The Official Rick Barnes discussion thread

I would put Beard in the same caliber at Barnes. If we were to go from Rick Barnes to Chris Beard, I would find it very bewildering that a “majority” of fans would have issues with that transition.

I know Beard has baggage and it can’t be blindly dismissed….

But there is no denying his ability to build programs and coach the game. He would be one of the best “potentially available” options out there.

I just want wins. But the next coach might not be able to get the defensive effort anywhere close to what Barnes gets.

I like chess matches over track meets. But you have to go with what will bring the best athletes to the program. The concept of keeping players for 4 years while teaching defense are winding down.

It seems like shortly after Barnes arrived at UT he went and spent some time with Paul Westhead. I thought that that suggested he’d go with a fast pace. Maybe it was to learn how to best defend that style.

TN’s best eras have been defenses first. Mears transitioned into a run and gun style once he had Ernie and Bernie though. His offensive philosophy was efficiency. He wanted a very high percentage of scores with every offensive possession.

Devoe was defensive minded. Bruce used his defense to generate scoring opportunities. But then KO over emphasized defense to a fault. I think that Jerry just rolled the ball out there and whatever happened was the result.
Agree on everything you said, except I'm not sure yet about the trend on 4-year players. Haven't we seen the tournament recently being dominated by mature teams, more so than the Kentucky Wonders one-and-done cornucopias of NBA-bound talent?

The old axiom that "defense travels" still seems to hold true. And today's help-defenses get quickly exploited if there's a weak link, which negates the idea of a hybrid team of matures + a young, offensive phenom.

And as a related aside, the NBA game has become boring as heck, so a college product that embraces a different approach should be able to dominate the viewership market. If young guys who can play the NBA style are diverted into NBA developmental leagues, that may leave the college game with just the pool of players it wants.

Well, those are some thoughts on the subject. Open for debate.

With more major openings getting announced every few hours (now Villanova) we better hope Barnes stays another year

Yep. You do not want to be fighting elite programs like IU and Nova for a coach. You won’t win.

I think there is a very good chance Felix develops some offensive game. If he can tighten up that little baby hook and develop a shot around the rim (like Nkamhou did), to go with what he already has, he’d be a very good player next year.
I dont think in Barnes tenure anyone has ever developed an offensive game... it not what he does.... other way around.

This is idiotic. Zeigler, Mashack, Grant Williams, Schofield, Bowden, Lamonte, Kevin Punter, Aidoo, JJJ, and many more improved offensively under Barnes.

If you don’t think so, you simply don’t know basketball. And you’re hard up to criticize a great coach, so you make absurd statements.

He objectively teaches the high release for bigs to avoid having their shot blocked
I am not knocking Barnes (I am 100% i nthe CRB fanboy club) just saying developing an offensive game is not a thing that normally happens here. Guys develop defensively the guys that have improved offensively came in as offensive guys. DK and Lanier didn't 'develop' offensively in this system neither did Grant....they all developed defensively. WIll/have guys incrementally improve over time? Of course, in any decent program they will.

It's like saying I'm going to a camp hosted by Mugsy Bogues to learn how to dunk. I probably won't get optimal results there.

This is so factually inaccurate. Numerous examples of him Improving the offensive game of players.
name a few? I'll wait. Have players improved overall under CRB of course he is a great coach and has a great program. But offense is not his specialty. I hate how folks get all up in arms when the truth is told even if its not negative perse. He is not gonna stagnate some ones development...but you come to UT to play/learn defense under CRB. In this system offense is a byproduct of good D.

What you are saying is what silly. I am not saying players don't get better. but none of those guys were offensive juggernauts.... name one that was? All of those guys came in as scorers and outside of Grant none of them were the leading scorer for UT ever...all of Barnes top scorers outside of grant were inherited, one and done and/or transfers.

ZZ his uptick in scoring tracks directly with his increase in minutes each year.. He has improved by about 1-2 points each year...his minutes per game has increased by about 3 mins a year also.. if he cant get you and extra 2 points in 3 minutes whats he doing? He started at 9 a game in 22 mins peaking now at 14 a game in 34. SO in 12 minutes 5 points.... OMFG what development.
Mashack are you kidding me?
Schofeild.. same as ZZhe came in a scorer and increase in experience and minutes tracks.
JJJ got better each year because played more games lol so if him being injured less is counted as development then sure.
Santi by most peoples opinions regressed.
AIdoo got more minutes so of course more points.
same with them all. their rate of scoring did not change drastically.

Name one guy that came in as a non-scorer and developed into one? you cant because that's not this system its not a knock on Barnes its reality.
Every player that comes and sticks to this system will improve. They will improve a lot less on offense here than they would almost anywhere else because that's not the focus.

Outside of DK and Lanier (transfers), there has been no scorer perse in the CRB era outside of the one and dones and Grant. our leading scorer most years under him has put up 12-14 points a game.

Even funnier if you go by the things I put down. transfer, one and done, grant Williams. Only one player has lead this team in scoring and averaged over 14 points a game and falls outside of that. Kevin Punter a senior CRB's first year.

Grant Williams IS THE EXCEPTION OT THE RULE WHICH AYS ITS WAS MOSTLY HIM NOT THE SYSTEM. If you equate someone playing more minutes and having their scoring increase in direct proportion to their extra minutes.. I am dead wrong. But that would mean you don't understand math either. OF course if I play more minutes I am gonna score more points. ZZ improved
