Recruiting Discussion

Barnes' parting words at TX led me to believe he won't be satisfied retiring without a Nattie. I see 5 more years being his minimum.
Wouldn't surprise me if his 19 recruiting class was top 25.

I'll say this much, judging off of his Twitter account, his teammates seem to like and respect him quite a bit and he doesn't come off like an uneducated fool in his own tweets. He was sure to thank Richmond and their fans/coaches/staff for his opportunity.

Good to possibly pick up a guy that will be missed by his former teammates. Hopefully he comes in and contributes.

We could do much worse, I guess.

I agree, could be worse. Was really hoping to pick up a freshman guard this cycle though.

The last two years grad transfers were really needed imo because our team was so young. Now we will be adding a freshman guard next year who will have 1 less year to develop before stepping in for Bone.

That's a good point. It definitely happens because you see kids decommit sometimes once they know they have other options that they prefer. But I guess it doesn't happen publicly like in football.

I forgot about him going to Hargrave. That should be good for him.

For someone relatively new to B-ball recuruting, what’s the significance in Hargrave? Prestigious HS program with good competition?

Discussion about possible Rick Barnes missteps was not allowed. Now I just sing his praises like the rest. True believer.

I love Barnes man. I’ve been on the bandwagon since day one. Still doesn’t make him above criticism. Especially valid criticism. Just cause your successful (even then the mans only had one successful year here) doesn’t mean you can’t be criticized. Just more take what ziti says a mile BS, that I’ve come accustom to over the years here. I don’t agree with you on a lot of things, but I will always be on the side of being able to critique.

It's just too hard to have legitimate discussions about anything slightly negative. I mean right now we are looking for a grad transfer and hoping a 2019 kid reclassifies to take a RS and yet there is no one saying anything about that. We have zero commits. Not allowed to question that.

Saying "he's got to do better" is not allowed. If you suggest that a class in the future is important you're told that no its really not. The treatment Barnes gets on here is like he's went to 3 straight tourneys and not 1 out of 3.

We had a great season and I love that. I'm excited about our team. I think Barnes did great. Obviously he has hit on some evaluations and he's done a good job of developing. There's no denying that. I was of the belief that he's still got to do better on the trail. The response to that take is "oh, so you're saying it was a fluke!?!" No. I'm saying it's not sustainable. Heard Jerry Meyer say the same thing. Then we have to go through all these programs that don't recruit well and sustain success. Guess what? They all still recruit better than us!!! We seem to be trying more and more with highly ranked kids which would suggest Barnes is trying to up the talent level which is great. That's what I said we should do. But I get told "oh he's always targeted guys like that" which is misleading. He's focused efforts on more highly ranked guys this year than ever. But... still not landing them. Can't question that either though. Told to be patient and that Barnes doesn't need 1 and dones, yada yada. Just take my stance and twist it and accuse me of hating or whatever.

Just easier to say what the board says. Barnes is doing a great job recruiting. April thru June is a great time to address the needs of the coming year and future years.

Took some time to read the Richmond message boards. Essentially all were very saddened that he was leaving and blaming Chris Mooney (their coach) for program turmoil. Alot of people were saying they would be A10 contenders with him and now are saying they should be average again without him as he is their best perimeter defender and an electrifying player to the lineup. Many thought he'd be an excellent 6th man at the P6 level.

I think one of the insightful posts came from a guy name Spiderman, basically saying he played out of position at Richmond:

"my opinion of Khwan's transfer.

I don't think it's a lack of belief in the team or coach. I don't think it's wanting to dance, or frustrations with losing. we had one losing season.

I think Khwan wants a shot at playing pro ball. if that's the end game, how will he benefit from another year here?

to play pro ball he has to play point. he's absolutely quick enough and athletic enough. but there are two problems here. one, he's not playing the point. he gets to handle some but he's more often in a catch and shoot situation and he's not a shooter. two, even if he was playing point ... our point isn't a ball dominator. with Khwan's athletic ability he should be handling, getting into the lane, and coming around ball screens. the ball has to be in his hands.

what would you expect from Khwan if he stayed next season. mostly the same? heck of a player. I think we win more games. but maybe he averages 12 ppg? maybe 3 assists? what can he show that he hasn't already? the ONLY reason he would stay is to try to win with his teammates. but it doesn't help him reach his ultimate goals. "

He may not step in and be the all-SEC PG we're hoping for, but I think he'd be a valuable addition to the team.

I love seeing this, and from film analysis I've done on him and other things I've read, I think this makes sense. He can actually drive to the bucket and is a great defender. Sounds like exactly what the Vols need at PG since Bone doesn't consistently go to the rim and isn't the best defender. Very excited to see what Fore can do if the Vols get him.

Rick Barnes has earned our trust.

Whether we want to admit it or not all of us are wrong more than we're right and Ill gladly admit that Ive been wrong on several of our players.

If Barnes thinks they can help who am I to disagree?

An amatuer opinion tells me we need another PG if we prefer Turner on the wing and this grad transfer fits Barnes's system in him being defensive minded.

I get it.

Keon Johnson, shooting guard '20. Picked up an offer from the Vols. He plays at Webb School in Bell Buckle, just outside of Shelbyville. His mother is a former Miss Tn basketball winner, Conswella Sparrow.

Appears the nerds behind the computers love him. Top 100 player in both Rivals and 247

From a big Richmond fan...

“He can play PG and that’s where he wants to play, wants to play pro ball and knows to do so it’s at PG. Mooney has always played him off ball in catch and shoot spots and that is not his strength. Not great from 3 but is lights out from the elbow in, and is a beast defensively.”

Just watched some film.... now I’m not saying he’s that type of player, but defensively he reminds me of josh Richardson. He’s everywhere
