The Weightlifters Thread

Sorry if I struck a nerve. How do you lift just to shape muscles & not get stronger? Everybody I know lifts to get stonger & build muscle & getting bigger & more defined is part of it.

Power lifting is a sport (you referenced the rule that they have to touch chest). I don't train to compete in that sport. I train to be in the best shape I can. So I do train heavy, but I don't do it for the sake of lifting heavy. I do it for shape.

I referenced a bench competition because you have to do a full, proper rep. I still don't get how the hell you just shape a muscle how you want it but I promise not touching your chest is gonna benefit your muscle shape. If anything it will hurt it. Maybe you're saying your a bodybuilder if shape is your thing & watching those guys workout I've never seen a one not touch.

I believe in full ROM. For me, that's touching your chest. Shoulder problems are another story.

It kind of depends on how you define full range of motion. For instance I don't completely lock out at the top, but some would consider that full ROM, but to me that guy is resting.

For instance I am tall and thin (6' 2", 200), so my chest is slim and my arms are long. If I bring the bar down to an inch above my chest my ROM is probably still wider than most.

I tend to go farther down when I do dumb bells (I work out 115 lb DB's) and I think that's an indication that my strength doesn't suffer from not going all the way on barbell (I work out with 245 lbs). That seems proportionate to me.

Not touching your chest doesn't hurt anything.

I would definitely touch if I had a 2 foot thick chest. I have a wider range of motion than every pro bodybuilder in the world.

If your arms are that long grip a little wider & your range of motion will be proportionate to everybody else. I'm not "bishing" I just think your selling yourself short. Do you not do full squats because you have longer legs?

Bench is different from squats, IMO. I get my hams slightly past parallel to the ground. If bench were the same as squat you would go until your triceps are slightly past parallel to the ground, but none of us do that, the benchmark is lower than that.

I go a pretty wide grip already, if I go much wider I'm gonna pinch my fingers racking the weight. I'm pretty pleased with how I look and my progress, too. :dance2: :pepper:

Legs for me tomorrow. That's going to suck! I absolutely F'n hate hamstrings!

Onto something else. Does anyone have their ACE or NASM certification? I've been looking into that.

Been working on ACE for a while... Tough to work in with work and school.

100% of the advice I've received from industry vets says that ACE will do the best job of getting you work.

Yea, some guys come in with no plan or structure & expect results. 2 sets of 135 on bench or some crap. Then the guys that don't touch their chest when they bench like that's more beneficial. Or the guys that try to squat or leg press way too much weight & barely bend their knees. Or the guys that break their back curling. I laugh when I hear a guy say I wanna get cut but not too big.

I left one out. The shoulder shrug guy that rolls his shoulders asking to tear a rotator cuff. Of course if he's rolling his shoulders it's not much weight anyway.

What does an average trainer with a good certification even charge? I'm sure it varies. I've also always wondered how they work with gyms.
