The Official Rick Barnes discussion thread

That settles it then. we will most likely never have such a great coach that we can win it all in the very lengthy future.

Thus, all are commanded to love rb above winning it all because he is the best we can ever hope for because we just don't have the power to win as well after he retires unless we somehow get lucky in the next 50 or so years.

Fall in line and follow the 9 of 10 and their dictates. Let them be happy in their love of something above UT winning it all and their confidence that they will be more likely correct given their standards are not so high.

Or, let the losers be losers and let's go for it all now, next year, the year after, and so on. In all UT sports.

It's just beyond stupid to seemingly want CRB to move on when our program is likely in the best position EVER to win it all. Vegas odds say there are only 4 teams with better odds than us to win it all.

So, don't get it twisted when you or any other poster gets blowback for making what equates to simple-minded, Ricky Bobby inspired posts to chastise the rest of us for settling ("if you ain't 1st, you're last") as you try to stir up support for the fool's errand of finding another coach to "win it all". My hope is that this is just the weakest attempt to troll in the history of trolling (if not, I suggest you stay away from sharp objects).

Thanks Freak.
I'll start with my two cents...
I absolutely love CRB and what he's done for Tennessee, but the bill of goods we bought from Texas has proven true.

Great recruiter, good coach, teams excel during the season, doesn't go very deep in the tournaments.

Do we accept that and let him coach here as long as he maintains the current standard?
Or is it time to consider the next coach?
Let him coach, when we play our a game we are as good as any team in the country, but unfortunately we don't bring our a game very often. I don't know any coach who would be available I had rather have than Barnes

Wow, I didn't think this even needed a thread. I mean I'm fine with it being one, I just didn't think that many people are unsatisfied in respect.
I know there have been a few far outters that would like to see Barnes go, but I'd like to think any sensible Tennessee Basketball fan knows we're lucky to have him.
He may or may not be able to get over the hump in March, but he consistently gets us there with a real chance at winning, too. Once a team gets to the tourney they always has a chance to get hot from there.
I honestly feel we got hosed in that Purdue game last year with Edey getting away with all the fouls. IMO it was egregious. We win that game and we in final four where anything can happen.
That all said, I also don't see or have a problem with criticizing Barnes as a coach.
It just kinds comes with the territory of being a head coach, but as far as where he has this team, I'm completely satisfied.
Would have been more satisfied beating those blue b@stards tonight, tho. 🫤

We got hosed worse against Purdue when Grant and Admiral were here. That team probably makes our first F4 if that awful call on Turner doesn't get made....in addition to multiple others.

How’s that worked out at the other UT. They are on their third coach since they brilliantly pushed out Coach Barnes and likely moving to the fourth after this season.

In my opinion, this has been the best coaching job of Barnes yet. I personally don't think this team has enough solid players to be a top 10 squad (we have solid players, just not depth).

Despite this, they have spent 5 weeks as a #1 ranked team and are in the running for a 1 seed. On paper, this team should be a 3 or 4 seed.

The players and coaching staff are overachieving with grit, fight, and great half time adjustments.

I love Barnes. I enjoy him but his teams are very frustrating. I hate seeing Bama scoring 90+ on almost everybody and winning like crazy. Meanwhile we struggle to score 75. While there is no guarantee that a successor would match his success, with Danny White, the confidence and likelihood of that happening are high.

Offense wins championships. And having the 185th scoring team in the nation is not good.
How’d that work out for Bama?

The recent halftime adjustments might be the progression to a more consistent offense. However, dry periods which will happen are always not fun.

We have a very good defense, 4th on teamrankings for instance. Duke may have some tougher opponents, but none of the top 3 have played a schedule like UT.

Regardless, I say our offense can become just as consistent and good. Maybe this is the beginning.

Are you saying Duke is going to be playing tougher opponents after they get into the NCAA? I ask because the ACC is a joke this year

well we've never been to the final four before
College Basketball is unlike any other sport with a lengthy schedule as to winning the National Championship. Advancing in a one and done is difficult because on the dependency of matchups and luck. Even if UT were to get beat early won't diminish Barnes' as best ever at UT for men's basketball

I respectfully disagree that BB is the toughest. I would have to give that distinction to college baseball but BB would be a close 2nd.

College baseball is a double elimination tournament from start to finish. It's certainly difficult, but not like a one and done crapshoot, which is the NCAA basketball tournament

It is obvious that Duke will play tougher opponents in the tournament than they have in the ACC. What I was pointing out is that looking at the teamrankings list, Duke is the closest to UT in toughest schedule of those ranked higher, but of those top teams, UT has the toughest schedule.

Someone said winning a natty in football is equivalent to just making the final four.

Duke's non-conference schedule was way better than ours, and included Auburn, Arizona, Kentucky, Illinois, and Kansas. Nobody will argue the ACC is down this year, but to say Duke hasn't played anyone tough is not true.

I know they had a pretty tough non conference schedule. I was speaking solely of their ACC schedule

I'm not sure he would admit it (he still has deep ties to Texas, loved his time there) but parting ways was the best thing that could have happened to Rick. Things were probably stale at Texas and a fresh start seemed to rejuvenate him.

If Barnes leaves, with DW's history of wanting to hire young up and upcoming coaches, see Kim Caldwell, thats who his replacement will probably be and that will piss off a lot of you because your going to want him hire an experience championship type coach. Be careful what you wish for.
