The Runner's thread

Ran a 5k Saturday morning at Victor Ashe park in Knoxville (was up there visiting my parents) 21:09. I would have busted the 21 min mark but with half mile left I started getting a cramp in my quads so I had to walk about 30-45 seconds. I was so disappointed that I was that close to busting the 21 min mark. Oh well, better luck next time.

It got rough on the last mile and a half because I had to use the bathroom, but new I was making great time.

Hill training tomorrow morning

I hate that feeling!! It's awful when you are making great time and you get that feeling because you don't want to stop and screw your time up and you don't want to piss or shizz on yourself either.

3 miles last night with lots of hills. I am digging the hill training. It sucks while you are doing it but the rewards are worth it.

Any serious older, heavier runners out there….I’m 60 and haven’t ran for over 15 years…

I ran somewhere between 13-17 miles a week in my 40’s although I was a big boy (6’1”, 220 lbs) but stopped due to problems with my knees…

I’m up to 250 and have to do something so I’m going to start running again…any words of advice would be appreciated…

When I started running I was around 230. If you want to get to where you want to run long distances you have to start with your diet. Yes, running can help you lose weight, but watching calories, late night cards, and being careful about what you eat is VERY VERY important.

Also, when you start running set goals. Have a deadline for the goals. A good way to do this is something like enter a 5K with a time set in mind.

Couch to 5K is a good program as well to help people with running.

I just jumped into my 40s and am 6'3" 220. I run about 25 miles per week, but am careful about the type of shoes I'm in and generally keep the pace fairly slow to avoid pounding on my feet and ankles. I've had to adjust my stride shorter over time to limit pounding as well, but I can still get after it on the uphill portions of my runs and can still do some decent times one of my days weekly.

I have started treadmill running about every third run because it is so much better on my body, but it isn't the same kind of workout.

Starting out, I would consider a treadmill with slight incline and then progress to the road.

Just because you are 60 and haven't ran in a long time doesn't mean that you can't start back. You will have to be careful with what you do. Make sure that you stretch before and after runs really well to help prevent injuries. When you go to buy shoes go to a running store that can help you pick a pair of shoes that are right for you. Also when you pick your shoes you may have to spend a little more to get a pair that is right for you. Don't skimp on shoes they are way too important to skimp on. Like others have said, set goals and a dead line for those goals. Don't worry about your time that you run either just make sure you finish your distances that you set out for. Finishing your distances is all that matters. The time will or can improve but is not important. Good luck and I hope you get into running again because it can be very rewarding.

Traveling preacher named Jerrie Barber is 65 and runs all the time. (Barefoot) He is pretty intense. He has some great incite on running.

you can google "barber clippings" and find him

Getting back to the streets after the summer heat. 6 good miles tonight with the beast of my hill climb back home. Legs on fire.

Haven't ran in about a year and a half. Got out of shape fast. Finally started back up Monday. I've ran 3 nights straight for 1 mile. Surprised I've been able to do it without having to take a break. Hoping to lose the garbage weight I've gained since the break.

Good luck sir!

Four miles last night with lots of hills. I am hating the hills during the runs but loving the feeling afterwards. Plus I can tell a difference when I take the hills out of the runs.

Good luck Sith. Keep at it

4 more miles last night and the weather was perfect. Little breeze blowing and cooler temp made for a nice run. 7:26 pace. Little slower than I want to be but I enjoyed my run last night and that's all that matters.

Super uncool alert question: anyone have a jogging stroller that they take their kids running with them? I just bought one tonight and wanted to see if anyone else ran with one

Finally ran for the first real time in weeks, maybe months. Got some new shoes: nike lunarglide 4s (neon green). Feel great. Probably did 4 miles in 25 minutes. Perfect weather in the mornings and evenings.

Never bought one but did borrow one from my sister in law. Jogging with a stroller is harder than you think. Good luck SDV
