Taking a Look at #53

GT-- run heavy, so he will be fine with his surrounding cast...
Indiana St-- fine
FL-- don't think they won't go at him and try and find his weakness
UMASS- fine
GA-- if heavy run with Chubb and Co, he may be okay, but if they start passing we are in trouble unless our corners have improved.
SC-- hopefully Kirkland is back.

The UGA OC is in love with his QB and TE. So much so Chubb and Michel had a sit down with Smart and Chaney about it before deciding to return, they felt underutilized, disrespected (see the 3rd or was it 4th & short call against us where they handed it to the human joystick all 170 lbs of him which failed, similar plays against others as well), and that the offense went away from Richt's kids to Kirby's kids Eason & Nauta. There are internal problems at UGA which Smart smoothed over but if Chubb & Michel and the almost all frosh OL at UGA aren't getting it done, Chaney will move to Eason and Nauta as first options again, best believe that, and Chubb and Michel will be stewing. And before everybody starts telling me how great Chubb is again, he and Michel played against GT last season and came up on the losing end of things ... again.

I've been reading a lot of posts lately slamming jumper. I think it's pretty crazy and shows a lot about how much people know about football on these boards. If Jumper hadn't came here as walk on red headed white kid from TN no one on here would be bashing him. If he came in as a Legacy with a dad that played here he would be talked about how is going to be all-SEC. Fact is. He is Smart! Which is half of the MLB position. Is he as athletic as Kirkland? NO and Kirkland could end up a 1st or second round Draft pick. Their are plenty of great MLB's that don't have the athleticism as a Kirkland. Quit acting like you all are the best football scouts in the country. Truth is most of the people on here don't know **** and haven't played past the H.S. level and think they know more than some of the best talent evaluators and coaches in the entire country. People who live this and have their ENTIRE life. So with that being said I'll go with what the coaches say about who the best is and give the best props for out working the other guys at the same position and becoming the starter and hope for the best this season. Rant over Go Vols!'

Good god some of y'all are more intent on dragging him through the mud and pissing / moaning instead of trying to make the best out of the situation. Jumper played his butt off against UF and was serviceable in plenty of other games, nothing indicates he won't be the same this year.

For all DK's talent, I'd rather have someone that can actually be on the field (as Jumper can) instead of someone immensely talented who is perpetually sidelined with injuries.

Hope we win big, and I hope all you people crying about Jumper have a wonderful feast of crow next week.

Like shoop said last year "you think our defense was bad? It was as good as it was because of Colton Jumper" his statement there solidified my firm belief that you should never listen to D4H because he is a blooming idiot. That's pretty much all I got from that comment.

For his sake, I hope Jumper dominates. He gets way too much hate from you "VFLs." I think he can be solid but not great.

I'm more frustrated with how we've recruited the lb position. We shouldn't be this thin before the first game. Hopefully our unproven young guys are ready to step up.

It's funny that everyone keeps saying when we play florida, that Jumper's like of speed will hurt us. Now it may, but he played against UF and Georgia last year and I don't think UF crossed mid-field but once in the second half. He played well against UGA also. Now I hope and believe he has probably gotten stronger and he needed too but he wouldn't be number 2 at MLB if he wasn't any good. I think Bituli and Sapp will also be factors especially as we go forward. But folks that continually are trashing this kids play really need to stop, at least wait and see how he fares. Basing his performance 2 years ago to today is quite frankly stupid. GBO!!!!

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if CJ has a break out game against GT. He knows the system and that is VERY important in an assignment game. Cut the kid some slack and let's see how Monday goes.

sure, we are a mediocre SEC team who has been terrible for a Decade. If you think talent like Jumper would have seen the field in the 90s and early 2000s you're lying to yourself

Colton's not the only one you could say this about.

As much as everyone loved AJ, he made more than his share of tackles "sideline to sideline" 3 or 4 yards on the wrong side of the line of scrimmage.

Nick Reveiz was recruited by 3 schools and ran a 4.7 40 at the combine.

Dale Jones (one of my all time favorites) was drafted in the 10th round and was a replacement player for the Cowboys in 1987.

The NeverColton crowd needs to shut up and get behind whoevers wearing orange on the field. This would be the worst thing about VolNation.com - not the site, but the embarrassing whiners.

No he wouldnt. he wouldn't see a snap at Florida, Bama, Auburn, LSU, or any other team who consistently win a lot of games. The fact he hasn't been recruited over is laughable.

I see that you are a tough talker behind a computer screen. I'm sure you probably didn't even play high school football and yet know so much about college. What's laughable is listening to you act like you know what you are talking about. 🙄

He has played in big games for us and been serviceable as a backup. However, he simple doesn't have SEC starting LB talent. He is regularly late to the ball due to speed or timidness, he misses tackles as guys with the ball are more talented, and when he's in the play he often piled on at the end after the guy is already wrapped up. If he is the starter all season, we will struggle badly. He hustles and gives his all, so I love his heart. He simply would not start for any other SEC team.

Does Colton Jumper read Volnation?

I sure hope so. You talk about motivation? Good old school motivation right here. He oughtta play meaner than hell this year. On fire to prove the haters wrong.

"Those bastards!!!!!"

Unless were truly worried about actual "hurt feelings".

I bet people have doubted him all his life. That's prob his prime mover at this point. It is what it is.

I remember pro football focus having Jumper graded as the highest out of all our defensive players at 84.4 in the A&M game

He was also our highest rated defensive player against Florida with an 86.3

Love him or hate him, he gives his all

The profootball focus ratings on jumper are intriguing. In fact, they inspire a good thought experiment.

Are they valid? Is it a rating you can set your clock to? Would the rating system break down if pursued in continuance, would the logic hold? Is this THE moneyball of football?

If so, are modern teams like bama missing the mark by recruiting all these 5 stars?

Is it possible to assemble an entire team of Jumpers? An entire team of low star, intelligent, hard working assignment football players. Apparently PFF says YES.

If they all got 85 and 86 ratings surely that team would go undefeated, correct? I mean, according to PFF jumper constantly outplayed Derek Barnett, and the entire team, even. Imagine an entire team of players that outplay the hyper productive value that a Derek Barnett offers.

WHOA! WE ARE GONNA CHANGE THE WORLD!!!!!!!

Now dont tell me MLB is a position that doesnt require athleticism. Because "Bama" thinking says it does.

so lets do it. A team of 86 pff rated wonders. SEC champs baby. Will we win it all?

Or will we be Navy?

There's def-room for improvement, however I'm not letting d4h cloud this issue --

remember, per d4h on 8/23: "THIS ROSTER IS ABSOLUTELY LOADED WITH NFL TALENT" and on 7/30 24/7 already prepared d4h to be ready for a limited-dkjr + a useful CJ:

"Butch Jones shared the bad news first on Friday, when he described middle linebacker Darrin Kirkland Jr. as "very, very limited" early in fall camp with an unspecified injury."

" Bob Shoop, in fact, sees the senior linebacker as a starter, capable of stepping in and filling the void left by Kirkland without the Vols missing a beat."

"I said it all last year, Colton Jumper, we all look at him as a one," said Shoop, Tennessee's second-year defensive coordinator. "He's played a lot of big football for us."

he came in and did a respectable job for us last year, i wont throw dirt on him, if he is named the starter I trust that he is the best option at the time....period

Exactly. I am doubtful that he will start over Bituli...but if he does, thst means he beat out Bituli, who is very talented and could end up being all conference before he is done playing at UT. Jumper doesna solid job...just not quite as good as JRM and some of the other NFL linebackers of the past.

Simple fact is many people here, of all colors, look at him and think he slow just because he is white. Which is stupid. He has decent speed for a MLB, and average size.

Just the fact they have not been able to recruit over him is what makes me the most worried. He's limited, everyone knows it.

I do agree. Can't believe we have not recruited over him. It's been three years to recruit multiple guys over him.
