Tennessee under NCAA investigation over use of recruiting hostesses

Here's the easiest way to NOT commit a violation....

If you think that something you are about to do can be shown to do something that can be detrimental to recruiting, even in the slightest or even questionable, DON'T FREAKING DO IT. That's as simple as I can put it.

So boosters can't go to HS football games? Compliance is going to have their hands full with that one.

Best thing to do as a fan is enjoy the game. If the kid approaches you and wants to say hey how are you, do it.

But DO NOT talk about how great Tennessee is or anything of that nature if he is a recruit. Or offer any anything free, etc. If the kids initiate the contact with a fan, than more then likely it never amounts to anything. And as long as you aren't paying the kid or buying him dinner, then you won't have any problems.

Best thing, honestly, stay away from game. If you think you might do something to be questionable, just stay away. It's not like you aren't going to watch a kid for 4-5 years and see how they develop.

The one problem is, as raider has mentioned, that there are so many rules. Rules are broken all the time, with the overwhelming majority happening unknowingly or without any benefit to the athlete or university. Lord only knows how many I committed in a 4 year span.

Oh wait, ncaa trolls may be reading this. :ermm:

Which is why I said, if you think something is in question, don't do it.

How do you get around that all kinds of our players text and communicate with recruits on facebook, myspace, etc. and this somehow does not violate NCAA rules, but if a hostess does it, it somehow does. Are players not considered "representatives of the University" just as hostesses are?

I think that if you're 18 yrs old, then you shouldn't be governed as to what you can and can't do, however; I can understand having policies in place for minors. In either case, parents are usually involved in those decisions anyways. Why can't they let athletes make their own decisions if they are of age??? I mean, they should be smart enough to figure out where they want to play at some point right?

All these rules would make me not want to play at all, but then again I spent my time studying and in the stands. Maybe it's just me. Does anyone else think it's funny that the majority of the athletes being questioned are in this hellwhole of a state....Florida? (i live here):mega_shok:

One of the rules that was always hammered home was about dating. If a person was going to date an athlete, they were not allowed at any time to buy dinner for the athlete. Good on the wallet though.

The bolded part is huge. There is some lawyers trying to challenge the validity of NLIs now. If a kid signs them before they are 18, he or she could legally back out of it if they can prove the rule you mentioned in the court of law. But in the NCAA, that rule states it is a binding agreement. Let's say Bryce Brown had signed with Tennessee (before 18) then a few months later he wanted to sign elsewhere but Tennessee said no. In the NCAA eyes, it's legally binding, in the court of law, he might be able to break the contract and play at Alabama.
This will be a major issue the NCAA must work out next year.

Yup. My office says we aren't even allowed to be with athletes outside of a university function. This was the same way when I was a student. So many dang rules...

Maybe, if they aren't involved in anyway or going to try and influence a recruits decision. Ever wonder why typically ONLY the coaches go to game and represent the university during eval and contact periods?? This is why.

Yeah, couldn't have anything at all to do with the fact that they couldn't bring anyone else along per NCAA rules.

I understand once you are employed, but not as much as when you are a student.

Students are in the same peer group and given their affiliation, they will spend most of their time around other student workers and athletes. It is only natural that some will become friends and others become more than that much like athletes of different sports do.

Someone call the NCAA! Auburn recruiting violation below!

You're right. It was just a general rule to eliminate red tape for us students and not to piss off the coaches.

Well I can understand the legal binding document instance, however, it's like we are putting the NCAA on a pedestal and letting them running these kids lives. I mean, come on!! It's absurd. I mean if the House of Reps has to vote on the college football playoff bill, then that states that the NCAA don't run this country, so they need to get off their high horse! For instance, I'm in the Army and we had specific regulations pertaining to the recruiter, however, that's the government, not some organization. Lastly, (in the military) if someone is under 18, but the parents sign and give permission, then they become eligible for service. I think the government should be considered in the NCAA rules and policies. I'm not however stating that they should rule the NCAA, but the NCAA should regard the government.

If anything comes of this is that the hostesses will not be allowed to associate with the football program or athletics in general I don't see any major violations anywhere...this is a case of coaches trying to knock lane down while they have the chance they see what he is building and are trying to stop it...we call those people haters

Yes, intimidation. He doesn't pick at any coach in particular, except CUM. And really, he just doesn't let him run all over him and stands up for himself. I highly doubt the football program had any knowledge of this and I will support Kiffin and the team all the way. They are trying to break us really! People point fingers at us, saying things will backfire because of the fued with CUM, but I think in time, CUM will get his. His little kingdom is coming to an end anyways. I have written several letters to politicians and I don't care to write more, especially concerning this bs!

I think this..Coaches are grasping at anything because of the way Kiffin came on the scene...

Well at least VN implicitly gets a call out... We all know when they refer to "internet message boards" that they had to have seen this board.

That and they didn't get into a video with Lil Wayne...

This is complete BS! And it boils my blood. What is the NCAA going to do next? Investigate our coaches for farting too much? C'mon!

It is obvious they have been singling us out. The article even says so itself: "generally, it was not common for the N.C.A.A. to interview recruits interested in a particular university or to ask them about a particular program." They know what they are doing. They also know this could have a big impact on our recruits; and they are probably laughing about it behind closed doors.

Do you know how many universities have "hostesses"? This is not right. The NCAA really needs to get a hobby. Start a coin collection, take an art class, do some wood carving, start a fight club, build a replica of the Empire State Building out of Legos, start a book club, make some pottery, travel to other countries, have NCAA employee three legged races, get a girlfriend, invent a new religion: Tim Tebowism, dig a very deep hole, learn a new language, write screen plays, start "The NCAA Bar and Grill", have eating contests, collect sea shells, play in traffic, climb a mountain, go birdwatching, follow a touring band, restore a car, blow up a car, go scuba diving, run for president (No wait... Don't!), take a cooking class, start a wine club, build houses for the needy, work up the courage to finally ask Tim Tebow out, go club hoppin', buy an XBox 360 and play Halo 3 all day, clean out your garage, learn to play an instrument, go to Med school, or read the dictionary. ANYTHING! Just leave our Big Orange ALONE!!!

Go Vols!!!

This is it? Holding signs saying, " Come to Tennessee" ??? Interviewed Lattimore and that's all that happened? C'mon fellas. You got to have more than that. Secondary at most. NCAA making a mountain out of a mole hill. Disgusted with the amount of thumbs being pressed on us for petty crap. DO YOUR THING CLK AND CEO!! KEEP BRINGING IN TOP 5 TALENT!!
