So what happens when unskilled labor is making the minimum wage at $15/hour and skilled labor is just making slightly over?
It's really an argument against the minimum wage. They say that the minimum wage causes these people to be unemployed. Otherwise, the could find some paying jobs, commensurate to their abilities.
Haven't read, but nope. Can't minimize people. If they can do the job they deserve fair pay.
The Federal minimum wage hasn't been rainsed since Jan 2009. Several states have raised the minimum wage to over $8 or $9 per hour. What'sw wrong with raising it by July to no less than $9.50 or $10 per hour. Know that by 2019 or 2020 California and New York are raising it to $12 or $13 or maybe $14 per hour. These are some of the states where the cost of living is high. The states are Hawaii, Massachusetts, New York.
I know raising the wages will increase cost. How much effect will it have on job losses. Fast food workers want $15 per hour. BS. Don't deserve it!
Not knocking you but you bring up some good points. Why not $15? Or would $16.73 work better? How about $50 or $60. Why not $1000? Wouldn't that make everyone rich? Labor is a commodity that has a market value that is determined by the free market. The government setting a minimum wage distorts the market by decreasing the amount of labor and increasing barriers to market entry. If you're for minimum wage you are saying that two consenting parties are not free to provide a service at any price they agree.

They are paid a prorated share. We have a facility for IDD people here and they had a recycling sorting facility here that provided jobs for them. They sorted the items by hand. They would have non IDD people sort and compared that to IDD people doing the same work. If a "regular" person did 10 units of work and the IDD person did 7, they paid them 70% of the prevailing wage.
The Feds shut the recylcing down because they said it isn't good for IDD people to be working like this, they need jobs out in the community. So instead of having jobs that give them purpose and money in their pocket, they are unemployed. They could walk 25 feet to work, now they have to figure out how to ride the bus or find someone to take them. And when it comes down to it if you have to pay two people the same wage but one does 30% less work, who are you going to pick?
Raising the minimum wage isn't going to help those who earn it. Most all union contracts have automatic escalators tied to the minimum wage, so almost everything we buy goes up right along with it.
Nike and clothing designers have their products made paying slave labor wages. They price them as though they paid union wages.Greed. Still plenty of profit while raising people out of poverty. There should be a global minimum wage. Poor people can't afford to buy the exports of other countries.

Slave wages is a contradiction in terms and furthermore, people working in overseas Nike factories are doing so because that is the best option they have. Unfortunately, western do- gooders want to take that option away because it doesn't live up to their idea of equity.
What some don't understand is that life in these third world countries is a miserable existence rife with hunger, disease, crime and an early death. Nike affords them the opportunity to put food on their table consistently and avoid other occupations such as childhood prostitution. Well meaning but naive westerners would end this.
Also, complaining that greed exists is like complaining about rain or oxygen.
