My point is, Cuba has collapsed multiple times, so what is being accomplished here or what is the goal?

Any way you try to rationalize this, it absolutely is a reversal from the "America first," no nation-building mantra that was at one time Trump's foreign policy doctrine.

More than anything, Trump is an opportunist .... and his following will always support him, regardless of his wildly inconsistent positions. I'm not sure how to make sense of his foreign policy any more. He's all over the damn place, and accountable to nobody.

No question Trump's taking a big risk here. Whether this was a good move or not depends on how things work out. If it results in a country with free elections and not anti USA then it's a good move and not much else will matter.

China needs oil sanction free. They bought a very significant portion of their oil from Venezuela.

If they attack and are sanctioned they'll need a friendly country somewhere to buy oil from, that was Venezuela until this weekend.

I don't think Venezuela's so important to them as an oil source though. Russia's right next door if things get tight.
