Recruiting Forum Football Talk III

That goes for every coach's family. None of them have anything to do with how a football team plays but some fans can't separate the family from the coach. It's really sad.
My sons learned at an early age to tune out whatever they heard yelled from the stands. (HS in Georgia is just as bad). At the end of the day as adults they are tough, thick-skinned, and can handle criticism. That being said, anyone who directs things at a coaches wife or his family needs his a$$ kicked.

Gus is our best case scenario, unless we're going to throw crazy money at Matt Campbell.

Established in this league, has won at a high level, has proven he'll let a good defensive coordinator come in and do his job.

He's going to have to work out some kinks within his offense - I share the opinion with most of you that it seems SEC defenses have figured him out to a certain degree - but even as is he's a floor 7-5 coach here.

He's the most stable candidate on the board as well - he'll get us to his floor quickly and keep us there. If he doesn't exceed it at the point we feel like he should have, we'll have that discussion.

But right now it's a no-brainer.

Apparently Steele has a real shot to land the gig per the Auburn mods. Price said the same thing. Imagine paying $20mil to fire Gus to promote Steele?? Wow if that happens.

I Have to wonder if this isn’t being floated out there to get a few of their top recruits to sign this week and isn’t forthcoming

Where have I mentioned any player recruited by any coach. My discussion has been limited to character of a coach who can sign a contract with no real intention of fulfilling it and then running off and leaving kids holding the bag. It is for sure legal, but it is just as sure an indication of the character of the individual. The fact that lots of folks think he will do to UM what he did to us is pretty telling.
You’re speaking about the character of a coach. People like to use Aaron Hernandez as a strike against Urban’s character/lack of morals/do anything to win attitude. He didn’t exactly recruit scholar citizens or do a good job at keeping them in line and neither did Fulmer. Doesn’t necessarily mean either of them are bad people. But people sure do love to make Urban and Kirby out to be slime balls for things that our coaches have done/are likely doing now. The point I am making is that I don’t think the way they run their programs is a whole lot different than how Fulmer did whenever we were winning, and if that’s the case, the whole ‘won’t sell my soul’ bit is just hypocritical because we likely already have. It was just at a time when the masses were largely ignorant to the ways of CFB. Plus it’s an over exaggeration anyways. These are football coaches were talking about. Most of them are fine people who have flaws like everyone else. They aren’t the devil and hiring one with a somewhat checkered past doesn’t make you, the players, or the university morally bankrupt, much less irredeemable.

Regardless, I think continuing to hold a grudge against Kiffin after all this time is pretty ridiculous. He was young and stupid and made a dumb mistake. Mistakes made when young and stupid are usually prime for forgiveness. Or at least I hope so because I know I’ve made plenty. Also, I don’t think many people believe he is going to bolt from OM after one year. It’s just wishful thinking because we suck and are trying to will a coaching search into existence.

It's named the "Fulmer Cup" for a reason.

I have been out on Pruitt because of QBs handling. However the Twitter trolls with all the regurgitated comparisons of auburn and tn situation are not comparable. Look deeper than surface.

Auburn has had same coach for a long time. They have had stability. Gus been on hot seat every year for last 5 years. So this has been brewing for years. Boosters been preparing for this moment for years.

Meanwhile, TN has been paying coaches from multiple staffs to not coach here. Pruitt was riding a win streak coming into year 3. Nobody was prepared for a coaching search or to fund a buyout in a regular year let alone a pandemic year. Can you really judge a guy that had training camp without 50 guys then midsession loses 20 more. Fans may have quit but judging by the effort vs Florida and Vandy the players clearly have not quit. QB play looks better which makes offense look more competent. Kids still playing hard. Defense all of a sudden swarming to ball now that Pruitt calling plays again.

Imo people need to chill and let things play out behind closed doors. We don’t need this social media madness making kids think twice. Let them get kids signed take advantage of lack of relationships for recruit/current players at South Carolina and auburn and see what staff does with their own recruited QB. We have really good talent at offensive skill positions and OL. Defense should have most guys back. It would not surprise me to look better next yr under pruitt

Too many inexplicable losses under Pruitt. If you can get a major upgrade at HC you do it now. This time next year there will be more than the usual level of openings all over college football. We can’t compete for and land a great HC against the rabble.

F it. I’ll say it. I’ll welcome Gus.

Guys, think we need to separate "better than what we have" from "good or great."

If we are going to spend $15M, the floor has to be "very good" not just better than Beldar Cornbreak, Botch and Orange Pants. Not trying to be disrespectful but using those as a reminder that we convinced ourselves each of those was better than his predecessor but in the end we are still up Schitt's Creek with another mediocre coach. This floor has to be "very good by all measurable standards."

While the OC/QB Coach at Auburn Gus had 'em averaging 33.3 PPG, they went 8-5, 14-0, 8-5. Won the SEC & National title and Cam got a Heisman.

The season Gus leaves Gene is 3-9 and they drop to 18.7 ppg, the very next year Gus is the HC and they go 12-2 win the SEC again and play for another National title while averaging 39.5 ppg

I'm with you on that for now however if Pruitt comes back next year then he will be directly attached to Fulmer

I don't think that will be true unless we find out with some certainty that the resources were available and the power brokers were open to a change from a list of affordable candidates. I am not sure either is or is not true at this time. Have I missed some real updates? Every school has it's own set of financial abilities at this time. It is possible that the powers would prefer to have an expanded list of candidates that would be made available with a lot of fans in the seats next year.... full or not.... don't have a clue what COVID will allow nor the conviction of season ticket holders to show up.

I have to wonder if Cristobal played them for a raise from Oregon.

When they make the Gus firing official, Cristobal is the first on many of their insiders' lists - then it comes out Cristobal is currently in contract talks with Oregon.

Kevin Steele is a nightmare scenario for them - why wouldn't they just hire Napier instead if they are that low?

One advantage we have with AU being a week ahead of us is the possibility of freeze getting an SEC job or Kiffin moving in conference after one year is getting played through the national media so the awkwardness can get sorted out.

Auburn must have someone they think is better than Gus lined up that is still playing. You just don't fire someone that you owe that much money, has beat Saban and went to national championship games, unless that is true. Right?
