Recruiting Football Talk VIII

I don't think so. They're allowed to see what personnel the offense has, then substitute accordingly.

Now I'm not sure if they had already substituted after seeing our personnel, then decided to change their mind. That would be on them. But initially it looked to me that when our players and coaches returned to the sideline, Bama realized the 11 we left on the field were different than they expected, so they wanted to sub.
They looked so rattled. It’s glorious.

Total transparency… I didn’t even know Josh Heupel was a head coach.

I was not thrilled. Also pretty numb by that point.
I said for years that we needed an offensive guru to spark some life back into the program. I was happy we got one but didn't expect him to be as complete of a coach as he is. And certainly not to be 6-1 in year 4 with a dominant defense and a struggling offense. With an 11-2 season and NY6 Bowl win already under his belt.
I was neutral. I thought he rode Scott frosts success and recruiting, so he wasn't as proven as his record suggested. But I definitely thought we could do worse. But I was definitely numb too, I just wanted to regularly win 8 again and be competitive in a couple of the losses, that's all I cared about.
I think the 2020 6-4 COVID season hurt his stock a lot. It made it look like he was just trending down from what he inherited from Frost and would be on the chopping block in a year or two.

Can they not write letters? My brother joined the Air National Guard and was at least allowed to write letters. I sent him printouts of the VolQuest War Room so he could keep track of off season developments. The big news at the time was Daniel McCullers committing. Anyway, the rules may be different since he was joining the reserves.
Communication is way more relaxed than it once was. From the tales of my father in law who was a former DS the physical stuff changed a ton too. Some of that was likely needed. They have a huge crack down on SA and SH now for example. Zero tolerance.

This is correct. During the break, the offense has like 40 players on the field—that’s where there is room to get in a big circle and talk. It counts as a substitution for the defense because they can’t know which 11 will stay on. The refs are supposed to hold the snap like they would after a sub. They didn’t, and that is their mistake. Bama should have had time to sub.

But a player can’t run off and then back on. That’s on Bama, and was rightly flagged.

As for the whole flopping thing, that’s clearly a bad look. Even Bama fans are ashamed, and rightly so. I wonder if it should have been an unsportsmanlike flag under the rules as they are. I also wondered, watching in real time, if he flopped after the snap such that the play should have been allowed to continue.
It was also illegal substitution because the Alabama player didn't run inside the numbers when coming from the sideline.

On the play, the ref stood over the ball initially while both teams started to line up. Bama made no attempt to substitute until after he left the ball and took his position.

For some unknown reason, Bama had personnel confusion and tried to cheat their way out of it. Tennessee didn't do anything tricky. I'm glad the refs made the right call.

I didn’t see the ref standing over the ball. If that happened, then I was wrong about the refs messing up initially. Cheers.

The first sentence of your second paragraph is what I suggested. Bama was running a guy off the field and then that was the guy that turned around and was pushed.

We brought 11 guys onto the field without deception, and Bama had the opportunity to match. But for some reason, they then decided to bring the guy off from the middle of the field, and it was clear they were confused. That’s on them.

He was right - they have a very strong RV following and usually show up! There were only two ‘Bama RVs this year on the 3 RV decks at the Civic Coliseum. None of the very large Class As showed up unless they found another place to park.
There were relative few Bammers and they were very subdued, before the game. One really drunk Bammer did say roll tide to me, I answered anchor down.

That's good he picked something marketable on the outside. My Granddaddy was in the 1st Division in WWII. He always said, "If you want to be dirty and hungry join the Army, if you want to stay pretty clean and eat choose the Navy, them Navy boys eat good. If you want to be in the service but don't want to be in the military join the Air Corps."
My son scored a 95 on the ASVAB and I told him he can choose anything and to pick something that is marketable in the civilian world. He chose infantry, I asked why he chose infantry, he said, "I wanted to find out what it was really like." He found out.

Not gonna lie - it’s gonna be kind of disappointing if all this hype and momentum only leads to commitments from two in state three stars.

Something in the Oklahoma game got Nico skiddish.. the hit in the Bama game woke him up
He was probably feeling enormous pressure to live up to his hype, recruiting ranking, and NIL deal. Especially after everything came so easily against lesser competition. More concerned about not making a mistake than just playing football. I think his mindset has adjusted now and he realizes we can still win even if he makes mistakes and that he will never be perfect. So why not just go play and stop overthinking things.

If I was a betting man , I would bet there's a lot of Vols fans wishing they would've kept their comments about the hire to themselves.
Agree.
However, the list of previous "bad" hires were long and distinguished......and from the jump, the hire looked iffy.

Im so glad it's worked out.
