The Official Rick Barnes discussion thread

One thing that could help Bring Back Barnes is the positive impact that he’s having on young men’s lives. If that’s his calling in life then he’s in a great spot.

He seems to be more active on the sidelines this year than other years in my opinion. Either he knows this is his last legit chance to make a title run or he has caught a second wind and wants to run it for a few more years.

It's hard to see why any coach who is a bit older and financially secure would want to continue and have to deal with NIL/portal bull crap.
I get the feeling Barnes trusts his assistants. They actively recruit and evaluate the players, and he comes in to close the deal. They evaluate during the season to be ready for the portal. They can also recruit some of the top ones because of their proven record of development. Barnes understands what is important, and he doesn’t live basketball. It’s what also makes his run pretty incredible. He holds everyone accountable.

What parent wouldn’t want their son playing for Coach Barnes and his program?

Seriously, he wins a lot, he has put numerous players in the league, you never hear about his players with off-court issues, and the entire program just exudes class.

I’m proud as hell of our basketball program under Coach Barnes.

I never disagreed with that.

I do not recall making a GOAT coach choice in here or really anywhere else except talk about Coach Summitt and Gen. Neyland.

I just want to win it all and I will take Coach Barnes all day.

I still think we should have lost 3 total games. I do not think we had 6 games this year where its just not a good night and I know that those nights do happen. I watched some sports in the last 50 myself.
You stated I was a fan of "coaches" rather than team. Wanting the best coach we've ever had to stick around a few more years is being a fan of the team. He puts us in the best position year after year, consistently, more so than any coach before him.

It's pretty noticeable the number of high level athletes have steered their offspring to Barnes

Parents who have unrealistic expectations of how developed their kids are coming out of high school. Some expect their kids to get 35 minutes every night are are unhappy if a coach makes them earn PT with good team ball and sound defense.

I’d say only about one in three kids/parents connect with Barnes message. You’ll rarely see us neck and neck for a kid considering Bruce or other coach of his ilk. Cardwell was an exception. We were close to getting him. Most parents manage their kid’s career like an investment. They listen to coaches in terms of return on investment. Barnes addresses kids as young men who need structure, discipline (and hislordandsaviorandso on) to thrive. Our advantage is that Rick is one of one. If you connect with him, there aren’t many similar options. Barnes always says the recruit he’s most likely to sign is one where the mother is in charge. It’s a funny statement, but pretty grounded in truth. We miss on certain kids because we aren’t a fit, but end up with guys like Grant, ZZ, Mashack, JJJ etc that end up being pillars in the Tennessee brand.

I think he probably gets replaced then, but as you said, lots of unknown context.

I'll also add that a 9-seed probably means we finished with double-digit losses, probably something like a 19-12 record. Losing in the 1st round of the NCAAT won't help ease that sting, obviously. And it will be tough to think that the program will have developed any sort of stability in the recruiting process of most kids with a lame duck coach, so it isn't likely that there will reinforcements on the way. Probably look a lot like UVA this year with a little more success.

Now, if he manages 20 wins and an NCAAT berth after seeing his roster gutted and pulls together a group of guys that on paper had no business being above .500, then maybe we are having a different conversation. But that's the context we don't know, right now.
Consensus is that White has made it clear that Rick can remain on staff, get a retired suit, have the world’s biggest send off etc, but he isn’t picking his successor.

Tennessee basketball has never been on more solid ground. I hope coach Barnes stays around as long as he wants, I think he loves it here. I hope he stays as long as he wants to coach. I do think this is his last stop, but I think he has another 4-5 years in him hopefully he feels the same. He is safe on the Tennessee end of this, any fan that has a problem with Barnes can go kick rocks as far as I am concerned. GBO!!!!

Oh, let me be clear now. IDGAF...this coach has had 15 +/- years.to figure it out. He has YET to do it. I am DONE with he azz after this year, personally, assuming what I believe will happen in the NCAA. How F'ing sad is it you could have gone all the way....if you would have gotten out of your own stupid ways.
We said Tennessee not Hennessy.

Or what?

He’s been to at least the SS in 3 of the last 5 NCAAT’s with one being an EE.

We are 24-6 this year. Just you wait until we have a coach that goes 15-15. I can’t believe the fans who don’t enjoy seasons like this. Frankly, that’s the embarrassment.

We just have to save our collective breaths over lost causes like this.

I remember the seasons of .500 or worse, fighting to just make the NIT, playing on the first night of the SEC Tournament (and losing), no NBA players, etc. And there were a lot of those seasons!

I agree, but also Barnes has gone 2 for 2 the past 2 seasons on "cornerstone" players in the portal....
