Taking a Look at #53

The good thing is that Jumper won't get you beat because he made a mistake. The bad thing is that Jumper will get you beat because he didn't make a mistake.

As long as the DL stays disciplined and takes care of their gaps, Jumper will do fine for the runs between the tackles. We will play a 4-3. It's critical the will and sam LBs take care of the off tackle runs. The safeties will also have a huge role in supporting the LBs. We'll be fine. There'll be instances where our discipline breaks down, but I think it will few and far between.

Are we going with a 4-3 for GT?

Could he be a better linebacker?sure he can, maybe another year in the program will improve him over last year.
To me,he is not as bad as some say he is. He does need to get a little quicker and stronger but it's not like he is getting chased off the field every play.
As for the other guys maybe they haven't learned the position enough as of now to pass him up. Who knows, this game might be the coming out party for a player to step it up at MLB.

Coaches gonna play who they think gives them the best chance to win and apparently that's CJ. He's got a couple of 4 stars sitting behind him so either they missed on the evaluations on them or CJ's looking pretty good in practice. I'm betting its the latter.

With a run heavy team like GT he will have a good game.
the few actual relevant knocks that have ever been brought up about Jumper have been in the pass coverage phase of the game. Our linebackers will have little to no pass coverage responsibilities vs GT.

Another big thing is though he hasn't seen much option in college Jumper played against mostly option teams in HS and played for a team that ran mostly that offense. Honestly I think a team like GT (option/run heavy) is where Jumper can shine most.

Yes, I think the G.T. should be a great game for C.J. He is a veteran that knows our defense and will probably pick up on GT offense very quickly. I do not see GT having greater athletic ability than C.J. I also see CJ leading the d line and ends to meet their responsibilities.

For Tennessee to beat GT the defense must play smart, assignment football and not give up big plays.

He may have issues with other teams that are more athletic. However, he held his own last year so I am hoping for the best. We should also start seeing some young guys filling in behind him.

Go Vols!

Well sort of...I expect Gaulden plays what we used to call a rover or monster man back in the day. So if you want to call Gaulden a LB for a day then yes 4-3. :)

I was thinking Nickel as well for our base. That might not be the case. I think Gaulden and our Safeties will get the glory from the battlefield.

w/out it being confirmed, i think it was discussed by the coaches a week or so ago that in this game, we probalby would see "a lot" of nickel. they want sure tacklers and guys that can set an edge. rely on the MLB and DL to play their guy and make those tackles in the middle of the field.

agree, safeties in run support, and nickel will be a big part of the defense.

i also thought i saw where we were going to play zone coverages outside. which is a bit odd for shoop, that's not what he likes to do, rather a reaction to the offensive style we're facing. then pick your spots to be aggressive and bring pressure.

i think we're gonna have to show a little patience with the defense in this game. they're gonna get yards. and it will likely be a little frustrating at times.

Just the fact they have not been able to recruit over him is what makes me the most worried. He's limited, everyone knows it.

Ever hear of a youngster out of Middle Tennessee named Bituli?

I have said before, maybe he was instructed last year to not "crash in". Injuries may have had him "reading" then reacting.

The only thing I question is his speed. I don't see his "fall" into short pass coverage or his sideline to sideline speed being good enough.

I'm not worried about Jumper, he's been tested already.

I think we will be fine. To think this staff hasn't recruited over Jumper is laughable. Everyone behind him is more talented than him. It's his knowledge and experience of the defense that's keeping him on the on field infront of freshman. Yea he's missed some big plays and made other mistakes. But he's made more plays than he has mistakes. Go vols!

#53, Colton Jumper could be UT's MLB for a while. So, I thought it would be good to take a look at his potential. Can he be good, or even great at the position?

After watching his highlights from 2016, I believe CJ has the potential to be very effective at the MLB position.

Thoughts?

I think Jumper will do fine. If he hadn't come on as a preferred walk-on and his daddy was not a donor, the jughead fans would not have any ammo to fire at him. He has shut out the noise and still played hard so far, and I expect him to continue.

Everyone is well aware of Daniel Bituli, but if he were winning the position in practice, I assume he would be named the starter.

our base defense for all intents and purposes is a nickle.

Normally a nickle is replace linebacker with corner and 4-2-5 normally replaces that linebacker with a safety.

Guys that keep pointing to Florida last year, 9 took over that game. Jump may have accidentally made a couple plays, buts let's be honest, Barnett was too much. I'm going to sit down and break down Jump's film to illustrate all the flaws in his game. Namely, the fact he's the only MLB I've ever seen UT play to consistently be within 3 yards of a tackle and never make one. Also if you're in your 5th year in the program and you're meh at best it's time to let the young talent play. Give me Ignont, or Bituli, or flip Coleman to MLB from o-line. I'm just tired of watching him FCS it up and everyone defending him.

Come on man, "accidentally made a couple plays." Way to go out of your way to not give him credit.
