Tennessee Vols Basketball Recruiting

Imagine going from playing for Chattanooga to Gonzaga - talk about a culture change!

Eh, Spokane is fairly indistinguishable from Chattanooga in terms of culture and Gonzaga itself is going to be smaller than but not grossly different from UTC. It's not like the kid's transferring from Bob Jones to Reed.

How is saying this writing him off? All I said was he was a role player last year, lol. As it stands right now he is our only true PG if we don't add another and will play 30+ mpg. I was just talking about last year.

Because you responded to my post saying he would NEVER be more than a role player...which I found ridiculous

Nobody said it meant they’re not talented. Every player on a team has a role. By your definition, the term is meaningless. What would you call a player who plays significant minutes and isn’t a “role player”

You can google whatever you like, but I've never heard anyone who knows anything about basketball say a guy is either a "star" or a "role player." There are a hundred additional options with the most prominent being: starter. The most basic breakdown of a basketball team is you have 1-2 stars. Another 3-5 guys you label as starters, and then you get to role players. Your role players are the guy you only put in to press. Or the guy you put in to hit free throws. Or your defensive specialist. Or the guy you put in to foul the shi7 out of some a-hole. Regardless, a role player is a 1 or maybe 2 dimensional player that you use for a very specific "role" during the course of a game. My original response was to a guy who said ZZ will never be more than a role player for this team. That alone is ridiculous. However, he's already top 4 in minutes played. If you play more than half the game of every game, you aren't a role player. You're a freaking basketball player.

You must not listen to very many people talk about basketball then. You’ve seriously never heard people refer to Dennis Rodman as a role player? You’ve got a WAY more negative definition of that term than most people. I’d find you sources including former nba players, but I’m sure you’d dismiss them all as not knowing anything about basketball

The Zag’s program has to be flush with cash, flying everywhere and staying in nice places. UTC buses everywhere, traveling on a budget. There were enough big programs interested in Smith that he’s probably landed an NIL deal and there’s not much if any of that at Chattanooga. That’s the culture change I was thinking about.

Best thing about Spokane is Post Falls Idaho and Coeur d’Alene Idaho are near by. That lake and the ski areas are great.

We’re in an embarrassing moment for the sport. They’ll have to rebalance it to maintain some equity. It’s going to be very tough given the reluctance of a court to limit options of the athletes regarding school choice or compensation. Pro sports solve parity with drafts, or try to. Not sure what they’ll do, but they’ll have to do something.
Really curious how this plays with football too.

Zags insiders have been saying this guy was a lock if he withdrew from the draft for awhile (I have a buddy that I meet for drinks every other week and he is a big Zag fan and he talks about their insider like he’s our Stoerner/BTO/AV)
Luckily, our insiders are free. You have to pay to get access to Caldwell's Zag boards,

No kidding. We had to essentially get all of the Julian Phillips news and Tyrese Hunter news by digging through other school’s websites or through SF. What the heck is up with VQ lately? It’s like they forgot basketball as a sport existed.

If the football team makes another leap then you can go ahead and forget about basketball coverage in the off-season.

Oops, I think I meant VQ rather than 247. Shows how much attention I pay

There’s been some speculation that VQ is joining On3 and Rob Lewis is getting left behind, hasn’t been confirmed but if that is indeed the case maybe he’s essentially “quit” on VQ. Hubbs, Price & McKee have all been covering some hoops recruiting.
