I still think they should've come to terms with him before it got to this point, but these are three good points. The last point would've sent a clear message.

As the organization analyzed the overall situation and worked toward a conclusion, the decision boiled down to three questions:

- Was Shea Weber the individual that this franchise wanted to lead our team, a team that would compete for the Stanley Cup every year, for the next 14 years?

- Would matching the offer sheet be in the best long-term interest of the team and organization?

- Would a decision not to match the offer sheet send a negative message to current Predators players and other NHL organizations, a message that the Predators would only go so far to protect its best players and be pushed around by teams with "deep pockets?"

The answer to each of the above questions is clearly “yes.” The organization spent the last several days analyzing all aspects of the offer sheet, from economic implications to the impact on the team hockey operations puts on the ice.

Few media people surprised Nashville opts to match Weber offer sheet...me incl, but, many NHL team execs didn't think the Preds could.

@DarrenDreger

Now that Nashville has matched, expect Titan Sports to ask for a no trade or modified no trade clause for Weber. Can't be traded for 1 year

A modified NTC would help Weber control the process if the Preds choose to trade him after the 1 year restriction.

@DarrenDreger

Fair to say Weber and those close to him are surprised Preds matched. You don't sign a sheet like that if you expect the team to match.

It was a catch 22 for the organization re-sign the best shut down defender (at his age) entering the prime of his career to a huge front loaded contract that will affect the organization financially for the next few years or let the person who you've built the organization around from a marketing standpoint the past couple of years to walk.

I think it was the right decision for them. Losing the one of the best defenseman pairs in the league during one off season would have done more damage financially from a marketing/ticket sales stand point than the Weber contract will.

I've been away from hockey sites for a bit, lockout talk?

Yes, there's a good chance this season won't exist.

I've linked this article before, but it's a good read on the market value of every NHL team as of 11/30/2011. It also talks about the salary cap (currently at 57% of revenue) and what it needs to be (more like 50%). A number of teams are in the red and it has to be redone.

Unless Doan wants nothing outside of an overpriced contract, I'll put the odds of that happening somewhere between 0-.03%
