Swain hints at opt-outs

With two entire power 5 conferences not playing the NFL scouts are going to have to change how they do things anyway. Most of these decisions will be made at pro-days and combines. The NFL is extremely analytical and they dont rely on "highlight reels". They look at numbers. You are X tall, weigh X pounds run X fast and can lift X weight. Everything else is tertiary at best. Anybody that sits out isn't risking much this year. It would be different if everyone else played and you blew your ACL and were the only one sitting out. That's not true here.
Well the big ten may end up playing after all.

The most important thing is still game film. You have to have game film first before you ever care about measurements. The NFL has scouts everywhere and the only way guys can get on anybodys radar is through their performance in games.

It only makes sense to opt out for the NFL if you were a bonafide first round talent. Maybe second round. Middleton may have a shot, but if he played he could really upgrade his stock. He is likely a 6th rounder at best right now. He can really improve his stock if he dominates in an SEC only schedule.

On top of everything, the virus is dwindling and we know that it has close to zero risk for someone his age. Really no reason for him or Solomon to drop out. I just really wish they could show the players the actual risk. Not just the fear porn.

Exhibit A, Jamie Newman.
He’s got enough film for some team to take a flyer, but he’ll drop compared to what he would’ve projected as a starter. It might be worse if it’s perceived that he opted out more due to Daniels.

The players opting out at LSU are topped ranked players. Chase is a top 2-3 WR. The DL is a top prospect also. Not comparable to Soloman and Middleton.
Nobody is arguing that Biletnikoff winner Chase hasn't proven himself. But the DL guy Shelvin showed NFL potential, but needed a big season to lock in a spot. No guarantees you will get drafted or make a roster with history of battling weight at 6-2, 375.

I'd say he's gotten advice from someone that this season will be looked at not as a normal season, therefore whatever tape you produce will be given not as much weight by scouts, and if you think you'll not be the starter anyway it's better to just go ahead and start getting ready for the combine, where you can wow scouts and shoot up draft boards.

I think that's terrible advice given that his entire resume consists of one season at Wake, but it's absolutely what a lot of kids are hearing. Particularly from agents who want to get paid now.

Agents always have their best interests...fade to images of oily mustached guy short term leasing Hyundai’s and 6 month gym memberships.

What’s moronic is making blanket insulting statements without knowing individuals health history. Respect a players personal decision and move on with your sad life.
I don't know their driving history either... but I would find it silly if they said they will never drive or ride in a car again even after considering their chances of dying in an auto accident are many times that of dying or even being hospitalized with Covid.

But do pray tell... what kinds of chronic health issues are dozens or even hundreds of athletes fit enough to play college football stricken with?

Do you know ANYTHING about the truths slowly leaking out concerning Covid? It RARELY has a severe impact on anyone under 30 and then almost always people who have seriously compromised health.

Anyone "afraid" of this virus in that age group who has EVER played without considering the dangers of the flu... has been manipulated by false propaganda.

This week on the Swain Event he has mentioned several times that there were still some players that were considering opting out. Yesterday, he particularly mentioned that it would really cause a problem at "one of our positions" as if multiple players from one position were considering. Today while referring to opt outs, the defensive line came into the conversation. He has not mentioned names?
Speaking of which, has anyone heard anything about Omari Thomas in camp?

If a player is healthy, he should play this year.
If a player is not, he shouldn’t be out there anyway.

Tomorrow is not guaranteed.
Take advantage of today’s opportunities.........

It sucks that people can't think for themselves.

You'd think if people really cared about their lives theyd do the research to know as much as possible about this virus.

Its what I have done and obviously you have too!

I know a guy whose 21 years old and perfectly healthy but he uses gloves to pump his gas....

He has done zero research and only hears what's bad.

On that subject, I saw on the Channel 3 11:00 PM in Chattanooga last night that the CDC has sent notifications to all 50 states informing them that a vaccine may be available as soon as late October. The news was that there will be several different vaccines that will be available. What say you VolNation?

My initial reaction with all such things is, “don’t believe the hype.”

Unfortunately this is not likely. The Pfizer candidate requires storage temps so low (minus 94) it could only be kept in hospitals and clinics with special equipment so that one would not be widely available like a flu shot. The Moderna candidate is reportedly stable at minus 4 degrees so a place like a CVS Pharmacy could handle that one with portable freezers, but either way there is alot of logistics required to provide and guarantee storage. This also assumes the FDA shortcuts their normal approval process. I know there are other possible candidates but there seem to be too many moving parts here for anything to be widely available prior to January 2021. It just seems to be better for the guys to just follow all the mask and proximity rules and buckle up and play. Following the rules explicitly is a tall order for 18-22 year old guys I know, but the coaches and support staff seem to be on board with all of it and our team leadership appears good. I guess the wildcard is you don't know how good our competitors are at following the rules so one sloppy team could crush the season for others.

Good post. The availability will also be a problem. Healthcare workers and high risk groups will be first followed by others. Getting the vaccine to hundreds of millions of people in the US and billions worldwide will take a long time. Volunteering to be an early recipient of a vaccine developed in record time is a risk also.

Exhibit A, Jamie Newman.

I was hoping Newman would play this year. Being his 1st year with this OC it would be impossible for him & UGA to succeed. Just like JG it was not possible but now that JG will be with OC 2 years in a row, All SEC in future.
So UGA does not have a chance this year QB can't succeed with first year OC association.
It's true I read it here on Volnation

I’m a physician. What are your credentials? And what “truths” do you have to teach us about? Love to hear your conspiracy theories, I imagine they will be quite entertaining.

If u listened to Pruitts presser the other day he really really stressed “Getting to the qb,guys in the middle need to get better at getting into the backfield etc”..I just took it as normal speak but if u dig a lil deeper it’s either a shot of “Hey step it up,u know who u are”Or he knows we may lose a guy or two and it legitimately has him worried so he may be trying to motivate the guys we do have.Just speculation but he did touch on the dline and getting after the qb quiet a bit.

Yeah I thought the same thing. Really gonna suck if Middleton and Solomon opt out. Need those guys. We already lost Emmit Gooden as well.

The risk of getting Covid would be greater if they opt'd out and started hanging around the rest of the student body. I would be curious to see how many of the players have actually already had Covid but didn't notice due to the symptoms being minor. Does anyone know if this testing has been done to the team?

Good point. And if someone does opt out, how likely are they to even stay in school?
