The Golf Thread

Shot an 85 at Forrest Crossing yesterday. The rain held us off for about 30 mins at the turn, just enough time to get stiff. At least that's my excuse for the bad score on the back 9.

:)

Golf rules can be crazy. Penalties for a ball moving in the wind, though the golfer has nothing to do with it.
Then I see stricker flail one, but he gets to go to the other side of the green for a free drop, and has more green and less trouble to get up and down.

. . . and Keegan Bradley does the post round interview like a NASCAR driver. I think I actually heard Faldo sigh when he credited the Srixon Z Star for the victory.

thanks...I think I would like gas better, since I wouldn't have to buy batteries or worry about charging
but I'm just going to start looking around...

I ask the couple I bought my house from to convey their golf cart, and that didn't go over well

Most clubs won't let you have gas carts. In fact, they're pretty rare as it is now

Would it be smarter to buy a cheap set of clubs/bag since I'm just beginning to learn how to play & then as I get better work my way up to better clubs?

A guy is offering me a set of Cobra golf clubs & the bag for $65. He said he paid $250 for them when he first got them.

Sounds like a good deal even if they are older clubs. Cobra makes quality clubs, that's what most of my set consists of.

anything that is a neutral set works on the front end, especially at 65. hit enough balls to get fitted and then spend a little money getting something that better fits your setup.

bpv, I axed about your background in golf a few pages back.
Just curious if you used to play pro, amateur or are just good and knowledgable.

For me, I thought hand/eye coordination would get me to where I want, which is @ a 4 handicap. Foolish.
Now I'm in search for club fitting and a series of lessons to get me there, though all my mistakes may not be fixable, especially the mental ones.

I play and taught. Carried a strong handicap for a few years. Took the PAT and strongly considered a teaching career. Love teaching, but couldn't handle the apprenticeship track.

I close my right shoulder on the down swing and pull the ball left a lot. Any drills you recommend to prevent that?

Similar to coaching. Lots of people love to teach and coach and are good or could be, but do something else due to a variety of reasons, including measuring the value of time spent starting low and moving up.

Yeah . . . Take a bunch of swings and don't do that shoulder thing.

You didn't ask me, but I do the same thing. Just a matter of being quick at the top for me. I have to go to the range and hit balls almost pausing at the top of my swing to feel the club "load" before starting the downswing. It's just a mechanism to make my hips start first instead of my shoulders.

Nice. If you can verify the problem, you can fix the problem yourself and you'll own it.

Agree. . . . Asst Pros are poor as dirt a lot of times.

I still don't know what you guys mean by "load".
My game has taken off lately by simply keeping my right elbow behind my hip on the downswing. It seems to force me to use my legs/hips, keeps it tight, keeps me from casting or coming across the ball. I just have to keep positive and trust it. I tend to go army and try to place shots at the wrong time.

Load is about getting fully on the right side or letting the club fall on the left thumb with gravity. As pressure mounts, people get in a hurry and don't get all the way back.

Loading the shaft is different. It means flexing the shaft to the point it was intended so itcan unload stored energy at release point.

you're inadvertently doing exactly what I said . . . Starting down with you hips and staying behind the ball.

Think of "loading" like pulling the hammer back on a gun. You wouldn't pull the hammer back halfway then pull the trigger. All you're doing with your backswing is feeling your weight on your right side and getting in a position to swing down efficiently.

I was told to practice swinging with just my left arm and really hold that right shoulder back. Thoughts?

I think . . . You shouldn't think that much. :) . I hate bandaid stuff like that. Think about the things you should be doing instead of the thing that's causing the ball to go left.

Think about good tempo and staying behind the ball rather than not doing this or that.
