Ukraine Protests

Potential indeed.

Turkey’s Air Force revealed Tuesday that it scrambled eight F-16 fighter jets a day earlier after a Russian surveillance plane flew parallel along its Black Sea coast, according to Reuters.

I used to have folks I could contact to confirm, but since retirement...

In my opinion something like this has huge factors to go way wrong especially when you are in an international crisis. If they want to send a message in a subtle, but also very clear manner they'd start buzzing carriers with their naval bombers or attempting penetration of the ADIZ in Alaska like they used to back in the Cold War days. That gets the message across very clearly.

Kerry/obama threaten sanctions
Putin laughs and threatens the US
Fires a test missile there after.

Awfully convenient if you ask me.

Awfully provocative in times like these.

Putin being Putin and all, I don't think an escalation of that level would be warranted unless we aren't getting all the info from behind the scenes. Which could entirely be the case.

Got to wonder if NK will back Putin if things went south.

I'm sure they would have no problem cheering for Russia against us or NATO, but a little country called China would tell ole' Kim Jung to shut the hell up and go sit at the kid's table.

I don't think China would get involved until we did or if we was attacked. Would Japan break the treaty & also join? Lots of things **could** go wrong. I just hope Obama knows what he is doing.

My point about China is that they would tell North Korea to stop if NK threatened military support for Russia. The last thing China wants again is another war in the Korean Peninsula involving massive amounts of US forces.

And China will not join either side of this fight. I think there's some thinking that China would join Russia against us, but if I'm being honest, I think China would be more likely to join us before Russia in an actual war. All pointless to talk about though, because they'd probably just sit it out.

The eastern portion of the Ukraine where there is significant Russian support.

I'm not suggesting this justifies a military action on our part, but what would be next on Putin's agenda? In your opinion of course.

I really don't know.

I am sure we have our intelligence estimates of what his plan is and I imagine that is the basis for our reaction. If he goes a lot further and it starts to impact security for NATO allies and such, then I would think we'd ratchet up the response, to match it.

Right now, no one is shooting at anyone, Russia has 16k troops in an area where they have ports and a long, long history of presence and indeed occupation and control. Are tensions high that it could get worse? Sure. But not right now, is all I'm saying.

China is actually in a unique position to elevate themselves in this matter by being the neutral and unbiased third party in negotiations. They have an opportunity to come in and broker a deal with both parties to an acceptable outcome.

Crazier things have happened.

Yep, they're a third party, and the only thing they would do militarily is smack North Korea upside the head if Kim Jung actually thought about fighting on Russia's side.

Like Putin brokering a chemical weapons deal with Syria?

It would make it much easier, and less prone to miscalculation, if the US and Russia specifically stated what its interests were in all of the worldwide flareups and conflicts, but I suppose I can see how that would be a disadvantage since it would seem to green light the other for adventures not in the relative sphere of influence of the other.

But that's also what makes for war -- underestimating the other side's resolve.

You are still expecting O to be truthful, about anything?

I don't think Putin wants a deal. You can bet on NK backing him. Would the M.E & Syria join? That's my question. I think if Putin takes Ukraine without our Aid things will get ugly.

North Korean won't "join" a side in this. Condemn the US and Europe, sure, that's pretty much expected for us Capitalist Dogs. But actively participating in a conflict? No, not a chance.

Worked for Putin didn't it? People started taking him more serious in the stage of world affairs.

We may not have agreed with the deal that was made, but the fact he trumped us gave him a lot of clout in the geopolitical realm.

Interfax-Ukraine is reporting Ukrainian sailors aboard the Slavutich have fought off an armed boarding attempt.
