Or they match the OS, keep him a year and then trade him where they can possibly get experienced players instead of draft picks.

They wont sign the heavily front loaded offer sheet with intentions of trading him down the road imo. They would be liable for the majority of the contract only to trade him? They will either take the picks or they will match with intention on keeping him in Nashville til the end

The ownership does not have the money to hold onto talent and accumulate enough of it to win the Stanley Cup. Fans want to see and back winners. Poile has done the best job of any GM in the league, but this just extinguished the fire with Nashville fans.

We'll see. A lot of people think if they can make it through the economy downturn and the Weber/Suter fiasco then they're here to stay. They had more sellouts this past year than in any year. Having a pretty good team will do that. Next year won't be the case without Suter/Weber.

I don't think they'll do that either, but some of the pundits have said that is a possibility since the draft picks aren't a sure thing and a trade with experienced players lets you know more of what you're getting. I think the main thing that would throw a monkey wrench in that is the lockout. The Preds would have to pay him the first year of the contract regardless if there is a lockout or not. That's crushing to a team like Nashville.

I've been asked to clean up this thread. Let's try to keep it from name calling and discuss the events. If weber stays, that's good for nashville but in my book, he's dirty.

The Preds matched. The front loaded contract is brutal, but the loss of Weber could have crippled this team for years. The right decision was made.

Bad news. How will they come up with the money and what will this do to team chemistry after Weber said he wanted to go to Philly?

Other good news. At least I don't have to sell all the Weber memorabilia I've accumulated from past Gnashvegas events to BearCat...

Nashville has committed a very significant part of their finances to one player............granted, he is one of the best defensemen in the game, I am actually surprised they matched the offer.

Agreed. I just wonder how they're going to come up with the money. Maybe they went home and shook up the seat cushions, but they either got some more investors or they got a loan.

It'll be interesting to see how long Weber truly stays here. 14 year contract? Unreal.

I don't agree with that. I think he signed it for two reasons.
1.) it's a ton of money and he might not have thought Nashville could afford that
2.) to force Nashvilles hand in offering the same contract. Which ultimately happened.

I'm surprised they matched too knowing where they stood financially.

It'll be interesting to see where they are in 5 years. Could keeping one player help them or hurt them in the long run? It'll definitely help with the fans and at the gate. Now they still have Rinne and Weber. Suter is good, but he isn't Weber. They'll be able to plug that hole more easily than trying to plug two huge holes.

Time will tell if it was the right thing to do in the long run.
