'25 Portal Thread

Yeah, he gets no sympathy from me. Every coach deals with stupid **** in the portal era.
Honestly, I don't think Heupel is a fit for this new era of portal football. Heupel is a fish out of water. It's not a college game anymore. It's a cut throat, professional sport now. Today's game is perfect for guys like Kiffin and Pearl. Heupel is a square peg in a round hole.

Perfect post.

I'll add this, and no one will agree with me, but this is a do or die year for Heupel. I'm not saying he is going to get fired anytime soon, but if we struggle this season, it will be HARDDDDDDDD to come back from, especially with his lack of portal recruiting.

Agreed.

We either win ten games this year or Danny White ought to give seeeeroius consideration to shutting the football program down altogether.

Heup makes like 8 figures but doesnt want to spend “too much” on the portal lmaooo

Yeh good luck with that mindset. Youre ab to get lapped by teams you thought you were ahead of currently. Teams like UF, SCar, OU, AU. All bc you dont even try to adapt.

Barely got enough players to run adequate practices in the Spring and it still looks the same.

I'm not saying it happens anytime soon, but the lack of attention to the portal is going to end up biting him at some point. Especially with the way it affects players leaving us. It's like we're not even trying to replace the players that are leaving. We have some serious depth issues in certain spots and in some spots we have some serious questions of unproven players. That's a big risk to take to just assume all is good.

How many open spots do we have

Heupel is a great x’s and o’s coach, no doubt the best we’ve had since Fulmer (prime fulmer years). But he obviously struggles bringing in the jimmy and the joe’s. A lot of the offensive guys we’ve brought in were misses. Defensively, our recruiting, evals, and development are night and day better than offense. You could see elements of that in 2023, last year it really started to show, this year remains to be seen, but given the fact we are replacing a record breaking rb, 4/5 ol starters plus the 2 key rollers, we don’t know who our qb is, we have paper thin depth at wr, it’s easy to look at this season and think our offense will take a major step back. At this point id be shocked if we add any transfer, and im sorry but that is a huge red flag on the staff. It’s clear there is a major issue with recruiting, particularly offensively. Everyone keeps screaming “DONATE TO SPYE DONATE TO THE VOLCUB” and we do that, yet our nil is still mid. Then our AD throws on a 10% talent fee, but we haven’t brought in the extra talent

My 2 cents on CJH and portal.
Ive read in several places that OSU had a $20 million dollar plus roster, while UTs was around $11-14. Everyone wants to drive a Corvette but we’re on Chevette budget.
CJH wants a (WR-DT-CB) we offer $1.2-1.5 someone else offers $2 mill what’s CJH to do. Coaches, not just ours either, are limited by what their NIL budget can do. Plus CJH has an added obstacle of scholarship limits imposed by NCAA.
I’d like to see him operate with no limits in either place.
Just my 2 cents.

Turds, Cocks, Barn all found offensive players.

So we’re at 76 or 77? Bc we’ll only carry 82 or 83 this season due to still dealing with scholarship reductions
Those #’s I gave were assuming charles and thomas stays btw, so assuming we can only hold 82 scholarship players because of the reductions, we can still add 5 players. That’s why im scratching my head at the lack of portal activity

Legions of the miserable

We’re at a level of football now that we have not seen in 20+ years. There’s a significant number of you who can’t remember what winning was like before CJH got here. And he doesn’t go after the players you think he should so he must be terrible. Someone was even talking about his previous team. How are those guys doing without him?

counterpoint. ive been a fan since mid 80's, when by brain allowed recalling sitting inside Neyland. Its remembering the winning, and competitiveness that reminds - we arent SC, Missouri, or even Tamu.
