Please stop talking about the buyout

It's a pretty standard buyout/ guarantee- whatever you want to call it.

If he does ever leave due to being fired without cause, I seriously doubt he will immediately be hired for a head or assistant coaching position making north of $2 million per year.

So if he gets a job, then great for UT. Unfortunately we don't have a great track record with this type of agreement. See Jerry Green, Buzz Peterson, Kiffin, Dooley, Delmonico, Raleigh, etc

Kiffin got us on the flip side - his buyout was extremely low and USC gladly paid it.

The point is, the two aren't synonymous. And there probably would be a buyout but from what I hear, it's more around the 4 million mark.

Your confusing 2 separate agreements / events.

$4 million is what Butch (or his new employer) would owe UT if he left for another job.

$2 million per remaining contract year is what UT owes Butch if he is fired without cause.

Touché! I just read that as well. Again, that was based on what i heard, not what i read. But still, the language is not a straight 2 million a year without obligation from butch.

And just what would he be analyzing? Certainly not football. Maybe how to change a diaper or something.

My point was that if he doesn't get a job coaching football then we owe him $2 million per remaining contract year.

Based on how he leaves here, he may or may not decide to continue coaching.

Okay so if 2 million is what butch has, what is the rest of the staff. If it is 2 million total and we are still paying for Dooley and staff it will be very tough to hire a new coach for 2016. We would roughly be paying between 12-15 million for football coaches in 2016.

Hart should be banished for this atrocity

I think the number goes to 10 million in February, after signing day. It will continue to drop 2 million a year until the contract expires. I just don't see it happening unless something criminal goes down. What is possible at the end of this season is that Hart is gone which would probably be a positive given his track record. If we do get a new AD he or she needs to be out from under the thumb of Cheek,
Which means either getting rid of Cheek or moving the AD back under the President's direct control. I don't know if there's the will to take that last step but it's probably necessary if we really want a chance at attracting an A list coach next time.

UT will not buyout butch anytime soon---10-12 million---they don't have that kind of cash laying around unless some rich booster donates it.

Thank you! These idiots spouting off about big boosters donating big bucks to give Butch Jones....when has that happened????? Didn't with Dooley and EVERYONE wanted that ****ass fired!

Jones took over a program coming off a 3 yr death penalty. He had 4 good OL who were all leaving, a good MLB and nothing else. No running backs, No WRs, no DL or secondary worth a crap. A decent 3* Qb who couldn't run a lick, no tight ends and the kicking game sucked....oh and instate high school coaches hated UT...other than that he had a great job!

I read "including but not limited to coaching" but I'm no lawyer. The date on the contract that he is paid thru is Feb 28, 2019. That's a little over 6 million not close to 12.

Butch will get another year. I'm not a fan of Dave Hart, but I'm willing to bet he regrets extending Butch's contract. Butch will be fired after next season. If fans truly want him gone, they need to quit buying tickets.

the contract was extended to the end of Feb 2021. As stated numerous times, the buyout is $2M/year, prorated for partial years. If Butch gets canned Feb 2016, there's 5 full years left on the contract, so UT would be on the hook for $10M. But, that is not paid in a lump sum (it's paid monthly through the end of the contract term), and Butch's income from subsequent employment offsets the per-year amount that UT basically has to guarantee. Butch has to use reasonable and diligent efforts to find "comparable" employment or an "other paid services position". The contract gives collegiate or NFL assistant or head coaching jobs as examples of comparable employment, but the contract does not limit it to that. Plus, there's that "other paid services position" language in there.

The contract says that Butch must try to mitigate UT's obligation to pay by finding comparable employment. If Butch got a gig making $2M a year as an analyst, UT would definitely say that this is a "paid services position" that should mitigate their obligation to pay. I can't imagine someone paying to hear Butch talk about analytics. I guess the point is that the buyout isn't as unsurmountable as it seems.

That being said, Dave Hart knows that his own fate is tied to Butch's, so there's no way Dave is firing Butch. I can't see Dave getting the ax this year, either.
