Ukraine Protests

MOSCOW, March 4 (Reuters) - Russia said it had successfully test-fired an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) on Tuesday, with tensions high over its seizure of control in the Crimea and its threat to send more forces to its neighbour Ukraine.

The Strategic Rocket Forces launched an RS-12M Topol missile from the southerly Astrakhan region near the Caspian Sea and the dummy warhead hit its target at a proving ground in Kazakhstan, the state-run news agency RIA cited Defence Ministry spokesman Igor Yegorov as saying.

No worries! Obama will threat him with words! That'll do the trick. Our fearless leader will then attend a basketball game. /S

So Russia just test fired an ICBM.

Multiple sources are stating it. But I don't think we can know for sure unless the pentagon states it for fact. Other than that we have no real proof what is happening inside Russia

Edited: it is confirmed.

Put ins response to Kerry and obama?

NATO and Russia to hold a rare joint talk tomorrow in Brussels. Apparently Poland requested the meeting. I don't blame them.

what happens when the rest of Ukraine refuses to do business with the Russian occupied areas? Or the Russian pipelines that crisscross Ukraine are threatened?

If the remainder of the Ukraine refuses to do business with the Crimea and Eastern Ukraine, I could see them declaring independence and being outright annexed by the Russians.

The pipelines are a significant bargaining tool. Having said that, the remainder of Europe would turn their backs on the Ukrainians if they targeted the pipelines in any kind of insurgent acts or terrorism. It hurts Europe more than the individual groups and right now they hold the upper hand in the morality of this. Random acts of aggression and terrorism do nothing to help their cause.

Normally those kinds of things are coordinated in advance. An unannounced missile test during times of increased tensions is a recipe for disaster.

Chances are we knew about it in advance, but those things don't always make the press.

You aren't serious are you?

Yeah, you don't just wake up in the morning and say "hey, how about a good ole ICBM firing today".

Positively serious. We let the Russians know when we test our ICBM fleet and they do the same with us. I can tell you the exact building on the exact base where it happens.

Forgot the room number though.

I don't believe that's the case this time. This was a show of force to the USA. To stay out of it. Plain and simple.

I don't think Putin is playing with a full deck

Might already be posted but CNN reporting that the test-fire was scheduled before the Ukrainian crisis.

It was on the books: just not for today.

Senior US official says Russia's test launch was 'on the books for some time' prior to Ukraine crisis, but timing is 'auspicious' - @NBCNews

I used to have folks I could contact to confirm, but since retirement...

In my opinion something like this has huge factors to go way wrong especially when you are in an international crisis. If they want to send a message in a subtle, but also very clear manner they'd start buzzing carriers with their naval bombers or attempting penetration of the ADIZ in Alaska like they used to back in the Cold War days. That gets the message across very clearly.

Gotta admit a kindergarten classroom seems an odd place for such comments. Surely they could change the venue or hold a separate event even outside. The rug is a classic.

If Putin did launch a surprise test that is one hell of a di#k measuring contest.

Putin with a yardstick
Obama with a protractor
