Serious ? about IF Butch were fired.

It was a weird game. Similar to the 10-9.

We dominated that game on the ground with Henry....about the only time that winning the running game hasn't mattered to who would win....that and the 2015 game. Of course, the two times where it didn't matter was when we won the running game.

If butch gets fired (I hope he doesn't) would we give brady Hoke a chance? I know things didn't work out at Michigan but he has done well everywhere else.... if not who would be a legitimate candidate?

No need to fire him if you aren't willing to put 6-7 million/year on the line for a top level coach. But UT will do like they always do, try to find a diamond in the rough and hope for the best.

clarity

Fulmer was fired because Hamilton had Kiffin locked up and sold the boosters that Kif would come in and put Tennessee where USC was at. He sold them Kif and his all star staff including his Dad. He was granted the power to make move and told if it failed it would cost him.

If he had not already had Kiffin in the bag he would not have sold it at that time. Fulmer would have won out in November and put UT in a bowl and continued on coaching.

that is the only reason it was able to happen in 2008

I do not recall the flow of incidents quite the same way. Hamilton had extended Fulmer's contract after Dangerous Dave returned to be OC and righted the good ship Tennessee Football. Cutcliffe moves on, Fulmer's Vols stumble out of the gate in 2008, so, Hamfisted Hamilton fires Fulmer in early November, but allows him to finish out the season. Hamhanded Hamilton then makes the rounds, soliciting top-performing college coaches, all of whom rebuff his overtures. Mikey then latches onto out of work Kiffin and spins it as the hire to lift Tennessee back unto the heights.

I was in this thread yesterday and decided to watch some clips from the game on youtube, there is a gator fan that posted a 15 min video or so that is a good breakdown of the game. I'm sitting there watching a Tennessee team dominate the gators and should have been up 21 in the 1st quarter, Also in the 4th Q needing the 1st to run out the clock and win we run a toss to the left and Henry got stopped in his tracks like 2 yards short. That last gator drive is killer too because we couldn't stop the momentum, reminded me of the LSU game at home where J Russ drove the field to win the game on the last series. tough to watch.

They shouldn't entertain that thought (Hoke)...but this is UT, so they'd probably do it without any thought given to the contrary

Watched it sitting in the UF section.

Agreed! I wish other people would stop putting damn Bama on a pedestal. Other teams are beating them ffs. People want to cry about playing them and then cry when someone suggests we stop playing them every. Win the damn game. It's year five. Win the (weak AF East) or beat Bama or gtfo.

Bama deserves the pedestal they are on. It's hard to grasp how dominant they have been so here are some numbers.

Saban has won 3 SEC Championships in a row. He is only the 3rd coach to win back to back championship games in the 25 year history, the last being Fulmer in 97-98.

Saban has coached 138 games at Bama and lost 19. Giving him a winning % of 86%. Ignoring his first year that changes to 125 games and 13 losses or a winning % of 90%.

Saban has coached Bama for 10 years, only missing the SEC championship 4 times. One of those years he still won a national championship.

This is the craziest stat, ignoring his first year, Saban has coached 125 games. Only 6 were played with Bama being out of the national championship picture.
In comparison Butch coached 6 games in 2016 with UT being out of the national championship picture.

That freaking LSU game. Russell clearly fumbled the ball on that drive and we clearly recovered it. Officials screwed us again.

But Florida, on that drive, wasn't only good beteeen the 20s. They started at their 9 and were at our 5 before you could blink your eyes twice. And quite honestly, Gaffney was wide open in the end zone on what turned out to be the game winning play....just didn't hang on to the ball long enough (imho) when our db got hand in. Both Florida and UT looked like different teams on that drive.....they looked dominant and we looked like we had given up.

If that play is called correctly I think it goes to OT. No way Spurrier goes for it on 4th down, he takes the 3 and OT. Also when a play like that happens, wide open guy drops a late TD, it kills a team's energy. When you're driving to win the game it almost feels like you're in a movie and the good guys are about to win. When something like that happens you don't think "we'll get the next one", you think "that was our shot to win and we blew it".

Still had 3rd down play to score from the 5.....after walking down the field, virtually unimpeded. Spurrier may or may not have gone for it on 4th, he tended to gamble a bit more than your average coach, and they had great momentum there. But who knows, all water under the bridge.

In almost every thread that a losing or even 8-5 season should get Butch fired. I was just wondering about the economics of it happening. The buy out would be huge and a new coach of the caliber wanted would cost closer to 5 million than 4. Just asking. It's the off season and I need something to read.

Oh how I hate the off season on here...

In 1998, UT won
In 1999, UF won by 2 at the Swamp
In 2000, UF won due to an egregious call. Gaffney did not catch that ball.
In 2001, UT won at the Swamp.

In the last 4 games, the two teams were pretty much even (UT would have gone 3-1 if not for a blown call). UF only scored 30 once in those 4 games and that was due to a late TD. Fulmer/Chavis had solved the UF offense by 2001.

Tennessee lost in 2000, and the fact that some try to claim it as an asterisk win, or moral victory, is dishonest. Does Florida get to claim 2004 as a win? UF fans were just as upset at the Johnathon Wade-Dallas Baker no-call combined with the refs messing up the game clock, but 100% of Gator fans count that as a loss, period.

Besides, back to 2000, suppose Gaffney did not catch the ball. UF got screwed by the refs on the play before when a TD was called back by a phantom "man down field" call, UF still had another down to score if the Gaffney play is called incomplete, and even still, UF had 4th down to kick the chip-shot game-tying FG. UT was a loooooooong way from winning in 2000 even if the Gaffney play was incomplete. So how the heck can you call it anything other than a loss? You can't.

Mike had Kiffin locked up in mid-October... of course it wasn't public because he had not fired Fulmer yet. Why I said he used Kiffin to get booster buyin to pull the trigger on Fulmer. Seriously don't believe it happens if not for that..

Dang.
We've had back to back 9 win seasons.
Two bowl wins in a row.
Numerous injuries to key players the last couple of years.
Top recruiting classes.
The largest watched game in history.
Give CBJ a little slack he's working pretty hard for us.

He gave all of that slack to Fla and Okla and Ark a couple of years ago.

Whatever was left aTm, USCe and Vandy got it last year.

We were unstoppable between the 20's. A Spurrier coached UF team was always willing to give up 3. It was only a matter of time.

Still, with all that, UT just needed 1 1st down to seal the win...It's a theme that's repeated itself far too many times.

OK and FL 2015 come to mind immediately.

#15 overall and #7 in the SEC the past two years. How is that "top"?

Jones blew his best chance to win the East. There were injuries, but not bad enough to justify losses to 7-5 USC and 6-6 VU. He could be working 24/7 and it wouldn't matter. This is a results-based game, not an effort-based game.
