Teacher fired for giving zeros

My mom was talking about this, in her old school system the lowest grade you can get now is a 60. So you take a test, answer none of the questions, and you get a 60. Here in Hamilton county there are roughly 43k students and all of them passed last year. Yet 70% of the high school graduates that go to Chatt State have to take remedial math and English.

In my son's school if you make less than a 60 then you get the 60 and can take the test home and study it and retake the following day. You then get the average of the 2 grades. If you work your tail off and do your best and make a 61 then you are out of luck. No retake for you and you get your 61. We wonder why people turn out the way they do.

This is pathetic.

My college had an unusual standard. Nothing less than 75% would allow me to pass. Education today is sadly lacking. It breaks my heart.

It's probably all an effort to make schools look better for the state standards. Show as many people are at least passing as possible.

Most likely. The standards the teachers are held to are impossible in many areas. There are my kids that are sent to school simply for babysitting, and their parents don't care if they're educated or not. Teachers are not allowed to discipline or fail them anymore.

I know of a kid in elementary school that is dangerous (I can't go into much detail, but he really is a threat to other students) and the school system can't get him out of the school at this point and will most likely have to wait until several students are severely injured. I wish I could share more of what I know because it is shocking and disheartening at the same time that a kid like this is around other kids.

if he has hurt someone before I would bring it to the police's attention.

His parents have some pull. It’s an unreal situation. From what I know of his behavior, he fits the profile of someone that is abused (good chance of sexual abuse). I have a strong suspicion the dad is doing something to the kid.

I approached it differently, my little 60 lb daughter was coming home with multiple bruises, all from a boy that was targeting her. I watched it at recess. He would find her knock her Down. The schools teachers standing there did nothing.
I met with the principle who promised to correct the problem. It continued. I met with the principle again and said since you find it hard to stop this I'm Gonna teach my child how to deal with a bully. She warned me to let the school handle it. I said we've given you a chance and I'm going to make that decision now. The next day he stabbed her with a pencil in her leg.
I taught her how to bring him to his knees and finish it. She did, next time he touched her. Of course there was a parents meeting. I was threatened with a law suit and told the parents with pictures what their son had done to my daughter. They left quietly after i said bring it. The school had no legal standing to suspend my daughter because they failed to protect her. The bully never touched her again.
No one messed with my daughter after that. She understood the difference between bullying and defence.

That is horrible, kids like that lash out because they have no other outlet. We had a couple of kids that used my house as their refuge from uncaring or uninvolved parents.
I know one that was abused by the step father, one serious conversation with the mother and step dad was gone. The child was still severely damaged and is to this day. I honestly don't know what more i could have done.

Over 90% of the public school systems in the US are in a lawsuit because they suspend minority students at a higher rate than non minority. What the lawsuit ignores is the amount of times the minority student is acting out in a way that is harmful and disrespectful to the other students.

I had to deal with this last year. Kid was cussing me out because I was making him do work and when he didn't do his work gave him a zero. He was confused on why he had a bad grade so I told him if he did his work is work with him to get a better grade. Of course he still didn't do his work and threatened to beat me up even though I was twice his size. I didn't back off so eventually he tried to leave the class and I stopped him from doing so because he had a history of leaving the building. Needless to say he was threatened me on the hallway and I walked him to the office asking another teacher to watch my class. The kid ends up getting 1 day ISS and the principal's explanation of why he got ISS was not what I described.

The test scores here are pathetic, the state is wanting to take over multiple schools. There’s a reason a quarter of kids here are in prep schools. So think about that, a quarter of people with kids pay taxes for schools and don’t send their kids to those schools. That should mean plenty of money which is always the complaint and yet the school performance is abysmal and there is STILL hundreds of millions in deferred maintenance that needs to be done. Where is the money going?

I feel really bad for what teachers have to go through. Trying to do what's right with kids who's parents are basically absent and haven't raised their kid with any measure of respect for anyone let alone themselves.
You have my total respect, i would have been fired after i yanked him up by his neck.
Not to mention low wages..shhesh. Apply for sainthood now.

Yes. I’d challenge anyone to a day in our inner city schools.

Not sure of the numbers, but similar situation here in Louisville. Strong private and parochial schools. We pulled our oldest son out of kindergarten when he started telling stories of the behavior he was seeing and saying he didn't want to go to school anymore. He's thrived in private school. In 9th grade now and taking advanced physics. I didn't take physics until I was a junior! Needless to say, we put our younger son straight into the same school.

As far as where the money goes, here a large part goes to bussing kids across town for socioeconomic integration (racial integration was struck down several years ago and quickly replaced by this). Some kids spend 2-3 hours a day on the bus. Ridiculous.
