Ukraine Protests

This actually isn't that far off.

People need to realize that, while the US won the Cold War and the Soviet Union collapsed and the Russians went from being a legitimate fear to a complete joke... they didn't forget.

The US is their enemy #1. They had the Illegals Program (using more than just ethnic Russians) cracked open in 2010 and it's very much thought that only scratches the surface. Don't think for a second that the Russians don't have programs in place to attempt to undermine and destabilize the US.

So if you were Russian and you were trying to destabilize the US... wouldn't you fund and encourage radical groups that work against the "status quo" of the US? Wouldn't you exacerbate foreign policy blunders the US made?

That's basically how the US turned the USSR against itself.

Can the Cold War truly end without both parties agreeing to end it? I don't believe the Russians ever conceded, just moved it into a different style and fight.

I was using American vernacular.

It never really ended for the Russians. Putin is very much a "Soviet Re-Union" kinda guy and I adamantly doubt he ever conceded the Cold War ended. As you said, it's more of a "we're not retreating, we're attacking in a different direction".

Nothing is more terrifying than an economically desperate people that are prideful and are humiliated globally seeing their rivals enjoy the fruits of success. Then even more alarming when the leader of said country uses "we're freeing ethic XXX peoples!" when annexing territories wholesale.

And that leader of that nation is met with nothing but muted and tucked-tail response from the international community.

The rise of BRICS will only further spell bad news for the maligned and self-loathing Western nations. We're going to get what we asked for.

Agreed. It's going to be a rude awakening for the West when we they finally realized the Cold War is back and ill-prepared to fight it.

this. this all reads straight out of pre-WWII Germany.

Country A loses previous war and is broken up and becomes destitute. Rest of the world also takes the economic plunge and the other countries become too focused on their own issues so don't step up when country A begins re-seizing territory and making extremist statements. the other countries also do nothing while country A makes alliances with other aggrieved nations and begins making extreme remarks about others. all the while country A is under the leadership of a driven, well spoken, idealistic leader who pushes the extreme talk against foreign countries seeing them as the cause for their problems and all those who don't fit within his idealized version of the future. And all the while country A rebuilds its military and dominion under the disguise of 'merely stabilizing' itself, despite clear intentions and policies that say otherwise.

Who is they? Powers that be in the Russian government? Joe Blow on the streets?

Putin, the Russian administration and, thanks to pretty much all Russian media being state (read: Kremlin) controlled... the Russian people.

Russia-1, Channel One Russia and NTV feed 85% of all Russians their televised media. All 3 of them are state-owned. This would be like the Congress owning ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox.

Russia Today is state-funded. And yet, people will still post their drivel on here.

Because of the pervasive authority that the Russian state controls... people will parrot what they've been told to think. Give them "5 independent and unbiased voices" that are all controlled by a singular source... they'll start echoing it. Russia is re-igniting anti-Western sentiment and propaganda and polls reflect this.

Add to this China is seeing more and more Western manufacturing pull out combined with what may be the start of the collapse of their housing bubble and this could be a very dangerous situation considering Russia is now having to rely on China being their export partner since they've Kremlin'd their way out of Europe as a Gasprom market.

Lets hope it's just all pomp and no circumstance.

I was careful to phrase it with an adherence to facts but with enough vagueness as to let people draw their own conclusions.

There are definitely some stark parallels between them.

Like i said i took the script leading up to WWII removed the words Germany and Hitler from it. what you are left with is some strikingly familiar happenstances from Russia. if i have missed anything from the historical i will gladly edit my post.

If you don't think MSM isn't controlled by the US government then I have some oceanfront property in Djibouti you might be interested in...

Certainly a good number of people on here even are doing nothing but spouting off party lines fed to certain MSM outlets.

However, all media in Russia is state-controlled and issue a singular opinion. The US at least still has some modicum of free-speech and ability to question government decisions and the party-controlled outlets at least offer differing opinions given what stance they want their viewers to take.

So, difference between party-controlled outlets and all outlets being singularly controlled.

Out of intrigue, Pacer (and Rasputin, if you're around - you've been MIA for a week or more), how do you define the two Russian-Chechen wars of the previous two decades?

Well, Pygmalion apparently doesn't want to answer. Pacer?

While claiming to be no expert on the Chechen wars, I see similarity in the ethnic portion of this Ukrainian civil war, if that's what you're asking?!

The main difference I see is the evolution leading up to these wars..
