The Runner's thread

Got to run outside tonight. I can finally run a mile without stopping. I ran almost 2 without stopping tonight actually.

Finishing 3 miles in under 30 minutes finally. Ran/walked 3 miles in 26:47 tonight. Much more running than walking though.

My goal for Friday is 3 miles in 25 minutes and no walking.

Looks like you are making progress... keep it up. :good!:

Good job. How are you tracking your distance and time?

I run on McFee Rd. It has 2 roundabouts that are exactly 1 mile apart. I park at one, (there's a park there) walk to the other one as my warm up, then I run back, down, and back, finishing at my car.

I time it with my Casio Pathfinder.

If you have a smart phone, download a running GPS app. They show maps of your run and break down speeds during your run, etc. I have found that it keeps me motivated and accountable

I love the Runkeeper app because you can set it to give you updates during your run at your desired intervals. I have mine set for every half mile. Keeps me from slacking from mile to mile and helps me keep a constant pace.

Sdv - non running question. How cold was it Sunday? Golf announcers made it sound like you guys were 2 miles south of the North Pole.

Treadmill today, incline set at 2. 2.5 in 21:23. Best pace for me so far, 08:33. Can't wait to start adding some real speedwork once I get up to 25mpw.

I haven't truly ran on a regular basis since high school football and this last week I've finally put the power lifting bulkiness in my past and have begun running. My playing weight was 174lbs and now I'm about 195-200. I'm about 5ft9 and can bench 350, squat 405x10 and dead 465. Anyways...

I started out lifting like normal and just running intervals for 30 min after weights. First week I got in around 6 miles and couldn't run longer than 5 min before toning it back down to inclined walking. Week two I got in around 15 miles and Friday I actually ran about 30 min straight on speed 6 on the treadmill. I couldn't believe it. I've had surgery on both my knees and have definitely exceeded my frame with muscle, yet am achieving rapid results.

Though I would share! Once the weather gets nice and I am even better at this (and maybe a 8-10% bf 170-175 rather than 195 13-14% bf) I definitely wanna hit some trails and be outside running. I apologize for any stupid typos in advance I'm on my iPhone about to call it a night.

That's great man. I was surprised how much I started to enjoy running once it wasn't a chore or punishment anymore. Be careful adding too much too soon though. Do a little research on building up your base endurance right so that you don't get yourself hurt. Most of all, listen to your body. If you start getting too tired, take a day off, if you're having recurring pains somewhere, get it checked out by a doc, etc..

Most of all, enjoy your new hobby.

Thanks for the tips, I'll definitely keep the above in mind. I've lifted since I was 12 (I'm almost 26 now) and I've learned when to take it easy and when it's just my body being a p*ssy lol. If you are tired and don't rest you usually end up straining something and what should've been a day of rest is now 4 days of forced rest/recovery haha. But I went and got nice running shoes and custom made inserts for my feet, etc. I should be good to go!

By the way, if anyone has experience with maintaining muscular size/strength with moderate distance running, I'd love to hear your story. Several of my body builder friends tell me I'm crazy and I'm going to lose size, etc. Personally I'd love to lose size if it means I get my agility and cardiovascular endurance in great shape. I want to be an athlete again, not a sack of meat. But I'd really like to still be roughly as strong as I currently am.

Just with my personal experience if you want to keep your strength and still do distance running when you lift you will have to do lower reps with heavier weight. Let the distance running do your "cutting". If you are going from not running at all or doing very little cardio at all to distance running you are going to lose some of your size because you will be buring more calories (which you probably already knew), but if done correctly I don't think you should lose much strength. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

I'd definitely make sure you eat enough to offset your calories burned by running. That's all I've got for you though.

3.31 in 32:00 today. Treadmill again, incline at 2. Listened to some podcasts today which made treadmill running exponentially more enjoyable. I think that's the way to go from now on.

Double check that. They are slightly further apart...it's a mile from Bridgemore to the second.

I lift three days and run three days, alternating each day. I am leaner and just as strong as I've ever been. Running hills will beef up those calves and quads.
