SEC media: TN Picked 3rd in East; no votes for SEC Champ

Stoops has been at UK the same number of seasons as Butch at Tennessee. 19-30 overall record with the BEST season being 7-6, which culminated in a drubbing by GT. All 5 seasons they get annihilated by Tennessee. To surmise, a losing record in 5 seasons with only one bowl loss to crow about. In which alternate universe is that "upward momentum "?

They finish 7-6 last year?

Yea, too bad other teams like UF and Bama don't have the same problems.

We've had good classes but we were not in situation to replenish at Bama level. Hope you're not serious.

They're just throwing out guesses each year between UT, UGA and UF. And almost always wrong.

If we beat candy and Jr last year, we'd be picked to stomp the rest of the east into the ground this year. If we'd have beaten Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl, they'd be ready for us to replace bummer!

Well , let's see-- UK beat Louisville and their Heisman QB to win the Governor's Cup, beat Miss St-- their cross-division rival-- beat Vandy and SCAR to tie UT and UGA for 2nd in the SECE and achieved their team goal of getting to a bowl game-- the Taxslayer Bowl. None of those things were accomplished the year prior and all represented a step forward for UK.

They seem to be feeling pretty good about their season and their coach in the alternate universe of Lexington.

So all Butch had to do was pull 2,5 and 5 efforts before last season and we could claim momentum? The more you know.

Not at all, it was being viewed that way all the way up through year 3. "Upward trend" was a catchy phrase here during that span, no?

Jones at UT

5-7 (2-6)
7-6 (3-5)
9-4 (5-3)
9-4 (4-4)

Stoops at the basketball school

2-10 (0-8)
5-7 (2-6)
5-7 (2-6)
7-6 (4-4)

Smart and Jones saved Mason's job.

I tailgated with a lot of SC AD people in Columbia last fall. Going into that game they very apprehensive about WM. They still were after the game but not to the same extent.

Or, this sounds crazy but here me out, Mason is actually a decent coach and he won those games by taking advantage of weaknesses and having a star RB. I know I know, anyone that Vandy would hire must be a bad coach, but just maybe he's not as bad as we all hoped he would be.

I think hes better than most give him credit for. Vandy aint the easy place to compete and he saved himself with UGA and UT wins.

I don't think Stoops would've made it to season 4 at UTK with 3 losing seasons in a row even if it was directly on the heels of Dooley.

Well considering that UK has had 7 winning seasons since 1978 and their all time record in football is 222-315-5 (.414) which is one spot below Memphis for that time frame. Yes. Then they are definitely on an upswing.

So if you and Beecher are correct, shouldn't SC be ahead of UK and UT?
I mean they went from 3-9 to 6-7. Doubling wins is some serious "upward momentum" by your hypothesis.

No, the media would still see us as a team that lost too much to the draft. They act like Dobbs is being replaced with a true freshman, Barnett with a 3* DE, and Kamara and Hurd with a converted TE. Dobbs is being replaced with a red shirt junior who has been with the program for 3 years. Barnett is being replaced with the 2016 #1 juco player who has Brady Hoke coaching him up. Kamara is being replaced with Kelly who was our #2 back last year, fits the system perfectly, and already has a longer run than Hurd did in 3 years.

We are reloading in 2017, not rebuilding, and the media will learn that in 2 months.

Who cares? My point is that, by their standards, UK has upward momentum. They accomplished what they set out to do last year and I don't hear many UK fans wanting Stoops fired.

Lol.
You made a declaration that, despite the reasons the media gave, they really had different reasons explaining upward momentum was the real deal but only for some of the teams. And now UK fans have something to do with it.
Seems a little complicated.
My opinion is that they gave their reasons, short and simple. So "who cares" you ask? I'm guessing the guy putting in work to change the narrative?

Could you clear up the term "upward trend or momentum".

Thanks

Okay, they also lost to Southern Miss at home and were locked in a shootout with the powerful New Mexico State Aggies. They lost to Bama, same as us, and are you really comparing Miss State sans Dak Prescott to Texas A&M? We took A&M to overtime in one of the most hostile environments in all of college football, which is really a nice step up at least from getting drubbed in Vaught-Hemingway. Also, did UK have to play defensive ends at defensive tackle by season's end due to injuries?

I think last year wasn't what it could have been, but you're completely blind if you can't say we're at least making strides to be better.

Does anyone know how many times the media has correctly predicted the East Division Champion over the last 15 years? 2 times.

I'm not sure if that's entirely accurate, but it sounds good and I think I heard it somewhere.

I was thinking I read once, but you are probably right. In any case, not being picked by the media would seem to be a blessing given their record of being repeatedly absolutely and absurdly wrong. It proves once again why we play the games rather than go on what the wizards of sports think.
