The Official Rick Barnes discussion thread

Totally disagree about Barnes being a great recruiter. I think he is a great coach and an average recruiter. I love Barnes. But it’s becoming apparent that his offensive style is not gonna get it done. That’s not a knock on him. It’s just a Father Time thing.
Barnes has brought in some great players. His handful of 5 stars have mostly come here because their high level athletic parents have steered them here solely because of Barnes.

We need a new offensive system. The Barnes defensive ball system is not working. In today’s college basketball offense wins just like in football. And Barnes needs to step his HS recruiting game up.
As always, you have no idea what you’re talking about.

Do you really consider getting a small handful of 5* makes you a great recruiter? I think he does really good in the portal. But his HS recruiting isn’t very good. Look at the ranking of the 2025 class.

I don't think you can say it's not working. It's effective, but it's also limited and matchup sensitive, but can't almost every team say that to one degree or another? I'm content to let the season play out before judging. Regardless, I've seen a heckuva lot worse in Knoxville since Mears roamed the sidelines. No guarantees that Barnes successor will equal his success. I'm gonna enjoy who and what we are right now.

I love Barnes. I enjoy him but his teams are very frustrating. I hate seeing Bama scoring 90+ on almost everybody and winning like crazy. Meanwhile we struggle to score 75. While there is no guarantee that a successor would match his success, with Danny White, the confidence and likelihood of that happening are high.

Offense wins championships. And having the 185th scoring team in the nation is not good.

“Offense wins championships” is not accurate.

Every champion since 2002 has been a combination of these attributes. Last year, entering the tournament, we were one of only ten teams to meet this criteria:
  • Top 25 in adj. efficiency margin (AKA KenPom ranking)
  • Top 57 in adj. offensive efficiency
  • Top 44 in adj. defensive efficiency
  • Top 54 in Strength of Schedule Adj. Efficiency Margin

Chances are a team with this profile will win again.

Alabama making the FF did so with one of the worst defensive teams, but an excellent offense. They are the exception, not the rule. They also didn’t win the championship.

So what team that ranks 185th in scoring wins championships? I see you use kenpom for everything. lol.

I almost have to think he wouldn't mind seeing Cade and Estrella develop together. They could be a lethal inside presence. Of course I'm speculating here. We have a real shot at the stud PG. If Barnes sticks around for a few more years, he'll get good players here. Always has
Do you think we're in the "it could be any year" stage, or do you think it's a given that he'll be here for the next couple seasons at least?

A great recruiter can find 4 and even a few 3 stars that are able to be developed to compete at the highest level. That's a textbook definition of a great recruiter. We've been nationally relevant for most of the time he has been here. Why? He gets good players, some great and develops them

Cool. What championship has he won? Also have you seen their schedule? Oh and ST John’s is 80th in the nation in scoring. We are 185th. Try again.
Here’s a list of championships won by Rick Pitino. Don’t stay up too late reading it.

Championships

That settles it then. we will most likely never have such a great coach that we can win it all in the very lengthy future.

Thus, all are commanded to love rb above winning it all because he is the best we can ever hope for because we just don't have the power to win as well after he retires unless we somehow get lucky in the next 50 or so years.

Fall in line and follow the 9 of 10 and their dictates. Let them be happy in their love of something above UT winning it all and their confidence that they will be more likely correct given their standards are not so high.

Or, let the losers be losers and let's go for it all now, next year, the year after, and so on. In all UT sports.

He doesn’t understand KenPom. Only uses volume stats. Not worth it.

Precisely how long are you giving the next coach before he has to have a final four or he's out the door?
What about a Natty?

What's a better offensive team?

One that scores 1.2 points per possession (60 possessions) or one that scores 1.0 points per possession (75 possesions)....

So how realisticly close are we to Barnes actually retiring? I know the word is that he only wants to coach if his teams can legitimately compete, but I'm just having a hard time imagining him retiring after this season, regardless of what happens. Let's say hypothetically in a worst case scenario that we wind up finishing in the middle 3rd of the SEC and don't make it out of the NCAA opening weekend - what do we think Barnes will do in that case? Imho, something like that would have to happen for Barnes to seriously consider it. Would a big transfer or surprise commit possibly change things? Of course, I may be way off base here.

My sincere belief is that this team was constructed as a last hurrah, a do-or-die run at a Final Four or beyond - imagine how much better the offense could be with Carr and Estrella in the rotation. This is Barnes' tenth year, he's already established himself as the best all-time UT men's hoops coach after Mears (and a FF or beyond probably puts him over the top), he's 70, and reading between the lines on some of his statements, it's fairly obvious that the NIL era doesn't appeal to him in the slightest. He's old school, he wants develop players, not buy them. I think he's out after this year regardless of how we finish. And I personally am not ruling him out of a FF run this year. Sometimes teams get scorching hot in March. Last year it was UConn. Doesn't it eventually have to happen to us?

Can you imagine anyone saying Heupel's system doesn't work if he was #1 in the polls for 5 weeks?
Honestly, some of you people obviously weren't around when UT basketball was a wasteland.
