The Runner's thread

Thanks for the tips, I'll definitely keep the above in mind. I've lifted since I was 12 (I'm almost 26 now) and I've learned when to take it easy and when it's just my body being a p*ssy lol. If you are tired and don't rest you usually end up straining something and what should've been a day of rest is now 4 days of forced rest/recovery haha. But I went and got nice running shoes and custom made inserts for my feet, etc. I should be good to go!

By the way, if anyone has experience with maintaining muscular size/strength with moderate distance running, I'd love to hear your story. Several of my body builder friends tell me I'm crazy and I'm going to lose size, etc. Personally I'd love to lose size if it means I get my agility and cardiovascular endurance in great shape. I want to be an athlete again, not a sack of meat. But I'd really like to still be roughly as strong as I currently am.

The lack of compatibility between endurance exercise and resistance training is often overstated and based on a series of studies in the 80s using 40-60 min of high intensity running immediately prior to resistance training - not practical. Actually, recent data suggest that performing moderate endurance exercise in the morning combined with resistance exercise in the evening leads to the greatest rates of muscle hypertrophy reported in the literature. If you're attempting to maximize your running ability while trying to maintain a high level of muscle mass/strength then you may have an issue, but that's an unrealistic expectation.

There is no reason why you can't maintain a substantial portion of your strength while increasing your running. If you increase your running and decrease your resistance training then you should expect some compromise, but most data suggest you can maintain strength pretty well by cutting down on resistance training volume but maintaining intensity (lift to failure at least once a week).

3.5 last night with a 7:26 pace. The run was miserable. It was cold and wet plus a little over a mile into the run there was water across the path that was about 2-3 inches deep and there was no way to avoid it. Running over 2 miles with wet shoes, socks, and feet sucks.

Easy 2.5 today in 25:53 on my usual hills. Felt like the easiest run I've ever done. I listened to a podcast the whole time, it makes running so easy.

Weekly Total: 11.38 miles

3.5 this afternoon. Cold, windy and sunny. 7:25 pace. First half of the run was pretty slow but picked up the pace the second half.

Weekly total: 11 miles

T minus 24 hrs. Friend told me everyone the first 2 miles of the race are pretty much unrunnable. This should be interesting.

Good luck tri. What have you been doing this week to prepare?

Nothing. was sick at the end of last week. went to the gym Monday for light core work and was whipped after 30 minutes. Decided to lay off this week and try to be 100% by Saturday.

Understandable.... this race is how many miles?

20. Friend said first tenth of a mile is flat then the next 2 miles is up hill & unrunnable because of large embedded rocks. rest of the trail is mixture of embedded rock, mud & creek crossings.

trying to be mentally calm today.

You got this! Sounds like fun... minus the 20 miles.

7.0 in 70:49 on the TM today. I hate the treadmill for anything over 3 miles with a passion. I'm still too big of a ***** to run when it's snowing though, especially when I can't find my beanie.

Weekly Total: 21.47 miles

I am supposed to run today after work... it's been spitting snow on and off. Not sure if I am going to man up or not. Planned on running at the River Walk here in town and the wind off the river might just be too brutal. Going to wait to decide for sure untill a little later.

That was hard. Finished in 5:05. Hip and calf issues killed me the last 6 miles. 25° at the start. It was cold.

Nicely done!

You got this.. man up. My mind was telling me the same thing before I headed out to run today, but I got in 7 miles around campus with a good majority along the river. Once you get moving you will be fine.

My 7 miles was in just over 55 mins.

Well I sucked it up. 3.2 miles. 7:28 pace. Temp was 28 when I finished. There were patches of snow still on the path. Made for an interesting run.

Weekly total 14.2

3.25 easy(ish) tonight. I snacked way too much yesterday, glad I could get out and burn some of it off today.
