The Weightlifters Thread

It depends on the gym. We did 30 min sessions, if they wanted to do more than had to use another session. They bought a package with so many sessions so they had a set number of workouts. I got 15 dollars per session. I did 7 hours a week of training. It was a great college job, and it also let me work at my schools gym.

Got a buddy that's going to work on his certification this summer (not sure which one). He's already training 5 people at Gold's Gym after working there for a couple years now. He's making bank working a lot less than I do and going to school for sports nutrition (I think). Really makes me wish I had gone that way. A huge plus are the clients he has. Damn.

I'm sold. I can go back to school after I start working.

I've done freelance training for a few people. Knowing your stuff helps, but having people skills and keeping them engaged and enjoying their experience is by far the most important thing.

If you don't know what you're doing, you'll lose clients after a few months. If you're not a good motivator and teacher, you'll lose them immediately.

I'm not sure how the middle eastern bro trainer keeps his clients (think Brock from Pokemon, kinda)... every time I've heard him talk it's just so boring and condescending. He knows his stuff, but geez... no enthusiasm.

There's one guy at the 24 hour fitness I go to, he has a female power lifter client. A few months back, she was deadlifting three plates, and he was cussing at her to motivate her. It was hilarious. (it worked btw)

I think part of my lack of motivation is not having a partner. I never lacked motivation when my hs football coach was screaming in my face and threatening burpees if I didn't do "one more rep" after "one more rep".

The etiquette that is important to me is sharing the equipment, and putting the plates back. People used to be polite and would allow other people to work in if they were using a squat rack, bench, etc. People expected to have to share the equipment if someone needed to work in.

This used to be common place and gave you a chance to meet other lifters, but I don't know what happened, but you never see it anymore. If you even dare ask now, if you can work in with someone between their sets on a piece of equipment, they act like they have ownership and are offended. Maybe it's just a general decline in manners over the years.

I stopped doing it because I found that more often than not, it ruined my timing. I like to run 45 secs between sets, a minute at absolute most. I can't do that if I'm working in.

I always offer to hold the equipment for them, and usually people don't ask me until I have a set or two left anyways, so I ask them if they can sit tight for a minute or two.

I've seen some pretty sorry ass trainers at Gold's. There's no way I'd get training from a 25 year old girl who is lumpy and 30lbs overweight, but they hired her for some reason. A lot of them have no idea what they are doing, IMO. Some of them are very good, though too.

No doubt. I'd guesstimate around 80% of personal trainers I've met at your fast food chain gyms (24, Ballys, Golds, LA, etc.) have little to no idea about what they're doing.

That's what she's told me. The reason I want it is b/c I would like to open a training facility/studio with her. She has a lot of clients and is certified in a ton of classes. She has 50 people show up for her Zumba classes alone. Charging 5-10 per head per class has me rethinking business strategy from college....

In right place a gym can kill. Don't over do it and start small and build up your base.

CSCS is the gold standard no matter were you go. It's worth the money and the trouble of getting it and keeping it.

Worked legs yesterday after work. Sore is an understatement. Walking the stairs at the house was an adventure...
