I like your stuff normally 99 but I disagree here.
Whether or not it stems from an era that two teams were dominant, rivalries have to start somewhere. But rivalries are subject to the fan. People don't think Alabama is much of a rival but I grew up close to the border so there was a lot of hatred. I never saw Kentucky as a rival but I'm sure fans along the border hate Kentucky. I never saw Kentucky as rival because we always won and I'm sure that's the case now with FL and Bama fans viewing us.
You are right. Florida leads the series 28-20, but in my mind, it wasn't a rivalry game before Spurrier. I wasn't around when Dickey bolted for Florida, but between 1977 and 1990, UT and Florida only played twice. Also, some UT fans just remember the 1990 game UT won 45-3 and think Florida was bad before the Spurrier era. We don't remember Florida leading the conference in 1984 and 1985. Probably because they were ineligible both years. You sure about that?
UF won both games against UT in the 80s, went 2-2 in the four games played in the 70s, and we won the only game against each other in the 60s.
But you guys totally owned us from 1916-1955.
I’m back and excited for another season. Anyone have thoughts on this quote?
I have never thought of the game as a "rivalry" and said many times why.
At one time, the two teams were very good and the game had lots of significance. So, it was built up to be a rivalry. The same way the Patriots-Colts had significance and was made to be a rivalry.
But, Indianapolis-New England is not a rivalry and neither is Florida-Tennessee

Alabama is our rival. Florida is just another game on the schedule.I have never thought of the game as a "rivalry" and said many times why.
