[Fans have] very mixed reaction [to Butch Jones], Finebaum said. I know one thing, Butch Jones is very likely to survive this season, short of a disaster. But how does this season play out? Hes done a really good job lowering expectations, which I think is what he wants to do.
What frustrated me on Monday is this: We inherited a very difficult situation. We inherited a program that was 2-14 against Power 5. Thats ridiculous. In your fifth year, you shouldnt be talking about your first year. You shouldnt be going through a transition. Alabama isnt the example everyone wants to hear, but Nick Saban, after five years, had won a national championship and was about to win another one.
Love him or hate him, he's absolutely right. Now I think any comparison to what Saban has done at Alabama is little unfair because, let's be honest, no one has done what Saban is doing at Bama in the modern era. But his premise of lowered expectations is spot on. Jones wants, and often seems to demand, credit for achieving basic goals of bowl game appearances and 8 win seasons. The sad fact is that for a large portion of this fan base, it's worked. Finebaum also had a comment for them.
"When I hear a school like the University of Tennessee say were happy with 8-4 and we dont want to play Alabama not specifically the university saying it but the apparatus of fans and media. I just shake my head, Finebaum said. Tennessee football is a major entity. If you say 8-4 is okay. We couldnt find anyone better, then youre losing it."
Tennessee shouldnt be happy heading to a bowl game. Tennessee ought to be contending for the SEC East every year.
Now I suspect many of those content with the state of the program were too young to remember how much success Tennessee enjoyed throughout the 90's and even the early 2000's. It would then make sense for those whose only measurement of success is that Butch is better than Dooley. For the rest of us, it's time for him to put up or shut up.
