The Weightlifters Thread

I am sort of forced to quit to a certain degree during season.

But I know what you mean. I don't like quitting either. When you do though, it is difficult to get back into it. Luckily it doesn't take too long for my muscles to get back close to where they were. Just sore for the first couple of weeks.

Getting started back up is difficult. I've lifted 3 times this week which is really good for my lazy a$$. Good thing is that once you've lifted for a long time you just knock the rust off and the muscle memory kicks in. By the way, how was your season this year?

Yeah man, I agree. These last 3 days (Monday-Wednesday) have been the first serious consecutive lifting days I've done since last summer. I am hurting so bad. I don't even think I will go to the gym tonight. But you are right. The muscle memory usually kicks in pretty quickly and I can feel good about it again.

And thanks for asking O&W, I appreciate it. The season from a team's standpoint was a little disappointing. We were picked preseason to finish 7th out of 8 teams in our conference. We surprised some people in conference and finished 4th with a conference record of 4-3, but we lost all our OOC games and finished 4-6. Not very good.

I feel somewhat content with my season personally. I ended up really messing up my hamstring pretty bad mid-season and missed 2 weeks. I still led the team in tackles and finished 5th in total tackles in the conference despite playing only 8 games. But I still wasn't pleased. It was my first time ever having to miss games due to injury and I didn't like it at all. I could have played better all year too. But there is always the next year. Getting in the weightroom early this year. Trying to get better for next year. We will see how it goes.

I'll be asking you and the rest of the weightlifting experts for advice all offseason. Appreciate everything you bring to VN.

Tough to go through injuries. I wasn't a great football player, but I was good enough to start my senior year. I had never been injured and ended up separating both shoulders at different times, and then getting a back injury that ended my season. I missed like a total of 7 weeks or something. It was pretty depressing to miss out on my only chance to really play varsity. I still had a pick at homecoming (I played CB), and that was the highlight of my HS career....Yay me.

I agree with you there, nbakerld. It was pretty depressing missing just those 2 games. I couldn't imagine missing 7 games, especially senior year in high school.

I still love playing football, no matter the level, but I would have been devastated if I would have missed any of my senior year of high school. That is a special year. But at least you got to play and get an INT in the HC game.

Using NO-Xplode.....PowerFULL....Universal's Animal Pak....OxyElite....MyoFusion....other than the pinched nerve in my neck which only affects my shoulder workouts and incline bench....I have seen tremendous gains in my strength...took about 3 months off....and last bench workout went like this...315 for 10...335 for 8....365 for 6....405 for 3...Squats are over 500 right now...and Triceps are xploding...did 325 for 5 reps on close bench...Back strength is improving...up to 2 pull ups unassisted...I know I know thats bad but I weigh 290....still deadlifting 405 for reps...better at pushes than pulls....if I could get myself to eat clean and lose down to about 225-230 I would b cut pretty good...I am a power lifter and I am in awe of the Crossfit people...cant seem to get the drive for that type of workout....guess I am a Meathead....

Love this. I hate it when people say, "I don't wanna get too big" as if that's an easy thing to do, or that you could accidentally fall into it.

That is hilarious. So true.

Can't wait to start the new year. My shoulder isn't much better after 2 weeks off, but I'll give it til Monday. Maybe have to get it looked at.

You should probably get it checked out. With no improvement you could have torn something, or that could happen when you start lifting again.

It's my rotator cuff, and it hasn't been 100% probably since HS (2000). I made it worse in softball this past fall. I can lift around it, pain-free, but it's not getting better. Sucks.

That is the worst, I used to have pain in my rotator cuff and my doctor said I would need surgery within 5 years. Luckily I do not have pain anymore.

Beast. Bummer we didn't offer him.

That's pretty common for me (except for maybe with delts), but everybody is different. I kind of guage my routine based on soreness. If I'm not getting really sore, I feel like I need to change things up.

And legs are the worst. I can be very sore from that for 4+ days (rarely, though, when I train legs on the reg).
