Paul finebaum show

Just asking but, do you really think PF, as biased as he is will talk about UT like he does Bama? IMHO I don't.

Yes I would rather see something on Vandy, Texas A&M or whoever more than I want to have a 4 hour show giving praise to Bama/Auburn.

Tell me what would/is appealing to the Mizzou,TA&M, Vandy or any other SEC school's fanbase with the present format of the PF show. Does he have a following? Yes but primarily just Bama/Auburn fans. ESPN is smart, they are tracking and watching the viewing audience and they will see that it is not widespread and attractive to the total SEC fanbase. Each fanbase is passionate about their team and wants to hear about them, not just Bama/Auburn.

How many fans of another school are gonna pay an up-charge just to get the SEC NETWORK if their team is not getting some coverage.

I don't think he is NEARLY as biased as he is made out to be on here. Sure, they spend a lot more time on Bama/Auburn right now because both of those fan bases are really high right now plus they have been successful on the field recently. Thus high ratings. But he's not simply sunshine pumping for their camps. More often than not, some irrational caller will call in spewing God knows what and PF is the one left speaking reasonably.

Tennessee is getting some good time on there lately and damn if it isn't positive stuff. Tennessee is actually getting more time than most others probably. It's because we are on the rise. Media time is going to rise and fall as your program trends up or down. If people don't see that when they tune in it's because they are just seeing what they want to.

JMO and say what you will but PF does a pretty good job, like him or not

That is probably one of the most ridiculous things that I have ever heard on here, and that is saying something.

Sorry but I agree with the poster you are insulting.

Any UT grad that refuses to believe Neyland is in the running with Saban and Bryant, has issues.

If Neyland had coached at Bama, P.F. would have named him the greatest.

But Neyland coached at UT so he doesn't even get an honorable mention.

I don't know your definition of betraying your school but this appears high on the list for me.

I was born and raised in Knoxville and have been a Vols fan since I can remember. I have lived in Birmingham for 18 years and have listened to Finebaum the whole time; not everyday, but enough to know what is going on most of the time.

He is brilliant at interviewing guests. He brings out the best in them, and when he wants to he brings out the worst in them. He has a formula for his show, he allows his guests and callers to say anything they want. It has led to some really funny and interesting calls including the infamous Harvey Updike call when he bragged about poisoning the trees at Auburn, and resulted in him going to prison.

He is a homer for Alabama and Auburn in the sense that he lived and worked in Alabama for 30 years so as long as he wanted to get payed he had to be aware of his surroundings. But he has never cut either school any slack. He was brutal on Alabama when they went through the NCAA instigation and probration. I listened and watched as the last few coaches at Auburn were hired and fired. He slow roasted Mike Shula on a firepit for the last 3 months of his tenure at Bama. He did the same to Tuberville and Chizik. He called out Nick Saban when they lost to Auburn in the Iron Bowl on the famous "kicksix" play, said that Saban got out coached. One of his favorite responses to impassioned fans is "I really don't care one way or the other", usually talking about who wins a game or a recruit, which leaves his callers frustrated.

He is an extremely smart person but one thing about him, he is honest almost to a fault. He also does something that few in media do, he will watch and comment on long term trends when few see it coming. That is why you hear love now for the Vols, he sees what is coming with the recruiting success we have had. Now you will hear him say exactly what is being said on Volnation, that we now need to see it translate to wins.

I am not defending him, he doesn't need defending, which is one of the reasons he is so successful. He really doesn't care what most of us think on an individual basis. The paradox though is that he cares very much for his callers. There is a very real contradiction between caring about his show and letting caller say what they want, which he thinks is the reason for the show's success, and telling the same caller he doesn't care what they think. He really means it.

I think you must have missed 5-6 years of history prior to the SEC network.
Finebaum had a NATIONAL radio broadcast on Sirius. People from all over the country would call/listen to his show.
He hasnt been local to just Bama fans in years.
Also, NOBODY pays the upcharge for the SEC network in order to hear Finebaum (not even Bama fans). They pay to watch coverage of the games. Finebaum is just daily filler. I've seen his show just once since the SEC network began.

Rather long post but I like to look at the facts. From the over 100 posts most of you see the PF show for what it is. If too long for you just skip. No harm, no foul.

Nope, haven't missed 5-6 years of history prior to the SEC NETWORK, but you might want to look up some FACTS like I did. Here's a shortcut to the Facts. it's a good, thorough article describing PF and his show. It will give you a lot of FACTS you apparently don't know.

Is ESPN the Destruction of the Paul Finebaum Show

Here's a quick summary of the facts if you don't want to read the article:
- started with Sirius radio 3/12/10
- went off-air with them 1/21/13
- joined ESPN 11/25/13
- did not on air again till August/2014

My favorite quote from this article - "Although the show is going national, Fi*nebaum said he plans to stick to the steady diet of Alabama, Auburn and SEC football issues that have made his show so popular in Birmingham and around the Southeast."

AGAIN ONLY IF YOU ARE INTERESTED INTHE FACTS

Paul Finebaum leaving Birmingham for Charlotte to join ESPN, Wall Street Journal reports | AL.com

And I quote - "His show, which later became known as"The Paul Finebaum Radio Network," quickly became a lightning rod for controversy, but year after year, it was consistently one of the top-rated radio shows in BIRMINGHAM.

In b-ham MWAVolfan. And that is in Alabama. That happens to be where 'Bama/Auburn reside. Do you see the connection yet MWAVolfan?

For some interesting insights to PF and his show.

Paul Finebaum radio show picked up by Sirius XM | AL.com

His ratings while he was with Sirius

Paul Finebaum Radio Show - 4 Radio Show Reviews & Ratings - RadioRatingz.com

Not very impressive on the nationwide show from what I see.

For some who claims - "I've seen his show just once since the SEC network began." you sure seem to think you know a lot about PF and his show.

I have watched/listened to his show enough to say IMHO I don't like it and do think it is good for the SEC Conference. His show, is geared to his 'Bama/Auburn followers just like it has been from the beginning.

I agree with some of the posters who said "if we don't want to watch/listen to his show we can shut it off. "

My point is his show is on the SEC NETWORK. His show should cover the SEC as a whole. Not just talk about 'Bama/Auburn for 80% of his show. I agree with the poster who said the SEC NETWORK could learn a lot from the BIG 10 NETWORK.

My passion/hobby is the SEC. I follow most sports, and have season tickets for football, basketball and baseball.
the SEC NETWORK could do much better for itself than the PF show in it's present format.

While you may be correct that no 1 pays the up-charge just for the PF show that is a part of the ticket price.

Thanks for a great discussion everyone.

That's it. That changed my mind about it. Those two AL.com links and a radio ratings page where 4 random yokels rated it 3 years ago really carries weight ha

Very insightful regarding PF. So would you say he is a mouth piece for the typical Bama fan? I know many Bama fans and they have all critized the same things about Bama Football that PF has criticized in the past. What about Fulmer? Do you know where all that hate and discontent started? Thanks.

I can give you some insight. It was widely reported here in Alabama, not saying it was true, that Phil Fulmer was the "rat" that turned in Alabama for recruiting violations. It was talked about ad nauseum for weeks on his show and Fulmer became not only the hated target of any Alabama fan for any shortcomings in recruiting due to loss of scholarships, but any other problems they had. I mean it was visceral, especially the jokes about "Phil". This went on for a couple of years, then when Tennessee recruiting started to slip and the winning streak was broken Alabama fans could not have been happier.

The last piece fell in place when Saban was hired. Finebaum knew that Tennessee was on a downward trend and that Alabama was coming back in a big way so he kind of let that slip into his show each day and it evolved from there.

As far as being a mouth piece for Alabama or Auburn, listen to what he says very carefully. Seldom does he take a position one way or the other. But he will bring on a guest that says Saban is the "greatest this or that" and then troll all his callers. Or he will do the opposite just to gin up the calls.

But, if and when Alabama starts to decline, he will take out his knife and cut them up using facts and statistics or his guests. Remember, he does not care if his callers are happy or not, just that they call. But he will not misrepresent facts or report untruths. He will stir the pot with rumors though.

I can see the possibility if Tennessee wins the East or the SEC championship, and he gives them the credit they deserve, and he will, that he will be seen by some as a Tennessee homer. If that happens he will be just as happy because all his Bama and Auburn callers will still call in whining, and he will laugh at them, I have listened to him do it over and over again. In the end it's about winning, and getting his callers to call in. If he sticks to his formula I can see him being successful for a long time. He does not care who wins.

That may be, but there will be a lot of gnashing of teeth from VolNation over what Finebaum says about us and what is said on his show about us over the next few years!

Just sayin:):)

No doubt that you have listened to him more than I ever will. But everything you said supports what I have been saying. He really favors/loads his show with Bama/Auburn callers and comments that he makes.

I don't have a problem with his show. My issue is it is on the SEC NETWORK and does not cover the SEC as a whole the way he pumps up Bama/Auburn. I understand he lived in Ala for 30 yrs and was getting paid to cover THEM. ESPN needs to hire someone who is being paid to cover the SEC.

His show being on the SEC NETWORK is like FOX NEWS having a 4 hr show about cooking. Cooking is not a good fit for FOX NEWS. PF show is not a good fit for the SEC NETWORK. ESPN could learn a lot by watching some of the Big10 NETWORK - which is produced by FOX NETWORKS.

You bring up a good point. The SEC network probably should reduce Finebaum's time and broadcast similar shows using homers from radio leads from each school's hometown. It would be more engaging, as many have mentioned, his present show is a UA/Bammer orgy. I'm not into Mom and Dad having 5 teeth between them and also being brother and sister and cousins.

Just a guess about the hate for Fulmer. UT was beating Bama.

So then we will have a show about 3 out of 14 of the teams in the SEC.?!?! Not much of an improvement. We already have radio talk show for UT. We need a show that will showcase all the teams in a good positive way. Do you not think that would appeal to the kids growing up in the SEC. Just another recruiting tool at our disposal.

Everyone entitled to opinion. Those links are just the facts :focus:

OK then. I still don't know what about those "facts" supports your opinion but, OK.

I get that some people don't like the show and would prefer something different. But the way some people carry on about "it sucks because PF is just a slimy bama homer" and "it sucks because the big bad ESPN hates us." :cray: It all just comes off as whining after a while. It's going to feel damn good when we are back on top. People just have to wait for it.

Y'all expend way too much energy analyzing Finebaum.... and that's why he's on the air.

I thought that is 1 of the reasons why VolNation.com is here. This has been a good discussion. PF show is on air because ESPN made a mistake. IMHO. :hi:
GBO

I don't have a problem with his show. I even think he is a great interviewer. My issue is it is on the SEC NETWORK and does not cover the SEC as a whole the way he pumps up Bama/Auburn. That's it for me.

But if FOX NETWORK was to have a SEC NETWORK I would pick it over ESPN in a heartbeat based on how they do the BIG10 NETWORK.

UT is definitely coming on!!!! Only 199 days till " IT'S FOOTBALL TIME IN TENNESSEE."

U.T. is my school because I am an alumnus. I believe that everyone is entitled to have opinions. A betrayal would be something like bombing the Roman Room.

If you are going for 'most literal' award, I guess you have a point. However, may I suggest that would go over better on an authors forum.

I hope you do understand that when someone says "we gonna whip dey azz" etc., they don't really intend on touching someones butt. You are just being argumentative.

I heard the B1G Network only has 2 good announcers and that the rest of the shows and commentators were slow and overrated.

No man, the Roman Room is sacred. I'll personally whip dey ass, graduate or not, if they bombed the Roman Room, especially if George was in there.....and George was ALWAYS in there.

Younger folks will not have a clue what this is about. LOL!

But what are you comparing it to?

The SEC NETWORK is only showing us more games (which I like ) and some coverage of other sports we would probably not see otherwise. And 4 hrs of PF show.

We don't want to copy the BIG10 Network. (I mean the BIG10 cannot even count. Someone needs to tell the they have 14 in their conference. :pepper::pepper: ) I just think they have a better overall format for their network.
