimately to let an investigation take place before you allow a player to fully return to team activities because of the possibility that a player in this situation could be guilty of rape.

They've gotta protect the image of the program first and foremost. It's not a perfect system, but it's consistent and is for the best ultimately.

If he doesn't make it back until mid to late season, he could be redshirted for 2016 if the other WRs are producing at that point. Butch has shown he will sacrifice the present for the future in several cases.

On the other hand, Von seems to be pretty worn out on the whole College Thing. And it's possible that Butch has gotten just a bit cool on Von. So the two might align in their preference for Von to go ahead and play out his senior year of eligibility (assuming this all gets cleaned up in time for at least part of a season) and move on to his post-collegiate future.

Did you pull those first two sentences out of your ass?

I have no idea if Von would be eligible for a redshirt season but I see no chance of that happening. Von is already 24 years old and a RS season would put him right at 26 by the 2017 draft.

Heh, thanks for the polite and thoughtful reply.

Look, I could be wrong on this. But here's my resaoning: late fall 2014, AJ Johnson gets suspended from the team for an alleged incident with a woman of a sexual nature. Coaches clearly state the type of behavior alleged is not tolerated at Tennessee. You know they spend some time reinforcing that with the players. Less than six months later, in spring 2015, Von Pearson gets suspended from the team for an alleged incident with a woman of a sexual nature.

I could be way off, but that has the distinct feel of a young man rebelling against authority ("I do what I want"), or at the very least not paying too much attention to the coaching leadership. And that sounds like a guy who is ready to be free of the restrictions that come with being part of a college program.

Seniors get itchy to move on with their lives. It's human nature, happens to most seniors. It would actually be shocking if Von were not starting to tire of college life.

Add that plus his alleged non-compliance with the direction of the coaches, and it seems to add up to a guy who is probably about ready to graduate and move on to the next stage of his life.

As for the possibility I mentioned about Butch being cool on Von because of this alleged incident, come on. You think Butch hasn't been frustrated by this, and hasn't give Von a good earful about keeping himself out of situations like this, putting the team at risk this way?

I'm finding it a little surprising that you guys are shocked by these pretty common-sense speculations.

Known fact? Absolutely not. But entirely possible? Oh yes. Likely, even, I'd say.

Seniors get itchy to move on with their lives. Happens to all seniors (except for that tiny minority who love being career students and stay on for 5 masters and a doctorate). It would actually be shocking if Von were not starting to tire of college life.

Von is gay. He is using this whole incident as a beard. He knows that Butch is a homophobe that wouldn't let him stay on the team if he was outed, so Von is just protecting his rep.

"Fact? Absolutely not. But entirely possible? Oh yes."

My assertions make as much sense as yours.

Yea he hated it so much he played the previous season in front of 600 fans.

Playing in front on 100K + and having one of your practice catches on Sports Center sure must have been rough on him. I feel for the guy having to drudge through collegiate celebrity.

For all you or I know this "alleged incident" could be akin to GOAT Peyton Manning tea bagging that chick on the trainers table oh so many years ago. A time before knuckleheads debated law and a college kid's level of commitment on the internet with nothing more than their version of common sense or flimsy moral high ground in their arsenal.

Saying, "my life sucks" (which is what you appear to be implying) is far different from being ready to move on.

I loved my 26 years in uniform serving our country. But at the end, I was 100% ready to move on.

Von's life doesn't "suck." Never implied that it does. But even rock stars get to a point where they're ready for the next thing.

For Von, the next thing is (potentially) a pro career.

So you're saying you don't think Von's at that point yet, not yet ready to move on to the next thing. Maybe not.

Then again, maybe so.

Seems to me more likely that he is.

Just to be clear, you're saying that Von has senioritis and that made him decide to go rape somebody, because, well, why not?

^^Makes perfect common sense to him.

Plus Butch Jones told him after AJ raped that girl that he doesn't like raping at Tennessee. Von ignored his advice so obviously Von is going pro.
