Update on Henry T

Give him a break the coach that recruited him just got fired, the program was in upheaval, we're still in the middle of a pandemic lots of crap for a kid to be going thru. He was just looking at his options. People look at new job opportunities all the time, sometimes they leave sometimes the stay: doesn't make them bad people for looking at their options.
Looking at options and his Dad trashing the program is two completely different things.

If he transfers, so be it, the coaching staff that recruited him is gone. If he stays, so be it. He's a two down linebacker in a nickel defense era. At best he improves in coverage, at worst he is a body in the thinnest position group on the roster. Either way, wish him well.

If he wants to play for the Vols then let’s get to work. This stuff is not personal...it’s business. And I’m at the forefront of wanting accountability and commitment. But there’s a lot out there that was supposedly said by HT or his dad but has been refuted by several people. At this point we need him more than he needs us. And his inabilities are well documented here as well. Dare I say the obvious...the inside slant.

So basically, as in some other cases with the athlete-parent dynamic, the mama/papa/random "concerned relative" has an inflated opinion of the weight of their words while the young adult is going his own way. Good on HT if he stays...not just because the team could use the talent, but because that sorta shows that (seemingly) he's growing into his own person and taking control of his own destiny.

He’s not really that good, but yay, I guess.
Regressed in almost every sense after they had him lose weight. I'm not sure why that would make him look worse against the pass but he did. Some of that may have been the inability to replace Shamburger at Star.

It would not make sense to go through spring ball here and then transfer out. If he is wanting to transfer out, smarter to do before spring ball so you can go through spring program at destination school. Transfer after and you are already behind the learning curve for the fall.

Just me personally I wouldn’t have much to do with him I wouldn’t look at him the same as a teammate
You never will know what sort of drama and intrigues occurred during the last games of the season as Pruitt's ship was sinking. Probably a LOT of friction in the assistant coaching ranks and their relationship to Pruitt, and it was becoming obvious of the pending infractions. I would suggest Henry T was evaluating the toxicity of the whole situation and probably (rightfully so) beginning to understand it was a 4 alarm dumpster fire.

I would hope that he has enough VFL in him to want to help right the ship, and if so, he will endear himself to the fanbase, BUT... under the circumstances, I think if he comes back, his teammates won't hold it against him.

As for Henry T's dad trashing the program (and I didn't hear about this, just repeating a post here), It's not like he was the only one. Just look at the posts here on VolNation during the last half of the season. The program WAS trash. Henry T's dad just might be "captain obvious".

As far as I know, I didn't hear anything from his mouth to my ears. Just a whole lot of people assuming and interpreting what they think he said. As to that? Who cares?
I thought he posted a tweet basically saying his son came to TN to play for Pruitt and that he wouldn't make the same mistake again. Alluded to AL being his destination.

So he is not going to let his son play for an ethically challenged coach going forward. Maybe they have determined that JH and staff propose no risk. With the the ONE TIME not yet the law of the land, going elsewhere has another risk element. Checking out spring here might be a valid option. Playing it smart is not a bad plan. This is the only place he can for sure play next year, his third after HS which makes him draft eligible. If we have treated him with a little class maybe it will pay off.

Well if he did not have his heart in it enough to stay through the hard times the past couple of months why would you think he now has heart?

After Henry T’s freshman season I said on more than one occasion that the way he played reminded me of Luke Kuechley. He showed that much to me that early. Obviously last season he didn’t show out the same way . We can all speculate as to why, my theory is that Nieds was coaching the ILB’s and Henry T wasn’t used to his body weight . Once Henry T starts getting real coaching again and I also get my wish, which is a simplified system that allows our guys to play fast then I expect to see the guy we saw his freshman season.

He’s a difference maker and I hope he comes back fully invested to lead the D. Personally, I think he can build on his draft stock just by being back and showing leadership after all the adversity within our program, not just by his playing performance.

He didn't "leave". He entered the portal to give himself flexibility and time to get to know the new staff.

You have no basis for questioning his "heart" other than an uninformed bias. I don't know either... his teammates very likely do. If they've been "recruiting him" then that tells you and me what we need to know about where they think his "heart" is.

I suspect he shopped himself around the portal like they all do and found limited options. Take off you rose colored glasses for a moment and ponder the fact that he even looked elsewhere. He is a mercenary not a hero.
Very,very correct!

Take off your beer goggles and rehydrate. If after the mess this program has made you can't see why a kid might have some doubt, you ain't thinking straight.
