Not really a risk. You take a chance on him because he is a top 20 pick and would be a significant upgrade if you can land him and he is cleared to play.

Agree. Tennessee doesn't get a ton of chances to swing for the fences in basketball. Have to go for it when the opportunity presents itself.

Yeah, but it's kinda useless to have him, and him not be eligible. Id much rather have somebody that can play.

We have two legit bigs right now that will be here next year, (if Kasongo leaves 1.) and that would be Alexander. If Rick was brought here to keep us stable, then we need to have guys that will be here more than one year. I'd love to have Omer, but I'm just not sold he will be here.

He's definitely pissed off his coach, in digging through tweets in Turkish and using google translate lol, it's been known over there for months apparently Duke and Tennessee were after Yurtseven. His club offered him a 5 year contract making him a pro, and he apparently declined the offer and is now in Toronto at the BWB NBA camp, that's what has his coach irked.

What will become interesting is what did he really receive for benefits, and just what story does his coach tell the NCAA? He's informed his coach he's transferring to a US college, his coach in a fury says he's ineligible, is his coach gonna lie to the NCAA and say he was paid more or received impermissible benefits? Will his coach cooperate?

Not sure anyone has a clue right now either way, as expected with a foreign product, but you'd have to think Omer is receiving info from somewhere if he's turning down that offer and heading to the states?

If memory serves me correct, one of the assistant coaches (think Lanier) missed a road game this year early during SEC play. Maybe he was visiting Omer...

How could this even be worth the risk? Why would Barnes risk another 3 years in the dumpster?

Not really. If it's between swinging for the fences for a potential 1st rounder and maybe striking out for a year if he is eventually ruled ineligible versus signing a Willie Carmichael type talent that takes up a scholarship for possibly 4 years with little return, then I think it's a no-brainer.

We can't moan and complain about a lack of talent (post talent to be specific) and then play it safe when a golden opportunity presents itself.

Maybe, I don't know. I hope we can get him.

Famous last words.
In his third year it's exposed that he took money.
Back to the dumpster.
Doubt Barnes would be interested in ending his career on a such a note.

So if you'd love to have him why is he too big of a risk?

That who took money? If the kid is ineligible then he's ineligible, he will just not play for any college, see Enes Kanter.

I really can't believe this is even a debate.

According to VQ Lanier has been overseas to see him, Tennessee has put in a lot of time on him and they firmly believe that he will be eligible fwiw. Duke, Tennessee and Utah seem to be 3 most involved, Tennessee definitely is in the thick of it.

You're the one quoting a coach saying he's ineligible. Is that grades or because he's taken money for pro ball?
This is Tennessee. we get the max for BQs.

If Barnes can't compete in conventional recruiting he needs to hang it up.

Why is this being spun that he can't recruit the traditional way? I want Barnes to go after the best. Wherever they are in the world. This guy is a potential top 15 pick in his draft. Go get him Barnes

Huh?

Did Kentucky get penalized AT ALL for signing Enes Kanter?

I sure wouldn't have minded having Sabonis from Gonzaga, would you?

What? You wanna take a guy from Turker, what's wrong with you? Don't take guys from foreign countries, don't take guys who have ever made less than an "A", don't take guys who haven't performed minimum 40 hours community service, and don't take any inner city kids either...lets see how many "5 star" talents are left to recruit.
