Recruiting Football Talk VIII

That would be a weird rule. What if both teams are red? I think the officials would be confused.

You rarely see it. I believe the rule is a holdover from the days of black and white TV broadcasts. Back then you needed one team to wear a solid color and another team to wear white for the home viewer to differentiate. At least that is the urban legend.

That’s why I didn’t understand Deboer being upset. I saw it twice, and I didn’t see us change personnel after bringing on the ones after the break. The announcers made a suggestion that we substituted, but I told the people I was watching with that it was after a break and why would we substitute?
From my understanding by the rules official in the booth at the time, the change of possession is considered a substitution. Sounded like after the offense goes on the field, the defense gets to see what they put on the field and substitute accordingly.

If that's the case, I never knew that.

That’s what Matt Austin said during the broadcast. The defense is allowed to substitute because “the defense doesn’t know what 11 they’re going to send out onto the field until they send them out.” (Not an exact quote but close enough)

I think both teams can wear their primary colors if the home team agrees. Otherwise it’s a 15 yard penalty at the beginning of the game.
I believe the rule is that if the visitor wears the 'wrong' color, the penalty is losing a timeout. The way the home team 'agrees' is to waste their timeout at the beginning of the game.

At least, that's the way I saw it go down 10-15 years ago.

I think the officials need to be able to differentiate. I know in high school it's part of the rule book.

USF was a combined 4-29 in the 3 seasons before Golesh. He went 7-6 last year. He’s not on the hot seat.

I get your point, but I think it depends on the school. You automatically turned down some opportunities, but some G5 schools are good opportunities. If you aren’t careful, that P4 opportunity may not come either.
Sure. I’m not saying he is on the hot seat, but that career advancement in this case probably won’t happen until you make that smaller school Uber successful. Can it happen? Sure. Is it likely to happen at this point in CFB? No. So, instead of going to a school with limited resources, limited fan buy in, and limited talent pool, why not stay a coordinator until a job at a big time school presents itself?

Ya, NIL creates parity at the top, but it probably does hurt the USF of the world.

Can they not write letters? My brother joined the Air National Guard and was at least allowed to write letters. I sent him printouts of the VolQuest War Room so he could keep track of off season developments. The big news at the time was Daniel McCullers committing. Anyway, the rules may be different since he was joining the reserves.
In five months we got 2 or 3 letters the size of index cards. He was 11 Bravo (infantry) and the army is really hard on them during Basic, I know it is a little less intense for other MOS and branches of the service. But it was really like he ceased to exist. The first thing we did when he graduated was go to a sports bar and watch Alabubba destroy us, didn't really mind we got whipped.

Watching 2022 vs. 2024 Tennessee / Bama highlights.

That Hooker -> Hyatt combination was absolutely ridiculous. #5's consistency on those wide open throws was something else. If Heupel can get Nico even halfway there we're talking about an elite offense again.

2024's athleticism on defense is on a totally different level, my goodness.
- BY / Baron / Bumphus vs. Pearce / Josephs / West / Bailey
- Beasley / Banks vs. Telander / Carter / Perry (Linebackers are sneaky good this year)
- Slaughter / Hadden vs. McCoy / Gibson

Watch the 2022 game and the defense looks like molasses compared to the guys we're watching this year. That recruiting paying off big time.

I think the issue was that the flopper left the field and then returned.

22 offense + 24 defense = undefeated Natty Champs.

Arguably the best team of all time.

This is correct. During the break, the offense has like 40 players on the field—that’s where there is room to get in a big circle and talk. It counts as a substitution for the defense because they can’t know which 11 will stay on. The refs are supposed to hold the snap like they would after a sub. They didn’t, and that is their mistake. Bama should have had time to sub.

But a player can’t run off and then back on. That’s on Bama, and was rightly flagged.

As for the whole flopping thing, that’s clearly a bad look. Even Bama fans are ashamed, and rightly so. I wonder if it should have been an unsportsmanlike flag under the rules as they are. I also wondered, watching in real time, if he flopped after the snap such that the play should have been allowed to continue.

Essentially the G5 schools become a defacto farm system for the P4. It is great opportunity for players not highly recruited out of high school to prove themselves and move up, but it is difficult for coaches and schools. Binding NIL and scholarship agreements will restrict the unlimited movement and deter school from not holding up their end of the agreement. I think in the end it will all work itself out, the transition is very chaotic.

It makes sense- just like a defense seeing if the punt team or the offense is coming on the field for a 4th and 1. However, the defense is able to match the offensive personnel, but why was Bama running a player off the field? That means they didn't like their matching and needed to change personnel, which makes the call a correct one. That's on Bama.
