Paul Finebaum

It is what it is. We had the east and blew it. What is the definition of compete anyway? By my standards, we competed last year. Probably will in 2017. We need to win to shut these talking blowhards up.

Well, those blowhards are not gonna shut up, they get paid too well for that to happen. I may not be running to the shed for a pitchfork and torch, but I am also past excuses. Last year fell short of the goal and the reasons why are the infuriating part. However, I am hoping what was needed to meet expectations now has their names on office doors in the practice facility.

And if I had a dog half as ugly as Finebaum, I would shave it's ass and teach it to walk backwards.

Slimebaum has been trolling our fanbase for years. And why not? It is super easy! (See: any of the previous 7 pages)

Surely you don't take any of this seriously? It's the summer- college football media is in "LOOK AT MEEE" mode. Rule #1 of the Internet is: don't feed the trolls. Don't break rule #1

These people (sports editorializers) are doing the thing they get paid to do. AND IT WORKS EVERY TIME!!! I'm tired..just tired...come on football season...just start already...JMO

Saban took over a Bama program about to be hit with NCAA sanctions iirc. Bama was in poor shape....not saying it was quite as bad as what Butch took over, but Saban took over a Bama program in disrepair and won a freaking national title in year 3.....while Jones is still struggling to win a bad/down SEC East in year 5.

And Finebaum is 100% right, Tennessee should absolutely be strongly competing for the SEC East every year. Unfortunately, we were effectively out of it last year after game 8 vs SCar.

He was actually playing in a "semi-final" game in year 2. Bama was ranked #1 going into the SEC CG that season and UF beat them.

For the love of all that is good, will people stop comparing Butch, or any coach for that matter, to Nick Saban. What he has done at Bama has never been done before (at least in the modern era) and will probably never be done again.

Rake Finebaum over the coals all you to he ain't gonna sugarcoat his comments.

Yeah I remember when the Bowles "traitor" claim came out and he said it was the most egregious allegation he's covered in his career. Always wanted to ask him if he was on hiatus when Dave Bliss tried to paint the murdered Patrick Dennehey as a drug dealer to cover up the money he'd been given...and that was recorded! Finebaum's a glorified Skip Bayless. He flushed the last of his integrity along with the other contents of his stomach after a routine Bear colonic.

“[Fans have] very mixed reaction [to Butch Jones],” Finebaum said. “I know one thing, Butch Jones is very likely to survive this season, short of a disaster. But how does this season play out? He’s done a really good job lowering expectations, which I think is what he wants to do.

“What frustrated me on Monday is this: ‘We inherited a very difficult situation. We inherited a program that was 2-14 against Power 5.’ That’s ridiculous. In your fifth year, you shouldn’t be talking about your first year. You shouldn’t be going through a transition. Alabama isn’t the example everyone wants to hear, but Nick Saban, after five years, had won a national championship and was about to win another one.”

Love him or hate him, he's absolutely right. Now I think any comparison to what Saban has done at Alabama is little unfair because, let's be honest, no one has done what Saban is doing at Bama in the modern era. But his premise of lowered expectations is spot on. Jones wants, and often seems to demand, credit for achieving basic goals of bowl game appearances and 8 win seasons. The sad fact is that for a large portion of this fan base, it's worked. Finebaum also had a comment for them.

"When I hear a school like the University of Tennessee say we’re happy with 8-4 and we don’t want to play Alabama — not specifically the university saying it but the apparatus of fans and media. I just shake my head,” Finebaum said. “Tennessee football is a major entity. If you say ‘8-4 is okay. We couldn’t find anyone better,’ then you’re losing it."

“Tennessee shouldn’t be happy heading to a bowl game. Tennessee ought to be contending for the SEC East every year.”

Now I suspect many of those content with the state of the program were too young to remember how much success Tennessee enjoyed throughout the 90's and even the early 2000's. It would then make sense for those whose only measurement of success is that Butch is better than Dooley. For the rest of us, it's time for him to put up or shut up.

Butch has to be one of the worst speakers in college football history. He does say some of the dumbest things imaginable and he needs to be called out. It is year 5 and stop talking about being young and what "we" inherited. It's put up or shut up.

Yeah this is from several days ago. Someone else already posted it and it's already been added to the merge thread.

All the 'happy to stay at 8 and 4 and don't want anything more than making a bowl game' bulsht.

I'm not even one of those sold on butch but I know better than that crap. How many years have passed since I heard that man blaming Tennessee for Alabama cheating and giving Bama his full support? Some things never change.

Edit: it wasn't merged, it's still on the front page at the bottom. Hopefully, this one will be merged to the bottom of it soon.

I agree. Like him or not he is spot on in his assessment. I could name several that are in that camp, the one Finebaum is talking about.

They are the ones coming after me on a constant basis.

Lol, you can barely remember which of your screen names you're using.

Everyone here wants to win, there's just disagreement on the who and how to get us there.

It's a rambling completely built on a false premise. And if the premise is false, the entirety is useless.

Sure there are a few on here that have shared some lowered expectations, but CBJ and 121 seen to only have 1 thing on their mind and that is to win. "Win today and win tomorrow.", that covers it.

121 can only prepare at this point. They can't win a game until the day of the game.

The fruit if their labor will be seen starting Sept. 4th and not ending until Jan. 8th.

I expect to beat bama and all the other scrub teams on our schedule.

I like our chance.

Finebaum is right about one thing for sure - Butch has lowered fan's expectations. 8/9 wins is now a solid year, and it is for most programs. There was a time that anything less than 10 wins was a disappointment.

Butch had to repair a lot of relationships and restock a lot of talent. He's not Saban not even close but he has Tennessee headed in a much better direction than it has been. If Butch doesn't start winning the east and at least competing soon, Tennessee will probably make a change. We're in a much better situation and a large part of that is due to Jones.

I think Dooley did that and CBJ is raising the standard. "Win today, win tomorrow." Sounds simple to me that 121 expects to win every day.

How many fans on here have posted they expect to lose to bama? Too many. Sounds like a fan problem rather than a team problem.
