Not my first rodeo.

Like when I said we didn’t have the horses at DT.

Like when I said Jon Currie was a terrible hire.

Like when I said that Curries contract was the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen.

Like when I said it was not good that our AD was in the Bahamas during a coaching search.

Like when I said we were gonna hire Jeremy Pruitt.

Like when I said Mike Leach would be a bad hire.

Not gonna argue with some of these but.....

I don’t remember anyone liking the Currie hire or contract. Pretty much everyone wanted Blackburn or Fulmer, or a combination of the two

It wouldn’t have mattered if he was in Knoxville or China, he already had his guy.

Don’t remember a whole lot of backlash over Pruitt either

Some of my first and best VOLS football memories were listening to John Ward. Truly a legend.

Seeing all these posts honoring John Ward reminds me of when I grew up. Although I rarely heard JW, it did trigger memories of all the games I listened to on the radio.

At the risk of being a very old fart, the overwhelming majority of games or sporting events that I experienced were either on the radio or in person. TV games were way down the list as TV broadcasts were very limited compared to today. The other old guys will remember having but one baseball game on Saturday, maybe a college football game on Saturday and one pro football game on Sunday during their respective seasons. Most of the smaller bowls were tape delay and you'd have to wait and see them the next weekend on the Wide World of Sports.

If you wanted your sports fix, it was the radio...and AM radio at that. Night games were a challenge due to the poor AM signals.

Thanks for listening to my prattle and I'll go back to the porch and nap.

Was it a bad one? Did your car get totaled?

Oh sorry. You meant the country Iraq not a car accident. My bad.

John Ward was a part of my childhood, the voice for my Vols growing up. Most times I'd turn the radio on and the volume on the tv down. My friends and I had a National Championship party with about 20 of us but the only rule was that John Ward's voice had to be playing. To hear him calling that game in his last call was emotional, rewarding and something I will never forget. May you rest in peace John.

I just got an email that said John Ward passed away.
I just started crying for a man that I have known for 40 years, but never actually met.
He will always be the Voice of the Vols to me.

He will forever be the voice I hear when our Volunteers make a great play in football or basketball!
“Give him Six!”
“...tackled by a Host of Volunteers!”

“Bottom!”
“String Music!”

John Ward is the Legend the I was lucky enough to hear throughout my college years. Unparalleled in his abilty to paint a picture with words.

I will truly miss you Mr. John Ward. :hi:

Your words describe my reaction to the sad news. I flashed immediately to sitting in front of the radio with my dad on football Saturdays, listening as he counted down the yardage until, finally, Give Him Six! WooHoo! We did the same thing for basketball games - Bottom!

I still say “tackled by a HOST of Volunteers” when we make a swarming tackle...and smile thinking of my dad and those days. Just teared my own self up again.

I predicted Pruitt the day of or day after the Schianamo. That was more of a guess just cause I thought we’d have to go the coordinator route.

I think you were actually in agreement with me on the DT thing. There wasn’t many who were. That’s for sure.

As to Curries contract as I recall at the time he was hired I was the only one talking about him having a contract that paid him more fired than if he worked it out. Nobody wanted to hear it cause at that point we were stuck with him.

When I was moaning about the Currie hire this board had already started to circle the wagons around the hire.

My point in saying all that was to say that IDGAS if I’m on an island which is what another posted had said. I give my opinion on here. Sometimes I’m wrong and sometimes I’m right. I think the 2009 season was an underachieving season and I think for whatever reason we have people who overinflate Lane Kiffin then, now and probably always will.

I hated the Currie hire as much as you did...Then again..I was completely wrong about Fulmer, or so it appears at this point. I thought he would have trouble knowing when to stay out of the way. He is doing yeomans work though, just an outstanding job so far of providing anything needed for success where it counts..on the field. Currie is what we thought he was, another weaselly, pencil necked geek, bean counter Haslam lap dog.

They also put the miss st coach at like 8 or something like that

One of the guys that helps with the athlon rankings is on Nashville radio 102.5 the game every morning. He broke it down this morning. He said Moorehead has Mississippi State fans really excited and the team is set up to with this year. He then mentioned his tenure at Fordham that went well and then talked about turning around Penn States offense. He mentioned he was unproven as a Power 5 headcoach but there was enough to say he will be a good coach. I somewhat agree and do think he will be good, but idk about at 8. I’d say 10-14 range since he is still power 5 unproven.

Then when he talked about Jeremy Pruitt he didn’t mention any of his coordinator accomplishments, didn’t mention how CJP was recruiting so far and how UT fans feel about him so fa and instead made fun of the fact that CJP wore baggy pants and always looked uncomfortable. He also said if CJP can even get UT to a bowl game this year he will shoot up the rankings though. He just didn’t have any faith in him it sounded like.

The funniest part is the guy saying all this graduated from UT and is a UT fan.

I've never listened to him or watched one of his press conferences and thought he was uncomfortable. That's a joke. If anything he comes off as a little cocky. Which is nice.

Jimmy Hyams contributes to Athlon. That should tell you all that you need to know.
