Umass has a legit QB. I'm throwing at Justin Martin all game if I'm them. It'll be interesting

Boosters haven't had much to do with the past three hires. Those are all on our ADs. Hammy wanted Kiffin-- he teed that one up all by himself. Dooley was a desperation hire. Boosters probably had to Google the name to find out if Derek was related to Vince or Pat. And CBJ was a knee-jerk, face-saving hire after Hart whiffed on his promises, then was publicly jilted by Charlie Strong. UT's problems have been top-down.

Is Currie better than Hart?

If he'll come offer him whatever it takes. I'm tired of swimming in mediocrity. When Florida fires Mac they'll probably hire Mullen. We need an elite coach at TN if we want to get back to where we were and where we belong.

I agree. Offer whatever. That’s my first call if Currie. I make him turn down something fantastic and if he does he does and so be it.

I will tell you what I want. I want Butch to win 9 straight ball games and get us an SEC championship.

I want to enjoy this season with these players, not some hypothetical season three years from now after a new coach has been brought in and has finally established his program.

Go Vols!

On personnel decisions, yes. To be fair, Hart did what he was hired to do-- consolidate men's and women's athletics and boost the bottom line. He was a ruthless cost-cutter and made hard, unpopular decisions that diminished goodwill. We had to kick him out the door and it cost us around $650K to do it. It cost us more than twice that to get rid of Hammy, not counting the lifetime perks.

I need help.

Mulling things over, I'm in the "Butch will not get us to a championship level year in and year out" camp.

However, what we went through after getting rid of Fulmer, what Texas has gone through after dumping Mack Brown, and what LSU is about to go through after dumping Miles... it all shows that getting rid of your 8-4 guy in hopes to get the "elite" coach is a gamble at best.

I don't know if I'm willing to do that. And I think the fanbase might escalate the situation so much that we're forced into it. Making THE coaching change is allllllllllll about timing. Not changing to make a change. In the modern world of "which side are you on" internet takes.... I'm on the fence.

I don't see any scenario other than a QD injury that would cause him to start JG. Look at this article: http://gamedayonrockytop.com/injuries-force-tennessee-talented-lineup/

The idea that it took injuries to force Butch to play his most talented lineup is utterly absurd.

I think QD would have to have a HORRIBLE performance vs Umass. Like 4 picks losing at half to see JG completely take over.
I think if we're getting dominated by Uga then we'll see JG. But I agree, I think it'll take injury to see JG. He'll do just enough

Butch hasn't shown he's any of those guys. And I wouldn't use Derek Dooley as your baseline.

Crawling out from my lurker bunker to give my thoughts, long post warning.
First, what I know to be true. Butch and company have done an outstanding job resurrecting the program from the Dooley years. This has been dissected ad nauseam but the irrefutable points are that the recruiting has been as good or better than could have been hoped. He is relentless and deserves a great deal of credit IMO. The APR issue is a close second in terms of a critical issue facing the program. I’m not sure how aware we are as a fan base of how close we were to having damaging, long term consequences if this trajectory wasn’t fixed.

I also know that Butch, in no uncertain terms wanted out at the end of last year. The Vanderbilt loss scuttled this. To his credit, once it was apparent he was here in 2017 he kept recruiting relentlessly and made what at the time appeared to be, and still may be proven to be, very strong moves on the coaching staff.

What is also true, the 3 out of 4 year recent UF losses are representative of his ingrained coaching deficiencies. I don’t know if it is a poor response to big game pressures, a lack of game day coaching ability, or risk aversion. I personally believe it is a combination of all of the above. The UF performances are a microcosm that pretty accurately sum him up for me, as a head coach.

The reason for the post is to address the coaching search talk. IT IS PREMATURE. What we need to understand, is that nothing has been predetermined for all of the reasons discussed. Mainly, UT can still win the east. We can still go 6-6. These two outcomes entirely dictate how a coaching transition occurs and that is why we need to stop with the speculation. I do believe that Butch will be gone next year, but it is how it happens that is yet to be determined. The preferred outcome is for a face saving win/win for coach and University. Butch takes a different job at a school without the associated pressures of big time SEC football. A negotiated buyout figure, offsets in the cost as a result of a new contract(s), minimizing the chaos of a transition are all critical to all parties. Only an 8 win or better pre bowl finish allows this to be in play. If we tank and finish 6-6, (or worse) then things become much, much messier. It will be expensive, maybe not $25 million as Hyams suggests, but assuredly more than $10 million. This also hurts in terms of who we can target as a head coach because of the reduced pool of money available to pursue top tier targets. It is foolish to think that the Admin/Boosters will pay for a home run staff and a costly buy out. Can anyone realistically disagree based on UT’s track record over the last two plus decades?

So, my hope is that we can do what we as passionate fans aren’t very good at. Pump the brakes until the season plays out, all of the conjecture at this point does nothing. Nobody knows yet how things will shake out. GBO, I’m back to my bunker.

Great post. :hi:

Vandy's #s will come down to earth as the season progresses but when was the last time they had the #1 defense in the SEC (actually, in the nation) and the top QB heading into week 4 with a win over a ranked opponent?

I think that defense will shut Dormady down if he's still the starter then. Wouldn't be surprised to see Vanderbilt beat Florida.

Ok but here is the difference. Each of those coaches are much better than Butch. All of them won their division and a national championship at least once. Butch has done none of those things.

You can't tell me we can not find a coach to win the East more than once per 5+ years. Clearly Butch is not that guy.

I hope pray the ‘no’ beside Urban’s name is because you think he wouldn’t come here and not that you wouldn’t want him.

I would be very excited that he is coming and very disgusted with myself for being so excited about a scumbag, at the same time.
