The Official Rick Barnes discussion thread

So let excuses we hear every F'ing year....EVERY YEAR
Bro, the year isn't even over. He could still run the table for all we know.
I'm about results in March as much as the next guy but let the season play out.
This lost hurts but it was more on the players than the coach tonight. Could have just been tired from that Alabama game. They lost tonight too, btw. The refs also sucked @ss .

Or what?

He’s been to at least the SS in 3 of the last 5 NCAAT’s with one being an EE.

We are 24-6 this year. Just you wait until we have a coach that goes 15-15. I can’t believe the fans who don’t enjoy seasons like this. Frankly, that’s the embarrassment.
The basic difference (not that there are only 2 positions) is that some like where we are and don't mind if the peak has been reached basically for years to come if ever for various reasons. Others expect to gain more with the players and coaches that are here now.

Let each side do what it likes.

I'm disappointed tonight but Rick did his best job. He is not the problem, It's hard to win at Tennessee and he has won a lot. I'm honestly surprised at how hard we fought despite this being their senior day

He actually achieves...or on occasion, over achieves. Respect. Like others, he has been his own worst enemy.
Pearl has only been out of the first weekend 1 time in 14 years.
Ironically, if Rick Barnes gets to a final 4 this year and Pearl didn't, Rick would have a better post season record than Pearl in the last 10 years.

People think THIS loss, TONIGHT prompted this. Tonight's loss is just another data point...one game, on one day. Barnes has literally decades of history/results. I'm at the point NOW, where it's just repetitive. And I've watched since he came over from Texas. Especially the past 3-4 years. Come March one needs to RISE to the occasion...not be holding in for dear life because your style DOES NOT work come crunch time.

If that's the case, the tournament has even started, so it makes no sense that you'd choose tonight to rage.

And I hope he does...history and what I've watched over the years in March says...don't bet good money and do not hold your breath.

I'd have to say the same thing for Pearl, then.
History says he can't get to a Natty.
Yes, Rick didn't get the final 4 last year, but he was literally a play or two away. Not to mention Pearl got bounced first game last year with almost the same talent.
It's hard to get to final 4 and above, dude.

He got the final 4, but the last 10 years Barnes has gotten to the second weekend more. Pearl for there once. So, other than the final 4 year, seems like he has h y underachieved a bit. Seem to remember a first round tourney loss to an Ivy League school last year. Barnes has made a final 4, just not here. What had Pearl achieved that Barnes hasn’t?

Yes it's hard. Yet a number of coaches were considered "dangerous" enough in their TIME to achieve great success even if they lost a final, or final 4, or even 8. Because you have to get there first. Izzo at MSU was a great danger for years, every year. Self at Kansas/NC, coach K at Duke, NC coaches in their day, UCONN recently and in the past. There's a recipe associated with that success...the results tell us that. They all knocked on the door and went through, several more than once, some regularly. So...why?

Im not the one who is “sick of excuses”.You don’t have to read them. You said to count you out. Why do you keep posting here? Order that Auburn shirt and get on with it.
Then don't reply.....as for the shirt comment, wow, just wow.

Kansas, North Carolina, Duke are all blue bloods. Naturally they attract talent.
IZZO and Hurley are really exception in that regard.
It's been hard to attract the talent to Tennessee. We're a football school.
Same for Texas when Barnes coached there.
If Barnes would have had the talent that has been through Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, Kentucky......he'd probably have a Natty, too.
At schools like Tennessee and places like, say Gonzaga, it takes time because you building from scratch. We are building nicely man. We are a 'New Blood' now and we have Pearl and Barnes to thank for it.

If we're "new blood" then yeah Pearl and Barnes are huge contributors. Those other programs may have the same contributors. Then maybe the time is near to find a closer. I hoped Barnes was it being so close during any given year. IMO he just can't get out of his own way. 😐

You guys who want to discuss Barnes, Barnes retiring, Barnes record in March, etc. etc., please do so in this thread so we can keep the game threads focused on... the game.

Rick Barnes is a good coach overall and I’m grateful for him. I’m not hoping he’ll retire since I know he’s better than most CBB coaches out there.

But with that being said, he is sort of like a Mark Richt- a good man whose teams are typically good to very good but fall apart in some crucial big games. The NCAA Tournament history is too much to ignore. He hasn’t been getting knocked out really early lately like Calipari towards the end though, so it could be worse there.

Barnes is plenty successful enough to hang it up when he decides to retire. He has built a nice culture of winning here, especially in regards to what we were as a basketball program before he came. When he decides to hang it up, then we hope Danny White hits a home run hire and we build off the winning reputation Barnes has delivered here.

This probably happnes in the real near future (Barnes retiring). Until then, we enjoy seasons like this one where we are without doubt one of the top 8 teams in college basketball. A team with a REAL chance of making it to a final four, and from there anything can happen.

I'm telling you dude, firing Barnes abruptly will do absolutely nothing but set us back.
