The Runner's thread

I'm very fortunate to live within 5 miles of the A.T. & Blue Ridge Parkway plus a total of 100+ miles of trail within 45 minutes or less. Great place if you love the outdoors.

As cyclist, I hate to hear when jerks give us a bad name. Whether I'm running or riding, I try to be courteous to everyone. We are all just trying to have fun. No reason why you can't slow down for a minute when other people are around. It's not the Tour de France & you're not that good anyway. 30 seconds ain't gonna ruin your training, jmo

I have to say, when I rolled my ankle a few weeks ago moving over for some cyclists they stopped, asked if they could help and even offered to let me use one their cellphones to call the house. I'm lucky living in Peachtree City as it is a very cyclist/runner friendly town. We hold quite a few sprint tri's here every year.

Anybody use the podrunner downloads on their iPod? I do, and even though I'm not really a fan of techno it really seems to make a difference in my endurance and ability to maintain pace... I try to run every so often without the tunes just to remind myself that I don't HAVE to have 'em but given a choice, I run with music...

For someone looking to get into cycling what kind of bike would you recommend? I really would like to not spend a ton of money on a bike. I probably would lean more towards a road bike too just for the simple fact that I would have to drive a distance before being able to use a mountain bike on a trail.

I'm new to cycling myself and got a Trek 1.5, it ran me about $1000 after equipping it with a cateye and some speed play pedals. I also spent about another $200 getting the shoes, clothes etc. I'm really happy with it as an intro bike but I imagine I'll want to step up as I get more into it.

Upgrade your components whenever they go on sale then eventually upgrade your frame. You'll end up with a really nice bike for 40-50% less plus the cost will be spread out so the misses won't notice as much.

Good advice! Nothing, however, escapes the notice of my wife.... It's actually a good thing. Left to my own devices, I'd be completely broke. I'd have a lot of really nice stuff, but I'd definitely go broke acquiring all of it....

Looks like I will have to start saving for a bike... I knew they were expensive but dang!

Not running very long distances this week to allow my body to rest up from the training I have been doing to prepare for this half marathon. I am excited to run this half this weekend. My goal is to finish in under 2 hours.

Strange day. We lifted weights instead and did short distance run (2 miles) + warm up, cooldown.

I always run with music every chance I get.

Almost 6 miles yesterday.

So true.

Ran 5 miles yesterday. Was my first long distance run since last year's Knoxville Half-Marathon in April. Wasn't easy at all. I just signed up last week for this year's Half-Marathon in Knoxville. Don't have much time to train so I'm going to really have to turn it up.

Good luck to you. When is the half marathon in Knoxville?
