Gus is our best case scenario, unless we're going to throw crazy money at Matt Campbell.

Established in this league, has won at a high level, has proven he'll let a good defensive coordinator come in and do his job.

He's going to have to work out some kinks within his offense - I share the opinion with most of you that it seems SEC defenses have figured him out to a certain degree - but even as is he's a floor 7-5 coach here.

He's the most stable candidate on the board as well - he'll get us to his floor quickly and keep us there. If he doesn't exceed it at the point we feel like he should have, we'll have that discussion.

But right now it's a no-brainer.
Just because he's better than your entire list doesn't mean it's a no brainer. There are plenty of better options

I mean there are two or three red flags with Gus.

1. He's making bank with his buyout, may want a year off from football.
2. Could we afford him? Auburn was throwing the bags at this dude
3. Run heavy offense philosophy, do we want more RPO in Neyland?

1.) If he wants a year off, he should take it. No one would begrudge him for that. Maybe go to Oklahoma or somewhere as an analyst for a year.
2.) His buyout tells me we could afford him - he's going to take a pay cut wherever he goes.
3.) I don't care what the strategy is - just score more points than the other team.

It really comes down to a few things.

1. Do they feel like Pruitt can make the changes necessary to get this fixed.
2. Do long term financial gains outweigh short term loss.
3. Do you have a candidate you feel can be successful.

Auburn must have someone they think is better than Gus lined up that is still playing. You just don't fire someone that you owe that much money, has beat Saban and went to national championship games, unless that is true. Right?
Maybe they've read... "The Tennessee guide for hiring and firing coaches, for dummies"

so a man who doesnt take a job just because its the highest paid is an idiot?

You say this like Freeze has been offered ANY of the other SEC jobs that pay more than UT does. My point is if Freeze has been turning down jobs in the SEC that are willing to pay more than UT has then he's an idiot.

The reality is Freeze wants to coach in the SEC again, but as of yet hasn't gotten a legit shot. There will be 7 jobs that have passed him over in these last 2 seasons (assuming Auburn is the last SEC job to hire a new HC this year). They aren't doing it because he is turning them away waiting on us...lol

Freeze is insanely overrated by this fan base.

Everyone always assumes a school fired their coach to jump on Freeze, when in reality the school doesn’t even give Freeze more than a passing glance.

Probably inflated a bit but freeze is a proven winner at every level of football at places with limited resources. He has proven he can win with inferior talent vs teams with more talent. What can he do with unlimited resources that he has never had? He could become a star or he could have some highs and lows like Herman. Regardless those are better than the amount of lows we have had hiring on the cheap. I don’t want to see any move made unless they have a big name sealed up. I don’t want a long search. I don’t want another question mark. I’d just ride Pruitt if it wasn’t a no brainer name.

Liberty has played the 108th hardest schedule in the country this year. Their opponents combined record is 22-58 and half the teams they played didn't even win a game this year. Liberty being 7-1 isn't really that impressive.
Please do not bring facts in here. You're just gonna get lambasted by some very knowledgeable football coaches. Consider yourself warned----you're welcome

In regards to #2, assuming Gus wants to get back into coaching, he'll probably take a pay cut from his last Auburn contract.

Even Auburn's admin knew he was wildly overpaid; they panicked and thought he was about to go to Arkansas.

But you want Freeze who never played in a SEC title game or National title and was fired with vacated wins?
What is not to get? How many SEC titles had Mehlen played for? Freeze was at Ole Miss, a crappy program. Gus was at AU, a destination job equal to us. Freeze's ceiling is miles higher.

Now do the same thing with Coastal Carolina, Iowa State, Oregon, Cincinatti, and Louisiana.

Gus has 2 SEC titles and 1 National title under his belt. Freeze's ceiling is miles higher than winning titles? Please explain that one for me Bass.
