Now IMO elite recruiting can make an average coach darn good.
Calipari fits that mold and Barnes as well IMO.
But when I say elite recruiting i am saying 5star guys on a regular basis
I understand what you saying and I certainly follow recruiting but IMO programs that aren't able to recruit the 5star talents are made with great X/O coaching.
IMO there isn't a big reason to get bent out of shape if your team finished ranked 20th or if it's finished 40th in the recruiting team rankings. Not much difference at all if the coach is worth his salt.

Dang how bad were the classes in 07 and 09
For the average to drop all the way down to 33?
Seems odd math
They were 87th and 66th. Basically, they loaded up with big classes with 4 and 5 stars in 06, 08 and 10 and took small classes in the odd years. Also doesn't count that they got J. P. Prince and Tyler Smith as 5 and 4 star transfers in the 2007 class. If those guys had been counted as stars, that would have been another top 20 class at least.
Rob Lewis saying he thinks we land Fulk and Williams and save one for spring where we pursue Fernando pretty aggressively. Said he understands the grumblings from fans on this class, but that something has to be said for these all being guys Tennessee evaluated and offered early in the spring. Said Barnes doesn't care about rankings at all obviously, and trust his evaluations as much as any coach he's seen, they really truly like these guys. This isn't a case where they wanna sign 4 so that's what they're gonna do, these are guys they identified early on, offered and made priorities.
Perhaps he put that many into the league with great recruiting classes based on services rankings
That's my impression anyway
I'm gonna trust the coach that will be a hall of fame inductee knows what he's doing when he offers a kid a scholarship or makes a decision to not recruit a kid.
"Said Barnes doesn't care about rankings at all obviously, and trust his evaluations as much as any coach he's seen"
Not exactly what these guys want to hear
Isaiah Taylor who was projected as a lottery pick last season prior to his injury was an unranked 3* by rivals, didn't have a 247 national ranking, and was outside the top 300 by 247 composite rankings fwiw
