The Official Rick Barnes discussion thread

Absolutely. You also can’t go 17 of 25 on FT’s either. Allowed way too many points in the paint for KY to shoot 50% for the game. Did a pretty good job defending the 3 allowing only 5 for 19. However we made a huge mistake leaving their one really dangerous 3 pt shooter wide open on that late 3. His defender left to help inside and shouldn’t have. In that situation, you have to deny that guy the ball.
Yeah you have to shadow their best 3 point shooter down stretch in a close game . Got to deny him the ball to begin with

Correct me if I’m wrong but Barnes has had a Top 15 offense one time at Tennessee. That also happened to be the team that had a “post” player that could operate with his back to the basket and could score it almost every time you needed it. From my recollection, that’s really the only post guy he has had an offensive game and could operate offensively on his own in the paint.

Watching all these other teams that just dump it down in the paint and let their posts go to work really aggravates me knowing we just haven’t had that at all.

It's amazing how the expectations for our program have changed. Suddenly 20 wins by early February and a likely 2-seed in the tournament, just isn't enough anymore. I remember way too many seasons in my lifetime that I'd love to be where we sit right now.
Yeah I remember those seasons too, the bubble watch do we or do we not get in days. This team has played so well a few times they could have won the NC game. However, this team has played so badly like losing to Ky twice that it would have been knocked out of the tourney in the first game and not made it to the NC game. Coach cannot shoot free throws for his guys they guys have to do that.

I'm not hoping for a Rick Barnes dismissal, but I'm pretty confident in whoever our AD replaces him with.
That’s always the issue we’ve struggled with. If you’re not winning it all, then there is someone out there who is better in some way. The crux of it is that we can’t trust that we’ll find that needle in the haystack.

I’m fine with staying loyal to Barnes and his staff as long as the Vols have real promise to make it to the Sweet 16 every year.

The expectations from everyone are surely the same: Do not regress.

All the various opinions you’ll find are personal theories on how to avoid regression. Sure, some may believe we can win it all in the near future. But every one of us is more terrified of the program falling back to obscurity.

Whether the theory is to ride Barnes’s success for as long as humanly possible or replace him while UT is a lofty coaching job, the goal is the same. We all understand that nothing lasts, so are you too patient, too impatient? Opportunistic or foolish? Who knows.. Whatever happens must be done right to continue what Barnes has built.

If you capable of going deep into the tournament year in and out eventually the odds go up that you will win it all. This team will have to shoot, pass and hit free throws better. The bigs have to learn to finish better inside. But Barnes is a very good coach and there is no doubt about that! I am glad he is at Tennessee! GBO

IMO, we have all the elements in place to make the FF this year.
Barnes has the almost impossible task of motivating the players
to perform to their potential at the same time.

JG, JP, and Ament playing together to their potential can carry this
team to FF but they have shown recently that is very unlikely.

With some tweaks of the system and a handful of
Recruiting is on fire, Caldwell will have Tennessee competing for championships in the very near future.
With some tweaks of the system and two or three coaches retiring or going to the WNBA it could happen. We are miles from the top programs in the country

-Gillespie, ament, Henderson and Boswell have shown they can shoot fine.
-it’s hard to know at times if shooting in HS and other events will translate, for bad example Eli Ellis for SC. Totally different ballgame in getting open and a shot off and often needs tweeking at the next level. Couple portal shooters are always welcome.
-what imo we need more of is 1 or 2 more players who can take their man and score or draw the defense to take the pressure off of Gillespie and Ament where defense is ready to help.
-we have had more shots around the rim this year than I recall in awhile, as expected, but didn’t expect so many misses. There’s nothing wrong with an offense of Barnes or any coach when you are getting dunks, layups and shots within 5 feet
-on ball defense is down this year, again expected, turnovers, fts and scoring droughts where we miss a lot of close ones have hurt this team.
