Your total is now 2100... well said.I don't think you're dumb, '87, but I do think maybe you're a little naive.
The average American is entirely blind to the extent of protection they receive just by virtue of living in a land governed by the rule of law and policed in the enforcement of those laws. You don't even need ever to see a policeman to be protected by this culture; you are protected nonetheless.
The most extreme alternative is anarchy. None of us in VN have ever experienced anarchy, unless a VFL out there spent time in Somalia. The closest I personally ever came was Haiti; it was a lot like the wild west of America's early 1800s ... but even that wasn't true anarchy, because of the US military and our 'friendly invasion' in parts of the country.
No, here's true anarchy: if I'm stronger than you, I whip the crap out of you and take your stuff. If I'm richer than you, I hire some young guns to take over your town and make it mine. The only law is the law of raw brutal power. And 99% of us would be the virtual slaves of those rich enough to hire the biggest posse. You have weapons in your night stands? Great, I and my crew will take them when we come to establish our hegemony over you and your family. That's anarchy. It is inherently unstable and almost always gives way to dictatorship of those with the most raw power.
I deplore the loss of life at the hands of policemen. Or any men. Fact is, though, the vast, vast majority of cops are there to serve their communities, and do the best they can while spending most of their time interacting with the parts of society who respect the law least.
So generalizing from a limited number of heart-breaking incidents is pretty naive. You don't need to use those weapons you keep in your night stands on a daily basis because you live in a country where the rule of law reigns. You can thank the nation's police forces for much of that.
